Searching for a Jack Skellington Silver Coin

Halloween is always a fun time of year. There are some neighborhoods not far from here that tend to go all out on decorations for the holiday, some even having competitions for the best Halloween display. I will not be one of those people going all out, it's a very expensive hobby to get involved in and some people spend thousands of dollars for elaborate displays. I say good for them, but I don't have the budget or energy to put something like that together! lol

I have always been a fan of the movie "A Nightmare Before Christmas" and over the last several years there have been commemorative silver coins produced by the nation on Niue (and of course Disney gets a cut...) This year I was planning on trying to get into Halloween shopping for silver early this year, but promptly forgot until a couple days ago. One in particular that I think I may pick up this year is the Niue Jack Skellington coin. Of course main stream dealers have pretty much sold out, I should have started shopping sooner. Right now they are running about $129 on eBay. I did see the Perth Mint in Australia and a Canadian dealer who still had some in stock for about the same price, but importing precious metals can get expensive.

Have a look, it's a nicely designed rectangular coin:

About the coin:

From numista.com

I think coin has some serious potential to become a very valuable coin in just a few years time. It may only be once Troy ounce of silver, but the mintage is limited to 1,000. With such low numbers produced and the popularity of the film I'm fairly confident there is some profit to be made if you can manage to find a good price. I started way too late this time around, so eBay may be my only good bet. I may wait until after the holidays even to see if I can find a better price.

A large part my confidence of future gains comes from some past editions that Niue has produced. In 2021 they minted 3,000 of each of the following coins which promptly sold out and have become expensive items just three years later. First this Jack Skellington coin now is selling for over $200 pretty much anywhere you look:

ebay.com

Then the Sally coin is even harder to find, but ironically I did find one for sale for $159 on eBay, which is probably a really good deal. But it's not what I'm shopping for right now....

ebay.com

And last but not least is this heart shaped coin from the same year is going for more than $200, I've seen some sellers hoping to find a sucker and pricing them over $300!

apmex.com

So I do think with the low mintage this year's Jack Skellington coin may become a nice investment. But like I said I may wait until the holidays are over to try for a better price... Investing always required good timing, and a lot of the time some serious good luck!

The coin isn't the only Halloween item I'm looking at. Monarch Precious Metals produces Day of the Dead skulls every year, each is 2 ounces but I believe they also have a 10 ounce variety. This one is two ounces and is priced at $82 right now, really not too big a premium for these really cool silver skulls. Monarch makes a lot of great silvers skulls, they are definitely worth checking out if you are unfamiliar with them.

The problem with any holiday anymore is that there are more silver items out there that I want to buy than the budget will afford. That's what happens when you go from full time work to very limited part time... Oh well, such is life!

That will finish up the post of the day, I hope I you found some of it interesting. I have seen some other nice silver Halloween buys from silver gold stacker members so you may want to check them out! If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below. Thank you for all of your support everyone, it truly is greatly appreciated. Have a great week everyone!

I would imagine that coins with a pop culture (and Disney) tie-in are a lot riskier propositions than those more strictly anchored in being currency.

Don't really know a lot about it, but as a postcard collector, I know how things can come and go, depending on the moods and latest fashions of collectors.

Cool item, though!

Coins from Niue are starting to see some serious collectors, especially on the very low mintage items. Although it is technically currency these get treated more as collectible items, and the value is always much higher than the content of precious metals in them. Whenever dealing with something like this there is a risk, but I think this one will be winner due to rarity. I look at this as a play of a few years. In 50 years no one may even remember the movie nor care much about collectibles at that point! lol

Thanks for for your comments! it's always good to hear other's point of view, it's a great way to learn things...

Three years ago it retailed around $99, if I would have known at the time I would have bought a few to flip in a few years!

those halloween coins are outrageous. i didn't know they existed so i had to smile and i can see why they are popular. but i regard anything associated with Disney as high risk-

I'm sure Disney gets a cut, it seems to be their business model. In the 90's at one point they were threatening tattoo artists using their cartoon images with huge lawsuits. They area a greedy company. If you want to see interesting coins just look up all the coins the country of Niue produces each year!

I don't spend money for Halloween decorations as well. Even buying candy to hand out can be spendy. I live in a busy child neighborhood most years I give. Those are all some pretty cool looking coins but your right best to buy them after Halloween 😃

I see them as short term plays, hold a few years and when the prices go up sell them off. Never a bad thing to make a few bucks...

Candy for Halloween has gotten a lot more expensive. I noticed that the other day the store. If you have a lot of kids in the area you'll burn through a lot of candy that night!

Okay, I'll be honest, before I started reading I first took a walk through your entire publication because the image caught my attention, and I immediately called my oldest daughter to see them.

Now when I start reading I realize how people love this date and as you say they spend thousands of money in decorations, here in Venezuela we don't celebrate that, however for the girls that somehow we have always had the American influence, they always wanted to spend a Halloween night.

I think it's because of the candy.

but then when I read again that you are a fan of "A Nightmare Before Christmas" that movie, I made the comment to my daughter, that you are a fan, and she said, this words, you're one of us , HAHAHA, she loves that movie and she is also a fan.

I didn't know that there were commemorative coins, I hope that when the season is over, and you can buy the coin at a better price you can make a publication.

I hope so too! There are lots of interesting coins out there, even some made of plastic in one country....

Halloween is fun holiday, the candy the kids love for sure. In Mexico the Day of the Dead celebration is really cool too.

Yet another movie I have never seen. I love the sugar akull. My wife is very into that motif even though she has zero Latin heritage.

I surprised you never saw this one back in the 90's. One of those Tim Burton classics! Sugar is universal in Halloween though, I just have to not try and eat much myself!

Yeah, I am with you there. All the candy dishes sitting out around work are absolute temptation for me!

Very true! Disney+ now gives you access to all of Hulu and Disney so it's not a bad deal now. But there are so many streaming services and they are getting more expensive!

Yup, I could buy only soooo much and most are too much$. The IG Pouring community is getting a little overboard too.

It gets expensive fast if you buy just a few items, and the poured silver items are getting much more expensive!

Halloween isn't that big a deal here in Brazil, but a few kids here and there play trick-or-treat and some stores use the theme in an attempt to attract customers, even though it's not really part of our culture. Halloween silver coins are very interesting, really collectors' items!

The main thing is it's silver, precious metals will always have value! Plus collector's items often get high premium pricing which is always a nice thing! Halloween is more a US holiday and Day of the Dead Mexico, but Halloween is getting bigger around the world!

That's great, adding value to your item, I totally agree. I'd like Halloween here to be more like it is in the United States, I think it would be great fun for everyone, especially the kids
