Chinese Lantern Festival, North Carolina

(Edited)

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) I hope you will join me as we share markets from across the globe. Different and varied as the countries themselves, I always look forward to seeing what you send me. Come. Sit down. Relax. Enjoy the shortest trip around the world you ever experienced, perhaps taking in a market from somewhere you have never been, seeing something you may have never seen.💓💓

A a few nights ago, right before Christmas, the family, young and old alike went to a Chinese Lantern Festival right outside of Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, in a small community named Cary.

How can this not be your absolute favorite? A huge Chicken-Phoenix-Dragon, staring reflecting into the universe as it floated on the pond. The sheer size of it makes it an amazing sight. Every year, a new and different set of structures.

0P2A3107.JPG

They're not exactly sure when the Lantern Festival originated, but, it could be as far back as the Han Dynasty. It is said that Buddhist monks light the candles on the 15th day of the lunar year, all in the honor of Buddha. It was made popular in secular or non-religious circles and adopted throughout China, then later, the world. The winter festival is the first important feast after the Chinese New Year. The most important thing going on during this event is to watch the Chinese lanterns. Who knew?

text15.png

Welcome! Embrace the tunnel. Upon your entry, you walk through a tunnel of lights at the Chinese Lantern Festival. I have to admit, it feels a little bit magical. The colors are brilliant and the lanterns are spectacular. Every year, they put up the display and every year, they take it down. They start building next years almost right away. They never have the same one twice. They are built from scratch every year.

Who doesn't love to see what they will be selling in some foreign market, shopping in places I have never been to and some, never even heard of. I am always curious about foreign ingredients, different products that are being sold. So, yes! I would love to see you! We all do!! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery, art galleries, or even a Christmas Market, wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. Make them available here, so we have them in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you so much!! ❤

0P2A3128.JPG

Miao Zhang works his way through the entire park of silk before the gates open at 6, making sure each piece works the way it should. The effect of the relatively brief cultural education that adults and children walk away with after a tour through the lanterns is well worth the five months it takes Miao and his team to put the festival together. In July, Tianyu Arts & Culture, the company that designs and builds the lanterns, start sketching out ideas at its home base in Zigong. Every year since the first Cary event in 2015, Tianyu has created new displays for the show, which always includes a 21-foot-tall dragon. Once the show is designed and approved, about 18 artisans and six performers arrive in October — along with the lanterns — to assemble the displays. The performers stay behind to dazzle audiences two or three times a night with a 30-minute show filled with acrobatic feats. Miao remains, too, to make sure the lanterns are in working order and to serve as the group’s translator. source

0P2A3167.JPG

The lanterns are made up of vibrantly colored fabric that is stretched over iron frames. The frames are illuminated by dozens of LED lights and if you look, they are strategically placed around the area for maximum visual impact. I thought I would be blase about the entire thing, but, I was like a little kid. It was pretty cool. There are thousands of lights, about 8,000 of them, giving each of these lanterns a most magical existence.

image.png

There were quite a few Alice in Wonderland type of characters. One of the men building these sets says that he likes doing it to promote Chinese culture. Each display has a sign that explains the Chinese history behind the individual lantern.

0P2A3120.JPG

The penguins on ice. Their characters run from realistic to whimsical. It was fun to just meander through the park, watching and being watched. It usually is a great time to people watch, but, tonight it was all about the lanterns.

Will you marry me, it says. Oh, there were men and women alike standing there pleading for a hand in marriage. We will have to wait until next year to see if there are any takers. Love me, love me, love me do. Oh, the Beatles had it right.

I dedicate this post to all of you. You bring joy to my soul and spread your love across the world. For this, I thank you. And just like that, these musings are done...and just so you know, although we are throwing glitter around the globe, I can guarantee you that there is still a little left to take us through Christmas. Have a most fabulous day!

Thank you for visiting my post 💖 Because of you, I come back to post, again and again, I am encouraged by you, for the time you take to visit, comment or even upvote. For all of these reasons, I am eternally grateful. Don't ever forget what a wonderful world we live in, people. Some days, it is not as easy to see, how wonderful it really is. Kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do.

We Are The World

There comes a time
When we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
Oh, and it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all

We can't go on
Pretending day-by-day
That someone, somewhere soon make a change
We're all a part of God's great big family
And the truth, you know, love is all we need
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives

It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me
Oh, send them your heart
So they know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand

We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving
Oh, there's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me

When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, well let us realize
Oh, that a change can only come
When we stand together as one, yeah, yeah, yeah

We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me

It is always such a delightful Festival and it has been going on for a few years, keeping the same venue. I guess it really works well for them and so they have not looked for another place to do it. I am amazed that they start building it in October from the ground up, new and different every year. It's always amazing to see what they come up with and I have no idea how long it takes them to build that dragon, but it's always over the water and so I am sure that is a special challenge for them. And yet come every year they succeed pulling it off. I want to wish you a happy and healthy New Year as you head off into another life. I am so excited for you and even though it'll be different and take some adjusting, I I'm pretty sure that you will be able to grasp it and all of its freedom. Thank you so much for being such a supportive friend and participating in the challenge every week.

Thank you so much! I really do love going there and they change it up, building from the ground up every year. I was amazed that they redo the Dragon because it's so big and because it's in the water. I guess technically it's about the water because it does not actually touch the water but they have to get it out there. Which has to count for something.

