Architectural Jewels of Maracay: San José Cathedral
Hello everyone! I am delighted to be back in this community to share the architectural wonders of my beloved hometown, of which I am immensely proud. Today I present to you the beautiful Cathedral of San José.
In the heart of the city's central area, the Cathedral of Maracay rises majestically in homage to Saint Joseph. This impressive structure dates back to the 18th century and was built on land generously donated by the Marquis Mijares. It is not only a religious treasure, but also an architectural landmark of this region.
The cathedral exhibits a baroque style that is evident in its main façade, with its curved lines and a grandeur typical of this architectural style. Its main entrance consists of three imposing wooden doors that give access to the three naves of the church, and it also has a side entrance. The symmetry of the building is complemented by intricate ornamental details, such as sculptures, reliefs and moldings, as well as a stained glass window that sheds light and two windows for ventilation. From the outside, the main altar is covered by a dome in the shape of a half orange, and in its interior there are four windows that illuminate the sacred space.
The interior of the cathedral is truly majestic, with its three naves, although originally only one was built, the pillars were designed to house the three naves that we admire today. These pillars divide the naves with semicircular arches, and the high ceiling provides a sense of spaciousness. The church also has five side chapels on the right side, which are beautifully adorned with life-size religious figures.
Something that captured my attention was the wooden roof of the church, since, despite having visited it on numerous occasions, I had always mistakenly believed that it had been modified. However, it remains in wood, true to its original design, with shingles covering the exterior. In the right nave, right next to the presbytery, you can see six graves where some of the bishops who have served in the diocese of Maracay rest. In addition, at the entrance of the church, there is an upper level that was originally intended for the choir and is made of wood.
The cathedral has a bell tower that is still in use and I have had the opportunity to hear its chimes on special occasions for the city. There is a curious detail in the clock, as the number 4 is represented in Roman numerals as 4 bars (IIII) instead of the traditional IV. For a long time, I thought this was a mistake, until I read an article explaining that, in the early days of the Roman language, this is how this number was written.
A fascinating curiosity is that right in front of the cathedral, in the Girardot square, is a small sculpture of the church, created by a local sculptor whose name I don't know. It is a beautiful way to pay homage to this architectural jewel of our garden city.
The façade of the church shows obvious signs of wear and tear, which is not surprising considering its location in the center of town. Despite constant maintenance work, the weather and passersby are leaving their mark. New remodeling projects are currently being planned, including a new coat of paint for the cathedral.
I greatly appreciate you joining me once again on this exciting adventure and hope you enjoyed this tour of the Cathedral of San José in Maracay. See you in the next post.

Hello friend the interior looks very nice, this building looks very imposing.
Regards
The truth is that the interior is quite majestic. Every little detail inside collaborates perfectly to make this structure a jewel in the city. I particularly liked the ceiling and although it is dark, the place has a lot of natural light.
Maite the cathedral was an obligatory stop for me in the afternoons almost at night after leaving the office where I worked for a couple of years and also when I left Sapanna, I would walk there and go inside for a while to meditate and pray.
I loved to see it and I congratulate you for the perfect and precise description of its architecture; I found out from you about the number 4 in Roman letters hahaha, I had never paid attention to it!
There is still more to maintain it, they have done great work on it, but on the outside it still lacks much more. Inside if I see it more renovated compared to 6 years ago since I left Maracay!!!!
It's great that sculpture they made in the Girardot square, it must be obviously very recent since I don't remember seeing it before. I loved your video and each one of the pictures and I also loved the separator you made with the silhouette of the biggest architectural works we have there!!!!
A big hug for you, I really enjoyed your video, you did tremendous editing, congratulations my friend, no doubt.... You Absolutely Rockkk!!! 👍😎🔥📷⛪❤️
You Absolutely Rockkk!!! 👍😎🔥📷⛪❤️
I think that every person who goes to the center of Maracay, takes the Cathedral as a mandatory stop and the good thing is that it is always open to the public.
The curiosity of the number 4, I learned it since I was in high school, that one day passing by there I realized the supposed mistake and later I could see that it was not a mistake and that there are many clocks like that in the cathedrals of our country.
The work to maintain it must be something constant because for being such a large building and its location, it deteriorates quickly, the interior however, is very well preserved.
The sand sculpture I think it must be about 3 years old, I remember that it was made for the dates of Easter and has withstood the weather and passersby quite well.
Thank you for visiting my post today and I send you a big hug. Regards.
Saludos.

Beautiful cathedral, I love the replica of the square. I love all your architectural details, thanks for sharing.
The cathedral is truly a beauty and that is why I consider it a real gem. I find the replica of the square impressive, especially for the fact that it has resisted so long standing.
Thank you for your visit and your comment
I hadn't seen the inside of the cathedral for a long time, it looks so beautiful in your video, besides the music you chose I really liked it, I enjoyed the visual tour.
The curious fact of the cathedral clock I have not seen, I am not very observant, but being in this community I am learning a little about my environment, anyone would have thought like you that it was a mistake in the numbers, I really liked to know this, nice post @maitt87
The clock thing is something that not many people realize, we just assume that the numbers are correct. Also because it's so high it's normal for it to go unnoticed.
I am glad to know that you liked my tour and I thank you for your visit. I send you a big hug.
Hello @maitt87, I liked the interior design of the cathedral, especially the semicircular arches and the columns in white, vanilla and gold; the ceiling has a great finish that matches the walls, definitely every detail of the architectural jewel is very well taken care of, hopefully soon they can paint the facade, it would look much better.
Greetings and blessings!
Yes, the truth is that the interior is in very good condition and with colors that not only match, but give a sense of calm that is very good for this type of place, favoring meditation and prayer.
I also hope that the façade will soon be refurbished, that would make this building that we Maracayeros love so much, much more beautiful.
Our Cathedral is an imposing structure of great beauty. Thank you for bringing it to us. A big hug.
It is very true, sometimes we take it for granted because we see it every day, but it is good to give value to our buildings. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
I've always thought it's very difficult to take a good picture of the cathedral, but you've found a perfect angle and the cover of your post is brutal. Congratulations friend, you got some good images despite how crowded it is. I wouldn't have thought of doing a post of the cathedral. But you have inspired me. I hug you and have a happy weekend!...
The truth is that it is difficult as you said, to take a good picture of it, there is always a car or someone passing by, however I think that is what makes it beautiful, that it is right in our midst, that we can have access to it whenever we want.
I'm glad you liked the post brother, I appreciate the visit and the comment. A hug back to you.
Hello I agree with you that the ceilings are the most impressive. What a beautiful cathedral, I really liked it. Beautiful photographs.
The roof, due to its altitude and good care, is something really magnificent and also brings a lot of freshness to the environment in the midst of our rather tropical climate.
I'm glad you liked the photos. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

A little more than a year ago I did a review of this church, I was very struck by its history and the façade always captured my attention. Greetings!
Although I have been coming to Maracay all my life, it was with this post that I decided to get to know the history of this church and also its architecture, which really did not cease to amaze me. Thanks for your visit.
👍
The cathedral building always has a distinctive and extraordinary design and architecture. I really like to see the selection of interiors in the building, it really gives peace to people who come. Amazing post @maitt87
It is very true, the interior of the cathedral generates a lot of peace and tranquility to anyone who visits it, despite being in the middle of the central area of the city. I think the interior acoustics help a lot with its wooden ceilings.
