MISSION MARKET

A big thanks to @terganftp who offered the mission market an opportunity to explore various markets and compare their prices. In some cultures, it is unusual for men to enter markets, whereas in the northern culture of Nigeria, men do the market shopping on behalf of their wives. Today’s weather was good, and a little drizzle of rain cooled the atmosphere. My style of marketing was to conduct a market survey of some items at various selling points, which ranged from the big mall (Shoprite), a thrift venture, a supermarket, the general market, and the home-side market. It was a hectic day, but it was fulfilling.

The few items in focus are listed below, and I will attempt to make comparisons that should interest you in deciding which option to go for.

SUGAR: This can be in the form of cubes or granulations.

1kg pack of granulated sugar costs N1600 ($2.13), while a 500g pack costs N819 ($1.1).

A cup of granulated sugar costs N200 ($0.27), while a bowl full of it containing 7 cups costs N1400 ($1.87).

SOYBEANS: This is relatively scarce in the market, but I was able to have a market survey at three different places.

A bowl of it went for N600 ($0.8), but the least I got for it after several bargaining sessions was N450 ($0.6). A bowl contains eight cups.

The yellow container seen here was given out at a cost of N1500 ($2), meaning we can get three bowls from there.
A bag of Soybeans was said to cost N32000 to N34000 ($42.67–$45.33), which contains 5 drums plus 3 yellow containers. Unfortunately, the bag of Soybeans was unavailable, as was the drum.

This comparative market survey revealed variations in prices for the same products, but most of the products were in similar ranges.

Though the market survey was time consuming and challenging, it seems I would love to venture more into comparative price purchases; that way, I am able to get value at a yet lower price.

Thank you for reading. I would love to have your comments and contributions.

I sent you some money to cover the mission... However, if it didn't cover your costs let me know and I'll see if I can top it up. As for getting prices and stuff...Wow.

First thing I loved to see: That the prices that I used for my "Surviving on $1/day for food" also apply to Nigeria IF the ingredients are bought in bulk. Bulk Flour, Bulk Sugar, Bulk Soya Beans are all relatively inexpensive.

I remember @monica-ene saying it was absolutely impossible to survive on a small budget. Now I know it's super hard but with planning and joint buying it could be possible.

I'll do a deeper delve into the numbers you wrote in a later post but I'm tired from work and have to work again tomorrow and cousins coming from far away on Sunday...and work Monday....

....So if it takes a little while don't be too surprised...but I will get there 😜

Joint buying a good choice when individuals with common interest come pull resources together to buy needed items.
