[ENG/DEU] DJs, Music Lovers & Shazam: Awesome, but Not in a Way That It Is Known For (How to Find Similar Tracks?)

[ENGLISH:]

After being asked several times by customers and potential customers what I have in my music library, I want to make it available online. Since I can export my library as a .csv file, I'll tidy it up first. This means cleaning up the tags of the MP3 files and adding missing data. Since I sometimes don't have an artist for a particular track, I thought I'd just use Shazam...

(Shazam is a cell phone app that is supposed to be able to tell you which song is currently playing).

Instead of building up a long arc of suspense, I get straight to the point.

Honestly? For the most part, Shazam doesn't find the actual track* for me, but something “that sounds like”. This doesn't really help me find the missing information (I'll have to try other/similar apps...) but somehow makes something much better:

“Here, look. That sounds like...”

(*= This is certainly also because I mostly have remixes. But Shazam could just listen for longer. Which it sometimes does and comments with “That's difficult”, “I need something else” or whatever. But in the end... it can't find the title. Or I can ask it to listen 5 times within a title and get a different suggestion each time).

But similar sounding titles? That's not so bad! Because that way I can find tracks that complement my sets very well in terms of sound and

A) are therefore suitable for even “smoother” transitions or
B) already correspond very well to what I already have in my library.
C) In addition, you're pointed to songs and artists that you don't even know yet, but obviously should, because they correspond to what you've already added to your library.

With Shazam, you can then play the tracks briefly or be directed to other places where the tracks are available in full length. And when the track has played through, Shazam automatically plays the next tracks that also correspond to the search result in some way, are similar or would complement it well.

All in all, Shazam doesn't show me the vast majority of songs that I actually already have, but it does give me useful suggestions in the sense of “Hey, that sounds like.” So if you're looking for music that suits your taste, give Shazam a go. My results are more an expression of how poorly Shazam works in the intended sense - but perhaps this is precisely the added value.

Looking for unknown new tracks? Try Shazam! Listening to what the DJ is playing at the disco? ...

[DEUTSCH:]

Probiere Shazam! In der Disko gerade mal lauschen, was der DJ gerade spielt? ...

I have been using Shazam for years, especially when I hear good songs in public spaces. Mostly for curiosity and some for a replay later at home.

I can imagine that it works much better in the original sense when it's not EDM (, which can sound very similar, as you know, with just smaller differences. But I really thought the sound signature would be more unique...) On which styles of music you used Shazam mostly? And I assume it worked great like it should (in the original meaning/sense)?

Mostly old music, which kind of make me think that like oh.. I forget this one...

Some of them are remix one and yes... Sometime Shazam got confused with the beat and rhythms

Oh one more, there were a few cases that Shazam referred the song to the newer remix version, not the old original one

Yes, I know what you mean. Seems pretty much like one aspect of the situation I am facing.

You tried other apps with the same function "Tell me the song?" and can share a recommendation?

What I like with Shazam is that after recognizing a song and a musical group, it tells you where and when is the next concert of this group, you can even buy an entrance ticket, it's often on the other side of the planet for me, but it's cool 😀

This really sounds like a useful feature.

Thank you for your support & Hive a great day! (Quekery blocked me [and CCCEO accounts] to receive the hiqvote. But is the hiq not suspended in general since a few weeks? However, is it should be still active, you can save the hiqvote for another worthy person. But thank you anyways!)
