MUSIC: Local Music Scene in Cape Town, South Africa, reeling with Grief, Confusion and Anger - Andy Lund, Dead - and with Questions unanswered?(ENG/ESP)

Hello everybody, it’s Jasper the part-time singer/songwriter from Cape Town, South Africa. (I share music posts regularly on HIVE, including the Three Tunes Tuesday, Hive Open Mic, Retro Music and Hive Music Festival challenges every week.)
Tonight, I’d like to write about what is going on in the local music scene, simply to get it off my chest and hopefully a bit off my mind as well…
About two weeks ago, a local singer/songwriter named Andy Lund passed away while visiting Italy. I met Andy Lund properly for the first time back in September 2022, when we both played at the same small music event. He struck me as one of the best solo performers I have seen in South Africa, and he played and sang with a passion and intensity that I hope to emulate one day, if I continue to improve…
To be honest, there are a couple of South African musicians that I think should be world famous, but perhaps the music scene in Cape Town is too small, or they haven’t been lucky in marketing and radio play… these are the kinds of people that make me feel not too hard on myself for not being a household name in Cape Town either – if they couldn’t make it, neither should I?
When I met Andy, he seemed soft-spoken (once off stage), kind and encouraging. He wanted me to come play at an Open Mic that he used to organise in the city centre.
Here are a few of his performances I have found on Youtube. I recognise the songs, but I think he had actually improved significantly in his performance of them and others by the time I got to see him play in person only a few months ago. He was a full time musician and photographer and could dedicate a lot of time to his craft – (I will probably always be a little jealous of full time musicians, even as I watch them struggle to live on the income…)
So he has recently passed away, and that explains the grief that a lot of people who know the Cape Town music scene are feeling. Many people, mostly other local musicians, are sharing memories and tributes to Andy Lund on their facebook pages…
But why is there confusion and anger?
Well, a lady who is a law student and a freelance journalist has been looking up many of the Facebook statuses that people are making in tribute to the passing of Andy Lund and commenting the following:
•Andy Lund was apparently on trial for attempted murder, and other crimes, against a woman.
•His death before the trial’s verdict leaves the victim without justice.
•She is investing the case, claims to have seen grotesque evidence, and believes he was definitely guilty, and was headed for significant jail time…
•As such, she is not mourning the death of Andy Lund (“Good riddance”), and thinks that none of the rest of us should be mourning his death either.
Now, obviously this surprises me. I can’t claim to have known Andy Lund well enough to be convinced of his innocence or his guilt… Maybe he did these things, maybe he didn’t. As a fellow musician, I feel an unusual bias… hoping that he was innocent – I don’t know if that makes sense?
However, it is heartbreaking to see this law student / freelance journalist start fights with people I know who are grieving the loss of Andy Lund, and only know his good side as an amazing musician and friend.
From what I can tell from the fights happening between this person, and good friends of Andy Lund:
•It seems Andy Lund was under-going some sort of trial before his death. Friends of Andy Lund seem to think that the female accuser is lying.
•Andy Lund was using William Booth as his lawyer. William Booth is quite a notorious and famous defense attorney in Cape Town.
•On behalf of Andy Lund’s family, William Booth has now served the law student / freelance journalist with a “Cease and Desist” letter, demanding that she take down her “defamotary or derogatory” posts about Andy Lund and publically apologise. She has seen the letter and shared it on her Facebook, but she does not seem to be backing down at all.
So here we all are – sad that Andy Lund has passed away, but also confused and angry. Was Andy Lund guilty? Why is this law student / freelance journalist lady being so particularly provocative towards grieving friends? We will probably never get a verdict either way.
To be honest, I have seen huge failures with South African police detectives and the Courts in the past, including in the case where my previous Managing Director was murdered in a botched hi-jacking (see post below), so I am sure that there are some South Africans who may have even disputed the Trial Verdict if it had been reached either way!

We have to accept that we will never know if our fellow local musician was unjustly violent towards a woman or not… and then move on.

He was very young!
Wonder what caused his death at such a young age.
It can be difficult for people if there are questions that can never be answered..
I believe he died of some kind of breathing complications, and that he had asthma - but I don't know the details at all! He passed away in Italy.
I feel a song coming on 🙏?
This is an interesting story @jasperdick, I’m sorry to hear a treasured icon in your experience has passed, and yes who knows what to think. Cape Town is a crazy place bro, I don’t even know the half of it! But congrats to you for still being here and a being a proud dad and talented musician 😎🫶🏼
I hope justice is considered for everyone involved and affected.
Mucho amor 👊🏼
Have you been to Cape Town? I hope you would love it!! It's many worlds separated by small distances... sometimes just a road or a railway line...
I’ve not left the Uk since I was 2 years old man! Entrenched here for too long and finally getting to escape to the Evian mountains in July! So I’ve never been anywhere apart from Portugal in 1994 haha.
I’d love to travel anywhere and explore but with so many kids and the dog it’s hard to even get a few hours to do something fun haha
What an incredibly sad story, all around. The ultimate truth will likely never be known, except that an incredibly talented musician is no longer with us.
One simple truth is that there are many very talented musicians who are known only in local circles. Popular acts are as much hype and marketing as they are talent.
Well the Facebook chaos seems to be dying down...
Yes, it is interesting to see who makes it and who doesn't. One South African act, Jeremy Loops, apparently has a marketing degree (as well as loads of talent).
I think most of our reasonably successful acts know how to record and mix themselves, and so don't have to spend huge amounts of money, while playing around perfecting their arrangements...
