Photographic visit to Monselice, province of Padua - Discovering Italy with alequandro!

Wow, a week has passed since my last post! A lot has happened these days and also because of the coronavirus epidemic, my routine has changed.
Finally I managed to process the shots of my last exploratory outing in Monselice, in the province of Padua.

Caspita, è passata una settimana dal mio ultimo post! Sono successe molte cose in questi giorni e anche a causa dell'epidemia di coronavirus, la mia routine è cambiata.
Finalmente sono riuscito riuscito a elaborare gli scatti della mia ultima uscita esplorativa a Monselice, nella provincia di Padova.

We arrived in the morning and parked the car on a street with little traffic.

Already a few meters from the car, a building attracted our attention...

Siamo arrivati la mattina e abbiamo parcheggiato l'auto in una strada poco trafficata.

Già a pochi metri dall'auto, un palazzo ha attirato la nostra attenzione...

The facade was very beautiful and had an equally interesting porch.

La facciata era molto bella e aveva un sottoportico altrettanto interessante.

Following the indications of the signs, we decided to take a climb and approach the highest part of Monselice, towards the castle.

Seguendo le indicazioni dei cartelli abbiamo deciso di imboccare una salita e avvicinarci alla parte più alta di Monselice, verso il castello.

Few people, it was a midweek day, now that I think about it, it was my birthday! :D

After 10 minutes of walking we reached the entrance of the castle.

Dopo 10 minuti di camminata siamo giunti all'entrata del castello.

The courtyard has an L-shape. Immediately to the left there is an effigy...

An effigy dedicated to the last owner of the castle, Count Vittorio Cini who restored it and lived there the last years of his life.

Through a railing I managed to photograph a hidden garden of the castle.

Attraverso un'inferriata sono riuscito a fotografare un giardino nascosto del castello.

Unfortunately the guided tours had just ended so we decided to return to visit the castle in the afternoon and in the meantime continue the visit of the city.

Purtroppo le visite guidate erano appena concluse quindi abbiamo deciso di tornare a visitare il castello nel pomeriggio e nel frattempo continuare la visita della città.

Unbeknownst to me, I discovered that there is a beautiful Renaissance villa nearby...

A mia insaputa ho scoperto che li vicino c'è una bellissima villa rinascimentale...

Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the scenographic staircase, adorned with statues, which connects the various floors of the garden terraces was carried out. The votive temple is the architectural backdrop to the staircase, with an arch in the center flanked by Tuscan columns and lateral niches.

Tra il Sei e Settecento si eseguì la scenografica scalinata, ornata da statue, che collega i vari piani dei terrazzamenti del giardino. A fare da fondale architettonico alla scalinata c’è il tempietto votivo, con un arco al centro affiancato da colonne tuscaniche e da nicchie laterali.

On the late eighteenth-century city wall there are dwarves, allegorical stone statues with clear allusion to the name of the Venetian patrician family who built Villa Nani Mocenigo.

Sul muro di cinta d’epoca tardo-settecentesca figurano dei nani, allegoriche statue in pietra con chiara allusione al nome della famiglia patrizia veneziana che edificò Villa Nani Mocenigo.

Two hundred meters beyond the villa, there is the church of Santa Giustina, built in 1256, after the demolition of the primitive parish church which stood on the top of the hill, in whose place the emperor Frederick II had his mighty keep built. The Romanesque church is flanked by a high crenellated bell tower and externally has Gothic decorative elements. The prothyrum preceding the entrance portal was added in the 15th century.

Duecento metri oltre la villa, c'è la chiesa di Santa Giustina, edificata nel 1256, dopo la demolizione della primitiva pieve che sorgeva sulla sommità del colle, al cui posto l'imperatore Federico II fece costruire il suo possente mastio. La chiesa in stile romanico è affiancata da un alto campanile merlato ed esternamente presenta elementi decorativi gotici. Il protiro che precede il portale d'ingresso è stato aggiunto nel XV secolo.

Upon entering the church there was only one lady who we discovered was a historical guide.
She was very kind and passionately described the history and characteristics of the church.
The interior has a single large nave, the quadrangular apse in the center (built on the remains of an ancient oratory dedicated to San Martino) and two side chapels. On the walls of the apse there are fourteenth-century frescoes, while on the main altar you can admire the Polyptych of Santa Giustina from the Venetian school of the fifteenth century.

Entrati nella chiesa c'era solo una signora che abbiamo scoperto fosse una guida storica.
E' stata gentilissima e ci ha descritto con passione la storia e le caratteristiche della chiesa.
L'interno presenta un'unica larga navata, l'abside quadrangolare al centro (costruita sui resti di un antico oratorio dedicato a San Martino) e due cappelle laterali. Sulle pareti dell'abside si trovano degli affreschi trecenteschi, mentre sull'altare maggiore si ammira il Polittico di Santa Giustina di scuola veneziana del XV secolo.

