Are You a Bookworm?

"You know you’ve read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend." – Paul Sweeney

I grew up reading every day of my life. Truth was, I didn't fancy reading, it was a compulsory sport organized daily by my mother. "Hey Sam, You have to read your Bible now", "Hey Sam, That Novel teaches forgiveness, Go read it"... And on and on and on, I kept on reading till it became a habit. I read and consume every piece of information I saw, from billboards to newspapers, to storybooks in the hands of a friend.

It is a situation of me having to like reading because I was forced to at a young age. I didn't even notice when I started to enjoy it, I started to take books everywhere I go, I wanted to consume as many stories as I possibly could. At that point in my life, I became a bookworm. While I know my love for books has drastically reduced, it is an interesting topic as to who a bookworm is.

Are you a Bookworm?

Book worms are people who love reading. I can imagine that everyone who reads a lot has been called that at least once in their lifetime. I for one think that the term is usually thrown out "easily". Not everyone who reads enjoys reading.

Leigh Bardugo an Israel-American writer once said;

"I remember only how I fell into books, never to rise from their pages, how I was never truly awake until I began to dream of other worlds”.

Being a bibliophile means you love and collect books. It is not just a case of reading for fun, But understanding the author's mind and putting your ability to translate the words with different imaginations.

You might ask, how can I know a bookworm? The answer is pretty simple, Their day-to-day life revolves around books.

Characteristics of a Bookworm

  • Their Break Time = Reading Time :

When I started getting addicted to reading all sorts of books, I was a student. I didn't have the luxury of reading for 24hrs and I got a lot of books seized by my teachers. So all I did was waited for break time or lunchtime to read my novels.

I always couldn't wait till I figured out what the next chapter was about. I was excited about every break or free time I can get in school as that translates to reading time.

So yeah, I think Bookworms are always excited about their free time.

  • A Book is never far Away :

I don't think anyone should be called a bookworm if books are far away from them. Book worms always have at least one book in their luggage at all times. Books are part of their lives and they always have one to turn to at all times.

  • They reference Books a lot:

Bookworms are always talking about books and referencing them to people. Sometimes these people haven't even read the book. They have this strong tendency to pitch in their favorite book and author even when the audience is lost.

  • Download an E-book app but still carries a hardcopy :

Most bookworms still carry or prefer to read hardcopy books. Yes, they download reading apps however, many still read hard copy books.

This is the characteristic of a bookworm from my perspective. Some people generally believe bookworms have traits like loyalty, introverted tendencies, and all. However, I don't agree as I believe different books impact differently. You can be a bookworm and still be disloyal or still be loud in public.

I am one, definitely. I once posted about my library.
My English teacher had a huuge library and was very inspiring. One of his sayings was: "books do furnish a room."

It's been my dream to own a home just so I can have a library. I was inspired by my dad, he had books everywhere but didn't have them organised.

That's awesome library you've got! Although part of me just wants to help organizing and cataloguing them.

I personally have a small one at home but we(my family) have a library that is open for public in the village. It's pretty wholesome to see people visiting and reading in the place. Also, at some point, I was in charge of categorizing the books and this was also something I did during one of my university project where my team and I established a small library in the village.

I'm definitely a bookworm, but I HATE physical books. And that all of my life. But as I was a child, there was no alternative, so I had to use them. I went to the library and borrowed books and as soon as I finished them, I went again. I never was a book hoarder. As I said, I never liked physical books. The only time I had some of my own was when I walked home with my granny (from her home to mine) and we passed a house and in front of it stood many boxes with books. Mostly children's books for girls 😁 We took as much as we could and later my granny went back and picked up the rest. So I had lots of books to read. But after I read them I put them in boxes and my mom sold them on fleamarkets. I don't read books twice so I have no use for them after I read them. And I hate the smell, it makes me sick. So I'm so happy since the invention of ebooks. Now I can have thousands and they don't need any space 😁 and I definitely have always a book with me, because I don't leave my house without my phone 😁 I only buy ebooks when they are on sale for around 99cents. I saved over 1,000€ last year thanks to the library and Kindle Unlimited although I bought a new tablet and over 200 books (mostly bundles with 10 or 20 books for only 99cents, but I'm counting every book, not the bundles). This year I'm saving less because I'm reading more of the books I've bought. But I still read a few freebies and so I save a little 😁

