The Night After The Storm

It was about 3am. I’m not usually a heavy sleeper. So when I felt a strong wind blow - something I usually looked forward to, and the boom of thunder sounded, I woke up.

It was the first rain of the year, at least where I resided. I’d been hearing that it had rained in other places, but I hadn’t witnessed it yet. It was kind of strange because the first rains were usually light, and since it was the first rain since the harmattan period, they were usually characterized by enormous heat afterwards.

However, this rain I witnessed was a full blown storm. But on a very subjective level, I can’t fathom why anyone would prefer the Dry season to Rainy season.😭😭Except for the fact that clothes dry faster, which is not enough reason if you ask me. Practically everyone’s lips are dry and chapped, there’s the constant fear of going out cause unless you’re in boots, or sneakers….your whole feet would look like you did a ten mile hike down the North Pole. But this is just my opinion anyways.

I just really love the Rainy season. Funnily enough, I despise the actual rain most times. It’s the preceding weather to the actual rain that I adore. Very dark clouds, enormous breeze, chilling cold….. I’m practically drooling thinking about it. (There are no names my parents haven’t called me cause of this btw😂).Sorry for digressing guys….what can I say, the rain does that do me. Hah!

Anyways, when I found out it was billowing outside, the catalyst for a refreshing rest, I slept off. I woke up around eight later that morning. (I know, stormy weathers have the tendency to make you oversleep) And when I went outside, I was in awe. The weather was calm, cool, balmy and beautiful, but I started noticing some things as I looked around.

First off, a part of my roof had pulled out. This was most disheartening as it made a very ugly look on the appearance of the house. Since things were like this, I decided to move around the house and sure enough I spotted more things that my beloved storm had done.

The cassava trees were pulled down. Like seriously down. It looked like it was manually mauled over by a truck or something. My mum personally planted all of them, so I knew she would be extremely distressed.

The plantain tress didn’t fair any better as they suffered the same fate as the cassavas. It wasn’t something anyone would want to wake up to after the first rain of the year that was supposed to symbolize blessings, but no one was getting superstitious, least of all me.

On a brighter note, the orange trees looked so beautiful as well as the coconut trees, I don’t remember the last time I’d seen them so beautifully green. I was entranced and took about ten minutes do really appreciate its beauty. The waterleaves look really lush and green too.

But most of all, I loved the sand. It looked so brown, soft and appealing. And I knew without a doubt, that my sister who loved sweeping the compound would have a field day designing those semicircular patterns on the ground as she swept.

In essence, the rains didn’t make everyone happy, but this year we’re all about seeing the good in everything we do and in whatever situations we face. And I know without a doubt that things would turn beautiful in the end.

PS: All pictures are mine unless otherwise stated.

Thanks for visiting my blog and have a lovely week.❤️

You are so right. I too like the rainy season but the clothes are a nightmare. I love the season, the days just before rains come crashing down on us during the monsoons. Take care and I hope the sheets are put up back soon. Voted on behalf of the Neoxian city paper.

Thank you so much. It has been put up. I'm glad I've found a partner who loves the rainy season as much as I do.
