Cooking Myself a Mothers Day Lunch

avatar
(Edited)

One day they grow up and call you out the blue and ask you what you're doing for Mother's Day. You'll find you don't even have to remind them, after years of nudging. They'll show up with their hairy beards and hairy dogs and pregnant girlfriends and you'll wonder: am I really a mother of such a creature? But you'll be glad, even if you have to make lunch for them, and vaccuum dog hair from the rug when they're gone.

This is the first bunch flowers he's ever bought me. His girlfriends says it wasn't even her - he did it all by himself. I'm chuffed. They're winter flowers too and nothing to make us sneeze - succulents and gums and leucodendrons.

As I'm caught by suprise, there's not much in that I can think to make, but tortillas are always good, especially if you don't care about any traditional filling. THe crunchy salad is made of a mild sauerkraut of my own, a storebought smoky jalapeno kraut, coriander, crispy fennel and raw cabbage. It works beautifully against the softer smokier hot filling. I also dish out a bowl of coconut yoghurt and some vegan cheese that's suprisingly cheesey.

For the filling, it's leftover lentil stew mixed with some smoked paprika and fresh tomatoes to flesh it out a bit. There's also some fajita style stir friend tofu and vegetable filling seasoned with liquid smoke, smoked paprika, jalapenos and tamari. I even serve out the pickled oyster mushrooms we've been looking forward to trying. Our tortillas are far from traditional, that's for sure.

We tuck in eagerly - whilst he's become quite adult by buying me flowers, he's still a little late and we're starving.

My mother skills did kick in after lunch though, when I insisted there was no way I was bloody well cleaning up, and that was for sons to do. He happily agreed, giving me a big hug.

'Love ya, Mum', he says. I wonder sometimes if cupboard love has anything to do with it. I'm sure it does. But he's here, in my house, and it's a happy Sunday.

Even if I bloody well have to cook dinner as well.

With Love,

Well, kids are always kids in front of us - no matter how old they or we become.

We know that the boys have grown, when they do things voluntarily. I am very glad that your son came to visit you and that you spent a beautiful day by his side, even when you had to cook, hahahaha. Those lentils and those vegetables look great!

Love it! That bouquet is gorgeous! Fabulous choice by him. I opted for a dried bouquet from the farmers market for my mother for something a bit different, as well. And of course I helped with the cooking, haha! It probably helps my mother had three girls. ;)

Three girls, I can't even imagine!!! I can't even imagine Jarrah having a girl, since I obviously had a boy. I thought of you.. did you see how much their pup has grown!! What a scruffy beast.

I did do a double-take at the pup that is no longer a puppy! So cute, though.

I don't know him, obviously, but I can almost imagine he'd be a fantastic girl dad. ;) We have nothing but girls it seems, so like you, it's hard to think if my niece had been a nephew instead! I'm sure you'll be a fantastic gardening granny whatever the outcome.

Hey, I'm glad you had a happy mum's day!!! I love that great big window by your wood stove, the food looks awesome too. I'm happy you can see your son again, though I'm sure it's been a while now too... pandemic things.

Congrats on soon to be a grand-mum by the way... I hear these are good times to can get back at kids (we can send the little ones back to mommy and daddy all hoped up on sugar and spoiled rotten, they'll love the pay back 😆!)

Cheers!

We're expecting a deputy Gardener soon, isn't that great news? BTW my mom will never cook on a day we're supposed to be celebrating her. I think it's because she has a female child like myself else🤣.
