The Fortress of San Carlos de la Cabaña 🇨🇺 Part II [ENG/ES]

English Version 🇬🇧
Greetings to all the community. This is my second writing about the fortress of San Carlos de La Cabaña, in the city of Havana. Due to the extension of the place and all the interesting things to show, in my previous publication I did not reach to describe it in its totality. So this post is to give it continuity.

Like any fortress, San Carlos de la Cabaña is a place designed to protect whatever is behind its walls; cities, people, goods...therefore it was built to be durable, with walls difficult to climb and impenetrable, built to withstand attacks and sieges. Made for war and fighting. Invulnerable. And in contrast to the rudeness of its exterior, inside it held the vulnerability of the lives of thousands of men willing to give their all to protect it, men with dreams, desires, motivations... So as I walk around the place I imagine their more than a thousand soldiers preparing in the art of fighting. A battle that fortunately they never had to combat.

The fortress was reputed to be invincible so no one dared to attack its walls and the city of Havana remained safe from possible enemy assaults. Its stone walls retained all their strength and hardness and were never penetrated. It was so well fortified that it aroused the fear of anyone who thought of entering our coasts.

It is impossible not to be surprised by the rustic beauty of the place, although it also makes me feel a little sad, because not only did the best soldiers train and live here, but it was also the final destiny of many people. In The Cabaña there was a prison, and in colonial times they locked up many of the patriots who fought for Cuba to be free and independent from Spanish rule. The walls of one of its moats were sad witnesses of the executions that took place in several moments of its history. Therefore, these walls saw the blood spilled, not of the enemies and invaders, but of the Cubans themselves.

But the sorrows are dissipating when we walk through its squares and we can see the greatness of the place. In its Square of Weapons where its great solar clock is located, we can observe some of its cannons, which are also scattered throughout the site, in the defensive positions that they must have had long ago.

Its construction was quite expensive for the time, there is a somewhat amusing story about this fact. It is said that when the King of Spain Carlos III was given the information about its cost, he asked to be given a spyglass to be able to see it, because according to his words "A construction that cost so much should be able to be seen from Madrid". But it was worth every penny spent on its execution. What will never cease to amaze me every time I visit this fortress is the beautiful scenery that surrounds it, with its magnificent panorama of the sea. It is an image never to be forgotten.

This formidable site is part of the history of Havana and of all Cubans. I do not think I am wrong if I say that we feel safe knowing that over the Bay guarding the shores of our city is this immense and wonderful mole of stones.

Pero ahora gracias a tu buen post he llegado a comprenderla mejor.

Saludos cordiales.

Very good article friend. I really liked your way of telling us the story about this representative place of Cuba. The truth is that I knew practically nothing of that history. I only knew the basics from some books I've read. But now thanks to your good post I have come to understand it better. From the photos you showed us, it can be seen that the place is still very well preserved. I am surprised that after so many years it is still in good condition. That is partly due to what you said, the robust and durable materials. Well friend, a pleasure to have read your post, very instructive and enjoyable to read. Looking forward to see more. Kind regards.

A magnificent fortress, no doubt, and it is good to see how well it is preserved, it looks like they take care of it. I sincerely believe that in Cuba these historical places have always been well cared for, haven't you?.

I really liked the photo that I think is under the bridge, which looks like a tunnel, it was great.

You are right, there is a lot of value placed on history here. Although there are some sites that have been restored relatively recently. The fortress is very nice, and very well kept. I'm glad you liked it.

Greetings @jordy0827. Incredible heritage landmark! If only the historic walls of that fortress could talk, I'm pretty sure they won't stop sharing interesting stories about significant war efforts in the past, recent contributions, and ongoing legacy. Thank you for this marvelous tour of Cuba's beloved icon! 😊👍

I was near this fortress once when I visited Cuba, but I could not go to that specific place and I see that it is great and imposing. It is good that these vestiges of the past are still preserved. Greetings !
