The Guanaroca Indian fountain and its legend [en/es]
In the city of Cienfuegos, known as the Pearl of the South, stands one of Cuba's most emblematic and captivating sculptures, the Guanaroca Indian Fountain. This work, created by the famous Cuban sculptor Rita Longa, is not only a symbol of the city's cultural identity, but/ also a testimony to the artistic talent of the author.
The fountain is located at the Punta Gorda traffic circle, where Padro Street ends, which then borders the seawall and ends at that traffic circle. It is a point of reference for both Cienfuegos residents and visitors. The sculpture of Guanaroca, made of bronze and of great size, stands in the center of a pond. The figure of the Indian, with her arms raised and a bird in her hands, is in harmony with the natural surroundings, creating a visual connection that extends all the way to the sea. This harmonious integration between the artwork and the surrounding landscape is a testament to Longa's genius and his ability to capture the essence of nature and mythology in his work.
The fountain begins with a cobblestone wall almost a meter high, which gives it visibility from a distance. This wall gradually widens into a large pond. This design not only frames the sculpture impressively, but also guides the viewer's gaze to the horizon, where the pond appears to merge with the sea. This optical illusion creates a sense of continuity and eternity, as if the statue were emerging directly from the ocean, symbolizing the deep connection between land and water.
The legend surrounding the figure depicted in the sculpture adds an additional layer of meaning to this work. According to the aboriginal mythology of the region, Guanaroca was the first woman created by the moon to accompany the first man. Her story is marked by love, tragedy and the creation of the natural elements that are part of the Cienfuegos landscape. According to this legend, Guanaroca's tears, shed for the loss of her son, became the rivers, the bay and the lagoon of the region. Thus, Guanaroca's tears formed the geographical elements of the area.
The fountain is not only a work of art, but also a tangible reminder of the cultural heritage of Cienfuegos, a city steeped in strong legends of female spirits that haunt it. I stood for a few moments in front of that fountain, and my nephew, who accompanied me and knows the legend well, was telling me about it, and the place was taking on other nuances for me. In the sculpture, the author, instead of putting a güira with turtles and fish as the legend says, made a bird and associated it with the rebirth of life. I could not see the fountain pouring water, but according to my nephew's explanation, four jets of water come out of the hands and the bird seems to fly away. I imagine the visual spectacle, wanting to appreciate that will make me want to see this great fountain in all its splendor when I visit this city again.
Here I leave you the images of this fountain that represents for the people of Cienfuegos much more than a simple sculpture; it is a symbol of their identity. The work continues to inspire those who contemplate it, reminding us of the beauty and power of the stories that are part of our cultural heritage.

I didn't know the story, and I had never seen that sculpture, I liked them both. It is a very moving story.
I imagine with the fountain gushing water the visual effect is very beautiful.
Yes, it is a shame that it did not have water at that moment, because as you say, source and history complement each other, it was a magical moment that I had in that beautiful city, full of myths and legends.

I didn't see where the fountain was. I don't know if I couldn't see the fountain or if it just wasn't there. I only saw statues made of bronze.
The fountain is composed of a circular pond and a metal sculpture in the center (these elements are clear in the photos) and of course these elements merge into a fountain when the water circulates and flows through the sculpture, but as I explained in the post, He didn't have water, maybe that's why he didn't see the fountain.
Oh I see. Okay 🙏
Awesome discovery @lileisabel. Despite the fountain's simple design, its architectural message to passersby couldn't be overlooked due to its interesting story. Warm greetings! 😊
