My Cheap Milk Tea Recipe

So a coworker noticed I was mixing 2 liters of commercial ready to drink tea you can find in any convenience store AND some 1 liter milk from a carton then split into 6-8 cups. They saw the act with a face of disbelief that I would do such a thing which made me wonder if I'm in the wrong here?

It honestly just tastes like the commercial packaged milk tea drink and the more parts of milk I added into the mix, the more it tastes milky expensive without the fancy pearls and add-ons. I don't think it was weird when I picked up the habit of doing this recipe after contemplating on why the fuck people would spend so much money ordering this stuff on food deliveries when they could have save some costs doing it at home for ALMOST THE SAME taste.

It was then I realized that I made a life hack. If a cup consists of around 240 ml, and you're mixing 1L tea and 1L milk, you get around a volume of 8 cups 1:1 ratio. Now it's an acquired taste preference so I do a 2:1 ratio, with 2L tea and 1L milk. I could save up 1/4 to half of the cost for the same volume with this recipe than ordering the same product over food delivery or falling in line in a food kiosk.

And I think to myself, maybe I'm the cray cray one here? since people are willing to pay extra for the authentic commercial adulterated recipe for ALMOST the same taste, maybe the magic is in the tapioca or the packaging? I don't know, I just know that in terms of taste, it just tastes the same, cheaper, no pearls or the added fancy things.

I could probably expand the formula by using red tea, green tea, oolong tea just for show. But the encounter made me realize how much my small cost effective life hacks weird people out.

I order a cup of hot coffee, then place it on the refrigerator to cool. I don't want to pay an extra 5 peso difference for the ice and it just dilutes the taste.

I probably commit more cheap life hacks that are odd but I would only realize these being odd if someone points them out.

Thanks for your time.

Hahahahahaha they were in disbelief 😂 I guess they thought it’s milk tea isn’t something you make in your own, and buying from a store is usually the thing.

I think the part where I use base ingredients that you can find conveniently in any combini and how easily it can be rationalized that my cheap route is better than the experience they pay for is the part the induces disbelief.

You are smart. Making our own tea or coffee is normal. The weird thing is people spending crazy amounts of money for others to make those things for them. !BBH

Well, there's a market opportunity for catering to the lazy. It's not that we can't do it, we just don't want to spend time doing it so we pay others to do it in exchange for their time too.

What if, you started your own tea shop?

Too many of those popping up here that you'll find one in every corner here. I'll shitpost for revenue because that's considered farming and it's a business here.

Coming up with this hack is very amazing, rather than paying so much for coffee and tea made by others. You're really smart.

More like too cheap to pay for what the cool kids can afford but I'll take the compliment.

I just joined a Facebook group about making things from scratch..the problem is we are made to believe we can't. Anyone that thinks that we can't is the weird one to me!

There's an economic incentive to condition people that paying for convenience is the way to go. It saves time but you spend money to not spend time on it.

We mostly pay for convenience, but if we make the effort to make our own, we could save a lot instead of splurging on expensive ones.

I wonder what tea and milk brand you’re using 🤔 try to add boba next time! you just have to cook it for a while though (still better than paying for those extra pearls!)

I wonder what tea and milk brand you’re using

That selecta fortified milk carton, and maybe the chocomilk version of funz, any brand works. 1:1 ratio works for me, could hardly tell it apart from other commercial milk tea on a bottle sold. It's the quickest and laziest way to enjoy the drink. Will entertain putting in some boba when with company~

You can experiment with the tea like lemon, red, oolong, or plain green tea on top of the milk.

I didn't dare using milk powder because that's being barbaric.

This idea is much better than paying more at shops. You're basically paying for their brand name. Hahaha

I like tea with soy milk, but the hot version... I also try to experiment on my coffee rather than going to fancy coffee shops or cafe... 😎✨

Yeah, figured the added costs came from the brand, materials, rent they pay, and the middle man delivery fee. You can pay for the same things but cheap with already premade materials. I'm not into coffee experimenting since the instant coffee + sugar combo is already enough, cheap and just enough to keep my eyes awake.

I usually drink my coffee black, but when I'm in the mood for something sweet, I opt for one or two shots of coffee mixed with condensed milk and soy milk. I typically enjoy this combination when I'm feeling stressed and want something refreshing. Most of the time, I just stick with plain coffee. The great thing about experimenting with flavors is that we can adjust drinks to suit our taste! :)
