Muting The Bots

Hi fellow Ranters,

Today I wanted to let loose a little bit about these damn comment bots!

Muting The Bots

There are a few things that I've been finding really annoying about some of the things going on with Hive lately. One of them is definitely the bots with people calling the commands all the time! Lol

ft1 edit.jpg

Bots have always been a thing on the Hive blockchain. For a while there were bid-bots, but unless you've been around Hive since before it became Hive, you likely don't remember those. They were services where people could pay a value and you would get an upvote based on how much you sent to them. It was quite a service and there are some people still here on the chain that made a lot of money off that type of stuff, both as a user as well as a provider.

I digress a little bit on that end but I wanted to iterate the point that Bots have always been a part of the Hive blockchain, because well they have their uses. With the advent of 2nd layers like Hive Engine and hopefully expanding more in the realm of DLUX we have the addition of a vast number of tokens if we think about it. One of the turns that this number of tokens has taken recently though, and I find it a little bit annoying in some ways but nice in others, is that people have configured a bot to provide said token to someone as a way to manually distribute the token.

IMG_1072.jpeg

I think this is overall really good and a nice thing to do for people, as you can directly support someone in so many ways lately. Pizza tokens, PGM, LOL and so many others are all tokens that people distribute to others via comments and commands to the bot services.

What really has started to annoy me though is when I see a post and I'm thinking "whoa this one must be pretty good! It's got 20 comments, that's awesome!" and then I get into the post, read it and get to the bottom to leave a little bit of feedback and see what the conversation is at the end of the post and what I end up finding is a bunch of horse shit bot commands and replies! Sometimes I see people call three or four bots at once per comment! What the fuck man?! Lol

IMG_0934.jpeg

The bot command stuff has really gotten out of hand I think! I don't want to sound like an old timer or anything.. but I remember when comments were comments and if you saw many comments on a post they were legit back and forth from the people in the post instead of this incessant volume of spam bullshit.

With that being said, I've gone through and started muting the damn bots! Lol. The bot I haven't muted on purpose right now is Hive Buzz because I like that one, shoot me for my bias I know. The other ones though, even though they give tokens and might have some type of utility, ya those are all getting muted. I'm going to keep an eye on the posts in the community and make sure I cover all the damn bases on those things! Lol. It's nothing against the people who run the bot or the people who use it to generate some type of reward for the person that they are commenting or having a conversation with in the comments but damn is it annoying. I love to see some good engagement on posts but seeing 10 or more comments and all of them coming from the various bots that people are summoning really annoys me.

Cleaning house is all I can say! Lol

Man I am one of those who use the bot frequently.
I tend to use not more than two command bots each time. But yeah you have some valid point because somehow the real engagement is lost somewhere in the middle of the bots auto comments.

But how does mute affect the number of comments received in one's post? does it reduce to only show non-bot comments?
! LOLZ

Let’s find out! Lol. I see you used it but I haven’t seen the comment yet from it. I wonder if it doesn’t arrive? Hard to say, this is my first time muting a bot!

I know the bots are fun for some people and a way to give to others but I think they are annoying myself hahaha. I don’t mind if someone uses it on me but I never use them myself.

I HATE bot comments! A long trail of curse words goes through my mind every time I get one...and then! I think ...

yes I also understand your point. heheh
sometimes seeing that many comment from the bot can be overwhelming, drowning the actual engagement.

I wish I have more HP, so that my small vote is worth something. but so far I could only offer the token as appreciation to those who come and comment on my post or the author I support.

so far I think @pizzabot bot has done a nice thing, as they will edit the comment any time more than one person uses the command on the same post.

😅 yeah, I get that. That is why I make sure to bring my blood pressure back down when I get a bot comment.

I have no idea how the various bots/tokens work. However, I notice that they have gained popularity and I wasn't sure if some authors just saw the need to follow a trend. I understand that there's no ill intent:)

I wish I could remember well which of my friends do not like them and which are up to... have a pizza or beer as an extra reward, sign of appreciation etc. I never had serious problems with having bots comments in the posts -- untill there are real comments. Ofc, if the only thing some folks can say is '!XXX !YYY !ZZZ' -- then its a sad thing and a bit annoying, indeed... but thats the thing about the folks, not about the bots...right?

Actually, I feel much much more disenchanted when I deal with another sort of comments, that are 'faking' the real human communication -- just like: 'Impressed with your brilliant clicks' -- being produced at a dubious rate of 5-10 comments per minute ... while reading or watching of a single post require at least decent 2-3-5 minutes...

