The Lifesaving Gift: Why Blood Donations Matter

avatar

Blood is the lifeblood of our bodies as that can't be denied. It carries oxygen and nutrients to our tissues, removes waste products, and helps to fight infection. When someone loses blood due to an accident, surgery, or medical condition, they need blood transfusions to survive. A lot of life's have been saved due to blood donations and also a lot of life's have been lost due to wrong blood donations.

Blood donations are essential to ensure that there is a sufficient supply of blood available for those who need it. In the United States, for example, blood banks need about 25,000 donations every day to meet the demand.

Do you actually know that the process of donating blood is safe and simple. Most of us as I was once in that shoe, I always think blood donations is like a surgery taking olace. Well we thank God for knowledge. It typically takes about 10 minutes as far as you follow the necessary procedure and they involves the following steps:

  • Registration: Donors provide their identification and answer a few health-related questions to ensure they are eligible to donate.

  • Screening: A healthcare professional checks the donor's vital signs and conducts a brief interview to assess their health status.

  • Hemoglobin test: A small sample of blood is taken to measure the donor's hemoglobin level, ensuring they have enough iron in their blood to safely donate.
  • Donation: The actual blood donation is relatively quick and painless. A needle is inserted into a vein, and a bag collects the blood. Donors typically give about a pint (approximately 500 ml) of blood.
  • Rest and refreshments: After the donation, donors are encouraged to rest for a short time and enjoy refreshments to replenish their energy.

I donate platelets, it is a bit different process to donating blood as it takes a quick blood sample from the backside of my hand and a check in temperature and blood pressure. Afterwards I get taken to a room full of very comfortable chairs, pillows and blankets which are needed to accommodate the donators as they will be there for at least an hour to an hour and a half during the extraction of platelets from the blood through a centrifuge. afterwards is one of the best parts as they ask you when you would like to donate again and give you chocolate milk and an alfajor (like two cookies with dulce de leche in between).
Regardless of anything anyone says I do it for myself and for the people that need it.
