Happy 3rd Birthday to Hive!

I'd noticed a few posts in my feed mentioning that it's around the three year mark since the creation of Hive.

I still remember well the bemusement of seeing those various false witnesses in the Top 20 following the hostile take over of the chain engineered by Ned and Justin Sun, and then the horror of the reality that they'd colluded to centralise the old chain, which shall not be named in pursuit of their own self interest.

And then the eventual birth of Hive with a Fork of the chain that shall not be named and the evil entities' stake frozen out.

Justice, at least partially.

Three years of development on Hive....

Given that everything which had already been developed on the previous chain that shall not be named had to be jigged to work with Hive I think we're in a pretty good position after just three years, with many of the old functionalities and dapps having evolved and some new ones being developed too.

And two (I think it's two, it may be three?) major Hard Forks have helped to move things forwards too.

Splinterlands obviously stands out as the major success story of Hive, and the LAND whitepaper is finally out!

But to my mind Hive remains principally as a blogging platform and I'm glad to see that both PeakD, LeoFinance and Ecency have continued with development and are better now than three years ago.

Resource Credits being added in the last Hard Fork have also helped with functionality, meaning that we can now Vote to reward posts and POWER dapps separately. I guess the next evolution is an RC market, which would add another way to earn.

HBDs have also been a major stepping stone, one of the few truly decentralised algorithmic stable coins and offering a 20% interest rate. I think this is doing a lot to attract inward investment (or at least stop the selling of Hive, but only because we are a relatively small chain in terms of Market Cap and so HBD has very low liquidity - it's hard to buy!

Hive-Engine continues to provide an easy way for projects to develop their second layer tokens, and it's nice to have more options to access this: not only TribalDex, but also LeoDex and BeeSwap, and I've enjoyed taking part in some of the pools.

And we've just seen the end of the 3Speak LARYNX airdrop, and possibly soon we'll see encoder nodes go into full functionality and the birth of a truly decentralised video hosting network paired with Hive, although it may well be years in the making, this is a huge undertaking, after all!

According to Hive.io there are now 126 projects built on Hive.

Oh, and good riddance DTube - very nice to see that account Powering Down which will hopefully continue and mean less reward for the famers who post to it.

Final thoughts

If anything Hive is now stronger than the chain it forked from, reborn out of a centralised attack.

They may have made their money out of their immoral deed, but at least Ned's and Sun's reputations are now in tatters, recorded in history on the Hive chain for as long as said chain continues, and it's nice to know that they won't be doing business with anyone who is genuinely interested in freedom and speech and decentralisation going forwards.

And Hive is moving forwards, slowly but surely Dapps continue to be build and the last three months of relatively a relatively stable Hive price with the odd spike suggest there's confidence in the chain....