Thats a RaNT & Complain community, right? Exactly for ranting 🤓 @cmplxty

But how does mute affect the number of comments received in one's post? does it reduce to only show non-bot comments?

@ekavieka, thats a good point. I guess no! all the statistics is still there. it's just that such a measure spares the human eye a little when one is going thru comment section, removing the visibility of "garbage comments", and nothing more. lol

I always enjoyed getting pizza and beer tokens from you; They made me smile because I knew that it was a real appreciation for a post. However, lately, all kinds of tokens/bot comments pop up, and some authors don't even bother to leave meaningful comments. It just looks like a shortcut and insincere action:)

'It just looks like a shortcut and insincere action' - totally agree. On this hand, on another hand... I love the pic complexity have posted there (about the devs and the user experience). The bots and the tokens itself are not evil, maybe even the implementation is not evil (idk), but lazy users cheating on their human activity, are... so... should I share more pizza with you, sometimes... in another community? I'd love to, you know. 😘

Yes, you can share your pizza with me, anytime.😘

I do not see you as someone to unintelligibly drop a token just for the sake of doing so.

As far as I know, muting can only hide the comment from the bot, but sometimes you can see the name of the bot on the comment section I guess.
Unless it is downvoted, then it will be hidden as far as the author of the comment.

Hahaha, I was deliberately putting a space between the exclamation mark and the command.
I don't want to call the bot after knowing you are annoyed by it. : )
But it will be interesting to see how it will turn out on your side as you are the one muting the account.

Ah I was wondering why it didn’t fire. Makes sense! Lol. If you call them I won’t get mad about it, you can do what you’d like with them. I wonder if I can convince the bot owners to change their strategy a little bit. I might write another follow up post on that haha

I think I've read from someone else just recently also talking about the same issue. Oh I remember now, it was a tweet by acid a few days ago.

The botty comments have really become a nuisance. I think if it's possible to just quietly tip people tokens with the commands without the need to spam their comments, that would be a great improvement. It's possible to implement, so I really don't get why it hasn't been done yet.

Personally, I don't think I've ever used those commands before, mostly because I don't even remember them, but also because I don't want to spam comments with a tip. I get that no one has the intention of spamming comments, so it's really up to the bots and the tipping services to do something about this. But I guess the tippers could also use fewer commands per comment? That could be a great way to reduce spam from their end.

Yeah I’ve got some thoughts on what the bot owners should do, thought they won’t listen to a small fry like me I can still try though.

I’ve never used them either and just send the tokens to someone else or to NULL and burn them.

Hey! @cmlxty I agreed with you that such kind of content is disgusting. But I personally observe few person owning more than 1 accounts on the platform and criticizing others.
I joined Hive last year and publish 60 articles there without rewards and curation while I tried to engage here as much possible for me. Yet I am not acceptable on the servers of the platform as verified member while people with multiple accounts are enjoying everything there. That's the disappointment I got from Hive Eco-system.

Well the challenge with hive and content is you have to spend time outside of posts and leave comments like this here to gain an audience. It also varies on what content you are putting out but trust me, content discovery here on hive takes time! I started on here with 0 Hive Power and I made it to where I’m at today through dedication and a bit of luck but most importantly through comments with others!

I agree the multiple account piece is annoying but don’t compare yourself to others and rewards. Rewards here are very random. Some days they are great and other days they are terrible. The big thing is to spend time here, talk with people on their posts and have fun. The other parts will come with time!

Hahah I know! It’s a challenge! I feel the same way and it’s hard because they are doing what they think is a nice thing but it’s more annoying than nice as it’s just shit tokens lol but it’s what they can do so I don’t say anything.

On the lookout for the bots, sorry that I have to leave you as admin here. I lost the keys to the community account so I can’t bump you down to mod or regular member hahaha fail. I have one of my other community account keys but I mistakenly didn’t save this one. I can easily keep up with the muting but feel free to mute any you see that I forgot!

I totally get you, it feels spammy. Something I also experience with a GIF overkill. Must be our age too ;<)

I am kind of proud to say that most comments on my posts are genuine ones, with plenty of words.

P.S. The aforementioned is probably also the reason why I pretty much stopped using throwing the PIZZA token around, eventhough I enjoyed it for a couple of days.

Haha nice that’s always good to get legit comments! I go up and down with them, some days I get a lot other days I get one or two but it’s nice to get human interaction instead of one comment with five bot commands!