Yes, I read around 150-200 books a year. Last year I read many comics and mangas and lots of children's books and altogether it was 650 books 🙈 And it helped a lot with my English learning 😊

I forgot to add that I misplaced a lot of books too. Especially the ones that were not mine :)

E-books are safer and I can understand why you love them.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hello @samostically
It's evident in your blog that you are a reader.
General reading is a nice skill/hobby I wish to develop more.
I tend to analyse word choices, intonation (for the writer's flow of thoughts, attitude, and emotions), writing styles, connectives, tone, personalities, and a long list of things when I read. I'm also a realist, a thinker, and have great imagination; sometimes I will get lost in a line, and visualise things vividly. Therefore, once I encounter a writer, I either connect with their style of writing or I don't. If, and when I do connect, I get hooked easily and have no difficulty reading their work.
Contrarily, I enjoy curating and reading articles on Hive because they are broad and I meet diverse people and learn about different cultures, and I enjoy and identify the different thinking processes of people who are bilingual here also.
I have great admiration for book worms, but I encompass the entire linguistics in my reading...and I also prefer a hard copy than an electronic device for reading :)

Thanks for your beautiful comment. I'm so happy to have you around. I am also a realist and a great thinker. It can be helpful a lot of times, however, there is a thin line between Thinking and Overthinking. Sometimes I overthink which is not so good for me.

Contrarily, I enjoy curating and reading articles on Hive because they are broad and I meet diverse people and learn about different cultures, and I enjoy and identify the different thinking processes of people who are bilingual here also.

Me too, I enjoy reading articles here. It's a gift to me.

Oh yes! Tell me about overthinking.😏
Thank goodness, I no longer suffer from that.
It took me forever to address that tendency of mine.

I hope that over time you'll improve in that area. Just remind yourself sometimes, and think what would the worst case scenario be and you'll realise that it's not worth overthinking because it makes you miss out on the present time.

Have a wonderful day/night:)))

Probably the author is a bookworm person and loves reading... but where are the photos of his library? 😊 so... something stays under question here for me 😎

as for the

prefer a hard copy than an electronic device for reading :)

both have their pros and contras. I am strongly after books... but I mean good books, as I have a solid passion for art of the book. and I definitely understand that some books... are very plain (lets face the truth here) plain stuff that may/should be consumed with minimum efforts, including room for storage and money payed for the hardcopy. some texts definitely ask to be read as e-books. but some require a good hard copy (like: kidZ books, art albums, student reading, classic illustrated editions... and simply fave books/ editions, that you prefer to re-read and spend time holding them in your hands).
smth like that. dixi! and a !PIZZA

I am a bookworm. Whenever I'm not reading a book I feel so bad. Even if I'm too busy and will take a long time to read, there always has to be one book I'm reading at the moment. I was more of a serial bookworm as a kid though, I was the know-it-all that walked while reading. I miss those days 😁

What a great post, I must point out that the title generated a lot of curiosity in me and reading everything you expressed, definitely, I am a bookworm. Especially, when you mentioned some of the characteristics of it, I identified the following: "Your break time = reading time" When I was studying at the university I used to take the break times to read a good book, I loved to do it and more when it was about reading novels with romantic, dramatic or mystery genres. On the other hand, another aspect that made me smile was when you pointed out that bookworms always carry a favorite book everywhere they go.

It identifies me, I carry one in my bag all the time that is titled Emotional Wellbeing by Osho or sometimes I change it to Shadows at Sunset by Anne Stuart, it is never missing. For me there will always be the right moment to let my imagination fly.

Greetings and success!

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed this. I love your comment so much. It shows that you are a Bookworm as you can identify with some characteristics I laid down.

Thanks for your beautiful comment and success to you too!
