Out with the Old and in with the NEW

Out with the old and in with the new on this #beersaturday night.

Not to worry the Mrs. @handofzara and I are just fine although I am a bit of an "old" she is not looking for a "new".

Just needed to get that out of the way in case any of you took the title the wrong way. As it is highly conceivable that one day the Mrs. @handofzara might say that to me "out with the old and in with the new".

That is why I try to keep a low profile and never speak to much.

I am talking Fat Tire Ale brewed by New Belgium Brewery of Colorado and Asheville, North Carolina.

So the story goes something like this, after years of brewing the Amber Ale, sales have fallen off as of late so New belgium decided for the third time to change the formula of its original beer, Fat Tire.

I say the third time because New Belgium did brew a Fat Tire Belgium Ale for a brief time. Apparently there was great confusion and New Belgium quickly reverted back to the original formula.

Not so brief a period of time that @handofzara does not remember and in fact I actually did a #beersaturday post long ago and far away. Five years ago to be exact, I posted Beach Beers.

That picture was one of my favorite beer photos.

So, New Belgium decided to change up the formula and I decided to do a little two-fisted drinking to see if I could tell the difference.

First difference was the head. The new poured with a much frothier head that stuck around.

The old poured with a larger head but the head was actually thinner and did not stick around.

The second difference was the aroma. The "old" had the aroma of malts almost bread like. Whereas the new had a bit of a floral scent, which is perfectly acceptable in an ale.

Now that is where the difference comes in, in the taste. The old was smooth malt from start to finish whereas the new had a bit of a bite in the beginning before settling into a clean finish. Both carbonated well although I believe that the old had a little heavier body.

Probably but then again I have more beer to drink and the night is young. Plus I have ten more beers to drink just in case I can discover another difference. Tough research but in the name of science I shall endeavor to discover the subtle difference of Fat Tire Ale.