I think it's been around for five or six years now and the thing that fits in perfectly so they don't move to another location season-to-season. It draws a big crowd and it's no wonder because when you see it it's jaw-dropping beautiful. I loved some of the attractive things that they have there and I intend to keep on going back because it's just that cool. They have another one that I like up in Philadelphia but this one is actually bigger and dare I say better? Because the school is there really a better?

Thanks for stopping be and saying hello , leaving your kind words behind! Mwah!

Hey my friend are you well? That is proper pretty hey, I can imagine back in the day those 'led lights' were candles, KABOOM eh... loving that, so cool especially for this time of year a sight to behold I am sure. We have a street in South Africa an afluent area called Waterkloof, every year all the houses try and outdo each other to see who can spend the most on lights, and they do. The lives of the rich and famous eh. I should try pop in there and take some pics, infact that is just what I will do.

Oh decided to do a #marketfriday post

Hello, my friend! I hope you had a Merry Merry Christmas and yes that is a pretty proper hey to me! I can't imagine the days before LED on these although that is a little bit of a lie because I do remember them in your city and I do believe that the lights were a little bit prettier in some ways because you could not see where the lights were because the glow was much warmer. I'm not a huge fan of LED lights but I can say that they might be a tad bit safer than candles. My neighborhood does the same thing with the lights, we're sort of but it's not the Rich and Famous here it's being American. Electricity is not that expensive here so it affords everybody to put up a million lights. I am so excited to see that you didn't work your Friday and I want to thank you for doing it and for dropping the link here. Just so you might think I'm a snob I'm going to show you my lights. LOL I can do this because you know better.

Isn't it just amazing? I have loved the Chinese New Year's festivals my entire life! There is always a dragon involved somehow and that just spells amazing awesomeness to me. I used to love the ones in New York City when I was growing up. I haven't been to one of those in years. You shouldn't feel bad turning up now and then. We are all in the same boat and can't be everywhere at once and most of us have a life. I have finally stopped apologizing we're not being everywhere. It is just impossible.

So I want to thank you for stopping by and say hello and leaving a lovely message and dropping your link. I hope you had a very Merry Christmas and that you enjoy New Year's as well. Thank you so much for being such a Beautiful Soul.

Yes, amazing! I guess when we grow up with these traditions right in front of our eyes, we take it for granted... :) And we tend to admire and appreciate traditions from further shores more. True, we can't be everywhere at once, something I still learn to accept at times... Thank you, Denise.

I know! Isn't it amazing? Every year, and I use that term loosely as I have only been to this one twice, I say the same thing. There are so many of them and it's like a little maze as you weave in and out and go around. I cannot imagine having that much patience to build and put these together. For God's sakes I failed Lego school. What does that tell you about me? Thank you for stopping by and saying hello and leaving good words behind.

I wish you and yours a happy and healthy New Year!

Oh I love these! I am so going to go when I am down there. Honestly I really like that better than the lights at the racetrack here. At least you can walk and film at your leisure! Not blinding brake lights or people crowding up on you. Way more my speed. Thanks for showing it off! I have it on my bucket list!!!

These really are better than the light shows that you have to drive through. They're really pretty in person but if you are trying to get any pictures of them it usually is a pretty good fail, unless you're sitting on top of the car. LOL

Well when you do move down it's got a very generous timeline on it so I'm sure you'll be able to make one of those dates. It's a little bit of a drive but it is totally worth it. And it's only a little bit of a drive if you are doing it all in one day. It's an easy drive otherwise. It's nice to be able to stroll through and take pictures at your leisure. It's a great thing to have on a bucket list. Thank you for being such a supportive friend!

Oh! Thank you very much for your tip again! Your weekly tag has given many people a definite and practical goal to get engaged with their surroundings!

This process has given me an urge to do more research on things I have usually taken for granted! So, your endeavor has done a lot of good for people in many different ways!

Hope you have recovered from unwrapping all your presents! You might need hand massage!!

Cheers.

I am so happy to hear that it had ulterior helpfulness about it! We do engage in our surroundings and the local people as we get around our cities, don't we?

Thank you for pointing that out.

Also, I have a very large family and they all get a little something for their sister as they are visiting our house for Christmas!:) And one of them bought a massage for me!Haha! You are THAT good!

Oh! That’s funny! I sort of know I am psychic, but I don’t know it would be rather sharp during weekends.

I hope you’ll enjoy your massage a lot.
It’s so nice to have a big and warm family!

Oh, what a splendid display of beauty. I just adore all the colors and variety of styles they use. I am sure it must have been awesome to see in person.

It really was and as usual, they made it a wonderful maze of colors. You could weave in and out or follow a path. I have to admit that it is the second year in a row that I have seen it and I must admit that it was even better than last !

Thank you for stopping by and saying hello, leaving your kind words behind. I wish you and yours a most wonderful New Year ahead!

I’d love to see something like this. Wonderful. I have a ‘Thing’ for dragons too. Your photography is excellent my dear, thank you for entertaining my eyes 👀 and here is my post for this week - https://steemit.com/marketfriday/@starjewel/market-friday-food-bazaar

Thank you so much! You always leave such a bright and cherry comment! I love their dragons! They always build such amazing structures.

I am so happy that you like it. It really is a fun place to go. I gave the address in case anyone is near there. It is four hours away for me, but, I had a kid who was in college down there, so it wasn't too bad! :)

Thank you so much for dropping the link!
