I just don't see the hype in these things.

When it comes to overrated things, I have quite a few of them on my list.

The first one is the way people glorify musical artistes. I have seen countless live performances and shows where fans go overboard, like forcing their way onto the stage just to hug the performer, only to get bounced out. There was even one incident where a male fan got kicked off the stage by a Nigerian musician. For me, it’s pretty annoying.

Why pay for a show just to embarrass yourself over someone who probably doesn't even care about you? Most of these artistes are simply there to make their money, not to connect on a personal level. Another thing that about those shows that irks me is when girls throw their bras on stage. I genuinely don’t see the point in that—it just feels unnecessary and out of place.

Another overrated thing for me, most especially in Nigeria, is the iPhone. I have never used an iphone myself, and I won't deny the fact that they have oustanding features such as good camera quality and durability, but the way people hype them up here is ridiculous. Some people even go as far as saying you’re broke or poor if you don’t own one. There are even some girls i have met who won’t even share their numbers just because you're not using an iPhone.

I know iPhones are expensive when you convert the cost to our currency over here, but I personally know people who use iPhones and aren’t even as wealthy or rich as others who use Samsung or Huawei or even other phone products. It’s like iPhones have become a status symbol that people feel they must own, even to the point of stealing or defrauding their own parents just to get the latest model. That kind of desperation really shows how overrated the whole iPhone culture has become.

Lastly, I think sex is overrated. Yes, sex is good, but it’s insane how people use it as some sort of proof of status or achievement. Some of the people i know including my friends constantly brag about sleeping with certain girls as if they have achieved something they have always longed for or they have won a lottery, and I honestly don’t get the point. What’s even funnier is that some of them don’t even normally last long, but still boast about how much the girl “enjoyed it” or how loud she screamed. I remember i once told them I have never had sex, and their reaction was to call me a kid and they start using the word "male virgin" on me. Maybe that’s part of why I find it so overrated—people act like it’s the ultimate validation, when really, it’s not.
