Why Ladies Market? A Place For Bargained Branded Items

April 15, 2023
When I first heard of Ladies Market, I assumed that everything sold there was only for ladies. Because if it wasn't, why would they name it that? It makes no sense. Up until now, I couldn't find any information to answer the question, Why was it named Ladies Market?
But if you're curious, let me take you to the Ladies Market. Before going to this market, I went to the TOP Mall (This Is Our Place) to find a place to eat. I stumbled upon a food court with multiple food stalls serving various Asian cuisines. The food court is quite spacious, and because it was the weekend, the majority of consumers were Filipinos and Indonesians.

In the end, I chose to order lunch at Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. I thought the food is satisfying. Unfortunately, I just regretted ordering there. Aside from being costly, the food didn't taste good and it was only a small serving. The tea was even bigger than the main course. So it was the tea (which was served in a Coca-Cola cup) that made me full, lol.
After eating my lunch, I went directly to the market as I was looking for something that I'll be using in packing my stuff before moving to a new place. On my way, I came across Ladies Mall. So it isn't just the Ladies' Market that exists in Mongkok, but also the Ladies' Mall. I didn't explore it though as I looked for the street market.
Some Indonesians were selling Indo food outside the MTR Station. I tasted Indo foods before and they seem to like spicy flavors. So their foods are not really my type.
I found the Ladies' Market at Tung Choi Street in Mongkok, Hong Kong. Although I've been there once before, it was 5 years ago so I kind of forgot the direction. Stretching along the street are over hundreds of stalls selling a wide variety of bargained items.

This is one of the popular street markets in Hong Kong. By the look of it, you could compare it to any other typical street market selling a wide variety of merchandise and household items. Yet, the main reason why people love shopping in this market is, it has inexpensive branded and fashioned items, as well as fashioned accessories, souvenirs, good quality luggage, gadgets, and other unique items.
For those looking for branded, yet cheap knock-offs, (well, they obviously are), this is definitely the best place to visit. But even though they are knockoffs, I can say that many items have good quality. There are branded clothes, shoes, bags, wallets, accessories, and other items.
Aside from those, there are also stores selling Hong Kong souvenir shirts and other items.
For those who love cosplaying, there are sold costumes here as well. The displays in this store are Disney characters' costumes. Of course, there are Chinese costumes too.
I spotted some unique gift items and home decors. There are Chinese ceramic kitchen items, teapots, and tableware sets.

If you are a foreign worker or tourist, you might want to get some Chinese home decors too as souvenirs.

Cute slippers for your young ones. There are bags of these styles as well perfect as gift items to kids.
There are also items for anime lovers. One Piece and Naruto characters are among those on display.
Among all items in the market, here are my favorites. As a person who loves art, I am always into unique and artistic items.
Unique native-fashioned bags for ladies.
Art lovers would love these paintings of some notable landmarks in Hong Kong and China. The prices are reasonable for me because it needs effort and time to create a beautiful masterpiece. One of my plans is to buy a painting before I go back to my country. These are definitely lovely when displayed in my room or our living room.

Trams and quaint streets of Hong Kong
If you are unaware, the pricing of items in this market is not fixed. I discovered that when I inquired about the prices of items sold by different vendors. It was truly amusing recalling their reactions.
The original price of this Daughnut bag, for instance, is HK$200. Because my reaction was uncertain, the lady decreased the price to HK$180. I have no plan of purchasing it, I was simply curious as to how low the bargain prices will be, lol. When I was about to leave, the vendor unexpectedly offered a lesser price of HK$150. Imagine the 25% discount. If you insist on bargaining further, there may be a lower price.
It wasn't the first store that offers bargain prices. It was funny when they are lowering the prices more as you attempt to go. They probably think that they would lose the customer if they won't do so. So those thrifty customers could bargain more if they want to. But be pitiful for the vendors as well. Not every day is a lucky day for them.
After roaming around the Ladies' Market, it is perfect to visit one of the food stores along the market. There are different restaurants, dessert shops, and street food shops.

You can also stop over at this arcade, play, and win some cute stuffed toys.
What did I get at the end of the day? This vacuum bag set. This helped me pack my clothes, especially winter clothes.
So that's all for today's #MarketFriday. Greetings to @dswigle and the community members.

So many cute and artistic items! I would love shopping there 🤣. HK is in my list to visit for a long time already. I heard many good things about it. I also found the cheapest flight for $96 to HK which could be an option for me too hehe. I'll just have to research it a bit more before going and check out some of the places you've written.
You should.. There are cheap hotels here where you can stay. I recommend you to visit Macau too once you visit HK. It's just HK65 to get there via bus from HK.. only need passport and ID 😊.. It's a pretty place too..
Is it because most of the sellers perhaps are ladies? Just a mere guess. hehe
Haha.. I dunno either.. Well, in many shoos, majority of the sellers are ladies 🤣 !LADY

Interesting thing with the Market Ladies that is not necessarily just for ladies, lol. Just as you thought, I was also thinking that is some kind of shopping heaven just for ladies but I've seen plenty of things that I'm sure men would love too. It's also good to know that there is not a fixed price. If you are good at bargain, then no doubt you will end up buying lots of things with the same amount of money that some might only afford 1-2 items from the shop
True.. And if you know that the price is too high, you really need to bargain hehe !LADY

The asian decoration that you show at the beginning brings me a lot of memories of my childhood because my father used to travel a lot to China and he always brought a lot of decorative things, they are very beautiful things.
I like those paintings of HK and China landmarks 😊

There are a lot like this in HK. But items here are much more prettier. Some are branded hehe
See the name of that market I also thought that it was such kind of market where only ladies items allowed to sell. I also love to visit market sometimes but not regular. I hope you enjoyed there.

A ladies' market! How cool is that? The streets are full and so busy, what a wonderful place to wander, isn't it? Is that the street where you bought your big suitcase a few weeks ago?
The market is amazing and they carry everything possible. You are right. That market has been legendary all of my life and even famous for its knock offs. The bargaining is given and you can get some really good deals.
Always good to know your prices! Awesome place to shop!
#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world. Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

What a colourful and busy market. It looks like a fun place to spend a morning. You got some wonderful photos. We don't have a ladies market here that I'm aware of, quite a novel idea.
But for sure, you have a unique market there that you can share 😊 !LADY
