A PIECE OF APPRECIATION - PAINTING

After 8 years of consistent patronage, I decide to appreciate my number one client with an expressive portrait of himself.
I can say that his consistent patronage and sometimes corrective comments on the portrait drawings I create for him, I’ve been able to improve widely in my craft and most especially time management because of his nature of giving urgent works that meds to be delivered in less than 24hrs.

Working with him was a really step up for me and I’m glad he loved the piece.

PROCESS

I created this piece using acrylic paint on Canvas.

After creating the sketch for the portrait, first thing I did was to work the background. I wanted it to bright or lighter toned background considering the figure is dark skinned so there’ll be a good contrast.

Then I moved on to working in various colours on the face, it was a fun experience but still had to be careful with it in other not to lose some major forms of the face which are very important for resemblance.

I made sure every colour I laid was following the right tone on every path of the face because one might think any colour is good to go cause it’s an expressive style of painting and miss out on the right tonal distribution on the face an ultimately losing its resemblance. And I was kind of not confident anymore about the painting at this point so I decided to take sometime off

Finally, after reevaluating the general look of the painting and every possible factors to consider, I completed the painting and added some finishing touches
