Christmas in my home town.

Hello, everyone.

I welcome you to my blog. It is no new news that Christmas is already around the corner; if the kids in your neighborhood have not brought it to your notice, then the weather must have let you know that Christmas is in the air. It is one of the most anticipated celebrations in the world. A lot of people use the Christmas season to celebrate a lot of other things, like weddings and reunions, as it is that time of the year where every firm or company allows their employees to spend sometime with their family, which means there won't be any excuse to miss an event.

Christmas is that time of the year where we get to meet our relatives that are scattered all around the globe. Funny how there are jobs that do not even observe this celebration, which means the employees work year in and year out with little or no time to spend with family. As much as it is good to work and provide for family, we also need to know that a little family time can go a long way to make family bond stronger, and man people can only get this family time when it is Christmas.

Truth be told, these days Christmas is no longer being celebrated like before; these days they just make it all about the family that spends the most or how big they celebrated it. Those days it used to be more religious than what we have today. Those days it was all about the family and friends gathering no matter how small it was valued and lots of memories were made, but these days it is all about what you have to offer the gathering, which has put a lot of people under pressure, and sometimes they don't wish for this season to come, especially if they cannot meet up with the demands.

For this Christmas, I am definitely spending time with my family and in my hometown, as there will be a big celebration in my hometown this year. It is called igba uche (traditional retirement), a celebration that happened every four years until two years ago, when the constitution was adjusted, and it now happens every two years. It is a celebration whereby a certain age grade retires from participating in certain activities in the community, activities like tax paying as they are now considered elders and should be allowed to rest. The entire community honors this celebration like lives depend on it, so it is always celebrated in a grand style as it is a once in a lifetime thing.

I have not really gotten the opportunity to experience my culture and traditions since I was born very far from my hometown, so I do look forward to celebrating Christmas in my hometown because of the upcoming celebration, as it's one of those traditions in my hometown that have been in existence since time immemorial and is not going to be a part of the past like some other traditions that faded overtime.