I can proudly say that I’ve never summoned one of these damn things! Lol

I meant to stop by recently but my colleague is over in Lisbon Portugal for a little bit. I said I had a friend in the country but wasn’t sure if they were near Lisbon or not.

I don't like those bots as well. I wonder why not a solution is created that doesn't require the per comment calling out for those bots. HIVE being a social chain at its core should get some general feature out so it can handle voting with other tokens, but still through one of the standard HIVE UIs instead of one of those tribe UIs nobody is using anyways. I feel we are already paused for a long time regarding social network features while the UI and UX isn't really improving, and we aren't yet where we should be regarding UX for the masses. Owwww this comment is more a Rant than I expected it to be {LOL}

0

Haha rant away my friend!

Yeah it’s interesting how the UI’s have been a little lacking lately for advancements. Peakd is pretty good but that’s about it. I would much rather a bot command being silent than anything, I wonder if we can get there eventually!

0

I wonder as well. Have the feeling most teams are not doing a lot, or spending time on features instead of UX within the dApp and across the HIVE chain.
For instance, someone told me Leo Threads UX was on par. I'm afraid I have to disagree. When I open Twitter, Instagram or any other well-known social app, the UX is so much better. That same person said: UX is good, Speed is good. While UX is so much more, UX can be destroyed when some button isn't available on the right screen, when a button is at the wrong side of the screen, or when a button is just a tat too far away. All our frontends suffer from the same, and I feel talking into a black hole when mentioning these types of things. Anyways, let's be positive (edje, be positive!) Therefore I join you in hoping it all will be recognised by the devs and addressed appropriately. You see, I even set the door wide open regarding the solutions and how the respective devs can handle all this. They could even say: Edje, you are totally wrong, we don't change anything since the UX we experience in our dApps is perfect, it can't become better. Case closed. Handled appropriately 😆😆😆

In the theme for what you’re saying, I of course have the perfect meme for it.

DE0E983C-8A0B-407A-B0C0-D96954BBA2F3.jpeg

It may look cool to a dev but to a user it’s shit lol. I know we are a ways off on some of these things but progress is one step forward and I think we’ve made good progress. We can’t compete with the giant platforms yet but we are getting there!

0

😆😆😆 Perfect Meme indeed.
We are making progress, but, I feel, none of our dApp teams has a solid professional approach towards their dApps. All seem to be amateur, or somewhere between amateur and professional approaches. But ok, I shall stop and leave things to the dApp teams themselves how they want to go about their own creations 😉 That Meme... still 😂😂😂

and what I end up finding is a bunch of horse shit bot commands and replies!

I actually thought I was the only person on here that found this sickening. I've seen it on lots of posts and I wonder how the fuck it makes sense. Not that there's token mentioned by the bot are even worth any value, some cheap valueless shit coins. Thanks for mentioning it, I hope the people who make the commands get to read this and take corrections cause that shit is annoying for real.

Ya I agree! I burn my tokens that I get, they aren’t worth anything at this point so I send them to null and remove them from circulation. I haven’t done it in a bit, I’ll have to do that today! Lol

You should but the owners would be sad don't you think?

0

Well burning tokens helps the token price because it reduces the circulation of it even if it’s just a few dozen tokens. That’s a few dozen more that will never be bought or sold. It’s a good way to keep the price of something at a reasonable level to control the scarcity.

no. you are not the only one. so what is the solution? yea, we can mute the bots comments in our posts... (but they still will be there). do you think the folks than will immediately work out their mistakes, overestimate wrong behavior, stop valuing their time and really begin to inspect other people's posts (and really spend their precious lifetime on it), start write meaningful comments? man, you live in a fantasy land then... I assume that this will not happen. but some posts (that no one goes to read and comment) will make their authors feel even lonelier, without all those little signs of appreciacion ... something like this. ofc I might be wrong, just shared my 5 cents

The bot command stuff has really gotten out of hand I think! I don't want to sound like an old timer or anything.. but I remember when comments were comments

@cmplxty, "I remember when million was a million" lol
my guess -- the folks are the problem, not the bots
the thing is, that good commenting is not rewarded... usually...
but folks appreciate extra tokens -- even if they worth 0,0001 🤓

Make sense recently i change the way i use these command bots lets say if the person have high responds and high upvote post i will only use one command or none at all

if new hiver i might try to help them out by using 3 bots to give them a boost so they can convert it to hive so they can post more in the future but depends on the quality as well. some referrals i bring in myself in hive i will help them but most of them i unfollow and stop helping due to inactivity or just posting useless post or lazy post.
