Jagannath hall, the historical place of minority students
Jagannath hall, the residence of minority students of Dhaka University was established in the year of 1921 in the heart of the city Dhaka. It is currently inside the Dhaka university campus. Minority students from different religions like: Hindu, Buddhist, Christian and Ethnic group stay here as permanent residents of Dhaka university with great harmony.
This hall stands with a very large area. It has a big playground, residence with prayer and dining facilities. Currently approximately 2500 students stay here.
This is one of the oldest hall which have a long history. The founder of this hall was Kisorilal Roy Chowdhury. He was from the district of Tangail(one of the districts of Bangladesh). He has a good record of establishing number of schools and colleges. He was a Zamindar(land lord) of that area and also was a social worker.
Inside the hall there are many buildings where the students stay. Among the buildings one was named as Govinda Chandra Dev building. This is a nice building with architectural beauty. It is also told that the building was modelled like Oxford university. In the pictures you might have found some similarities with Oxford university. Here are the pictures of building from different angles.
As this is the place of minority students, you will find many statues of different religions like Hindu and Buddhist. The statues are quite large and made with aesthetic touch. I was quite excited to see a statue in the middle of a pond. This is the statue from Hindu religion. Sharing some of the statues pictures from there.
Inside the Jagannath hall it is very nice and full of natural beauty. I have found a flower garden with many nice flowers. This is spring season in Bangladesh. This is the season of blooming flowers. So, I found many blooming flowers. My daughter was very much excited to see those flowers and asked me to take her photo with the flowers. Here are the pictures.
There is a monument for the martyrs in 1971. There was a war which took place against Pakistan. In that war a lot of students and teachers were killed. To show respect to them, this monument was made.
As mentioned above, the Pakistani army suddenly attacked Dhaka City on 25th March, 1971. We call this as dark night. On that night thousands of armless common people were killed by Pakistani army. Many Students and teachers of Jagannath hall were also killed on that night. Professor Anuddoypoyon, Jotirmoy and Govinda Chandra were among them. They were very much popular and talented teachers. Their statues are placed inside the hall premises to show respect to them. Here are those pictures.
Last but not the least, Jagannath hall is a nice place to visit and to know about our history. So, you can visit this place if you have time. It’s easy to find the place. Firstly, you have to go to Dhaka university. It is in Shahabag area. Then you can ask any pedestrians, they will guide you to the place.
