The Impact Of Uncensored Online Content On Children

We are in an era of technology and it keeps advancing day by day. I remember some years back while I was growing up, there was no free internet access nor did I have a mobile phone till I finished secondary school. Only a few people had access to mobile phones then and even those few don't have access to Internet they majorly use their mobile phones for phone calls. But as we can see things have changed in the past few years, everyone now has free access to the internet unlike before when you only have access to the internet only when you visit a cyber cafe.

Both the young and old now have access to personal internet service through the use of mobile phones. A lot of content is been published online which contributes to both positive and negative sides of human behaviour. Some content are not suitable for children which is why a parent must always be conscious.

Due to technological advancement, children now have access to mobile phones which is a form of distraction to them. You see children of nowadays always pressing their mobile phones instead of studying or reading their books. Some of them even bring those phones to school and use them to cause distraction in class while the teacher is teaching. That's why as a parent we need to guide them on the usage of mobile phones and also monitor the content they have access to online.

A few week ago, my neighbor's daughter who is just 8 years old came to my place and told me about the latest trending hip-hop song. I was amazed when she sang the song word for word without missing any line, To crown it up, she added that she could also dance the trending dancing step to the song, I thought it was a lie until she started dancing. I was quite shocked because I believed she was too young for that, this is the same girl that always perform woefully in her academics. When I asked her how she got to know all this, she said she learned it online and she has a mobile tablet. I could not believe it when she narrated all this. I was surprised when she brought out the tablet and showed me how she surfs online to search for the latest trending songs and dance steps.

We don't have the power to control the kind of content that is being published online but we have the power to control the kind of content our children have access to online. As parents, we can censor the content we want our children to have access to.

There are some mobile phones that come with kid mode, digital well-being, and control applications, with this application you can control and monitor the content and information your children have access to. This applications help to control time spent on phone and surfing internet, it also help in blocking access to some website that are not safe for kid. With this and parental monitoring, it will be of help in preventing the children from getting exposed to content that can endanger them.

Thanks for reading

Children may not have the autonomy to censor their own viewing choices, but with the guidance of their parents, they can effectively practice censorship. Thank you.
