Using our alt account as the recovery account

Today I read a wonderful article about setting up recovery accounts. For those who joined the Steem platform through the Steemit interface, the default recovery account would have been set to Steem. The same is applicable to me as well. Steem is an account held by Steemit Inc company and there is a good recovery process available if we have to recover our account. I have seen some of my friends trying out that recovery process got their accounts recovered.

Why is setting up a recovery account important?

Currently, we might have Steem as the recovery account but it is always good to have a trusted account to which you have easy access. It can either be your own alternative account or a claimed account or your friend's account whom you trust the most. With the current situation we have on Steem, we cannot fully trust how many days it can take for the recovery process to get completed. It can be faster or it can even be slow.

Your claimed account or an alternative account is the best option. If you go for using the alternative account, you have to make sure that you store the passwords of both the accounts in a separate location. It shouldn't be together. If there is a possibility that both can get lost easily, then there is no point in having your alt account as a recovery account.

Most of us might have traveled a long distance in these 4 years on Steem blockchain. Imagine a situation where we lose our keys. It is not just the stake that we have there will be lost but also the time and effort we would have put on this blockchain would get lost. So, it is always important to safeguard our accounts. It need not necessarily be a situation where we misplace our passwords but it can even be a situation where we might get out accounts hacked or attacked. Setting up a recovery account can help you get your accounts back.

How to update the recovery account?

In this article, I'm not going to explain to you how you can set your recovery account but I recommend you to read this article to get details on the same. There are also some additional links mentioned in that article as to how the recovery process happens and some questions about this recovery process.

I used steemworld.org to set up my recovery account. For all my alt accounts, I have currently set my primary account as the recovery account. When I set it up, it was not updated and I was wondering what went wrong. Then I realized that it would take 30 days to take effect. For my main account, I'm thinking of using one of my alt accounts as the recovery account. I believe here there is no harm in having the recovery account in circle assuming that we will not lose the passwords of both the account at the same time. If that happens then it means that there is a fundamental mistake in the way we store our passwords and it should be corrected.

Saving the password

Having the password saved in the right place is very important. Everyone may not be an expert in saving passwords because of ignorance. Unlike the normal passwords that we usually use for Facebook or twitter, the password for Steem or any blockchain is a bit complicated. It is hence very important that it should be saved in the right place.

It is always good to have the passwords saved in multiple places. Even if we lose access to one place, the other place will always help us. We shouldn't give the password to anyone or save the password in the browsers. Most of us would use Steem Keychain to save our passwords. That is one of the best choices because we keep all the passwords there and protect it with an additional common password.

Hi @bala41288

It is always good to have the passwords saved in multiple places. Even if we lose access to one place, the other place will always help us.

I very much agree with you, and I want to add that it is very important to have paper copies, physically, and keep them in different places. This is how we secure our accounts.
Good article, helps a lot