On the slopes of Colle della Rocca, past the church of S. Giustina, there is the most important religious monumental complex of Monselice. It is the Jubilee Sanctuary of the Seven Churches, consisting of six chapels that follow one another along the road that climbs up to the square in front of Villa Duodo, where the church of S. Giorgio is located.

Sulle pendici del Colle della Rocca, oltrepassata la chiesa di S. Giustina, si trova il più importante complesso monumentale religioso di Monselice. E' il Santuario Giubilare delle Sette Chiese, costituito da sei cappelle che si susseguono lungo la via che sale fino al piazzale antistante Villa Duodo, dove si trova la chiesa di S. Giorgio.

The seven votive churches are the result of the project of Pietro Duodo, a Venetian nobleman who had already built his residence in this place, with an adjoining private chapel. In 1605 he obtained permission from Pope Paul V to build and name small churches such as the seven major Roman basilicas, obtaining the same privilege as Plenary Indulgence.

Le sette chiese votive sono frutto del progetto di Pietro Duodo, nobile veneziano che aveva già edificato in questo luogo la propria residenza, con annessa cappella privata. Nel 1605 egli ottiene da Papa Paolo V il permesso di edificare ed intitolare le piccole chiese come le sette maggiori basiliche romane, ottenendo il medesimo privilegio dell'Indulgenza Plenaria.

Beyond the portal you can enjoy a beautiful view of the previously visited church of Santa Giustina.

A panoramic terrace invites us to observe the city from above.

That monumental door surmounted by the word "Romans Basilicis Pares", introduces the Roman road and represents the entrance to the Holy City in miniature, a complex built by the pupil of Andrea Palladio, the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi.

Quel portone monumentale sormontato dalla scritta “Romans Basilicis Pares”, introduce alla via romana e rappresenta l'ingresso alla Città Santa in miniatura, un complesso realizzato dall'allievo di Andrea Palladio, l'architetto Vincenzo Scamozzi.

In the churches there are six paintings by Palma il Giovane showing the Roman basilicas corresponding to the titles of each chapel.

Nelle chiesette si trovano sei tele di Palma il Giovane con raffigurate le basiliche romane corrispondenti alle titolazioni di ciascuna cappella.

In the seventh church, that of S. Giorgio, in 1651 the bodies of three martyrs and numerous relics are brought from Rome. The arrival of new conspicuous relics in 1713 led the Duodo family to add a real sanctuary alongside the church in which to keep the Holy Bodies.

Nella settima chiesa, quella di S. Giorgio, nel 1651 vengono portati da Roma i corpi di tre martiri e numerose reliquie. L'arrivo di nuove cospicue reliquie nel 1713 induce la famiglia Duodo ad aggiungere a fianco della chiesa un vero e proprio santuario in cui conservare i Corpi Santi.

And here is Villa Duodo. What is most striking is the location of the villa and its majesty.

Ed ecco Villa Duodo. Quello che colpisce di pià è la posizione della villa e la sua maestosità.

Initially it was made up only of the building to the south.
The second wing of the villa, more imposing and in an orthogonal position with respect to the late sixteenth century, was added in 1740.

Inizialmente era costituita solamente dall'edificio a sud.
La seconda ala della villa, più imponente e in posizione ortogonale rispetto a quella tardocinquecentesca, venne aggiunta nel 1740.

The square with the stone fountain in the center, is bordered on the side of the mountain by a staircase adorned with the statues of the Four Seasons, works of the Paduan sculptor Antonio Bonazza (1698-1763). The scenic staircase leads to the Esedra of S. Francesco Saverio, with the cave-niche named after the saint who stayed in the city of Monselice in 1537.

Il piazzale con al centro la fontana in pietra, è delimitato sul lato del monte da una scalinata adornata con le statue delle Quattro Stagioni, opere dello scultore padovano Antonio Bonazza (1698-1763). La scenografica scalinata porta all'Esedra di S. Francesco Saverio, con la grotta-nicchia intitolata al santo che nel 1537 ha soggiornato nella città di Monselice.

Currently the villa acts as a branch of the University of Padua.

Unfortunately it was lunchtime and the villa was closed although it gave the impression that it had been closed for some time.

I have not seen signs with visiting hours.

Non ho visto cartelli con orari di visita.

We were hungry so we decided to have lunch near the castle.
The visit with the guide was our next mission...well I give you an anticipation: a marvel!

La visita con la guida era la nostra prossima missione...beh vi do un'anticipazione: una meraviglia!
