Today I am going to share some shots of the Hurricane Barrier wall here in New Bedford but first some info about it
the Wall is built to protect about 1400 acres of land in New Bedford, well more the buildings on the land I should say, it covers about 80% of the area that was badly damaged by flooding in the September 1938 and August 1954 hurricanes
Construction of the New Bedford Hurricane Protection Barrier as it is properly titled, began in October 1962 and was completed in January 1966, costing $18.6 million.
The project is divided into three principal features: a barrier extending across New Bedford and Fairhaven Harbor with an extension dike on the mainland; Clarks Cove Dike in New Bedford; and Fairhaven Dike.
how effective is it you may ask, I havent found recent info but I did read The project has prevented $24.1 million in flood damages and coastal tidal surge since it was built (as of September 2011).
The barrier extending across the harbor consists of a 4,500-foot-long earthfill dike with stone slope protection. The barrier has a maximum elevation of 20 feet and a 150-foot-wide gated opening to accommodate commercial and recreational navigation.

This firts shot is taken on a boat ramp at one end of the Harbor walk way on top of a portion of the wall, the portion of the wall you see here doens not have the walkway path

this shot was taken on the harbor walk looking back towards this site where they are constructing wind turbines, it was the reflections that caught my eye

it is possible to walk on this portion of the wall, you just have to watch your step as it is a lot of big rocks, when theres plenty of light its easy to do, not so much inthe dark

and this is a road which heads out to the centre of the Hurricane barrier wall, where the New Bedford and Fairhaven parts of the Walls meet,, there is a gate so the only vehicles on it as the workers who control the gate on the wall to allow ships to pass

Such beautiful pictures of a calm sea... The barrier wall really is a no brainer, hurricanes don't pass that way very often and aren't very strong when they get there, but can do massive damage. Having been through several hurricanes in the Caribbean, preparation is the difference between life and death.
My favorite of the day is number three, just so eye pleasing. You really have a great eye for photography!
thanks so much and also for the feedback, LUckily and i hope I am not tempting fate, I have only seen the effects of a couple of hurricanes, but they can do so much damage to me its a no brainer as you say to build it
Nice skies and reflections from the barrier. Interestingly there is talk of barriers to wildfires and the comment "we don't try to stop hurricanes" was made 🤦 we always have. Maybe not successfully but ...

I have seen the same comment about we do not try and stop hurricances, and think its a silly point for two reasons
One many places do put in things to try and reduce the impact of hurricanes
and secondly, I feel even if they didnt, if there are measures that can be implemented to prevent any kind of disaster why wouldnt it be a good idea to do it
