A Dachshund and the Elephant Ear : A new work and a story
A Dachshund and the Alocasia
My second piece in my new series of "animals and plants" If you'd like to see the first, it's here. I'm happily lost in darling dogs and fun houseplants. These are two things which I'm passionate about in real life so indulging in pairing the two has been a good therapy of late.
Getting back into a routine in the studio feels healing.
The Inking of the little fellow.
As I am wont to do, I love to use layers so of course tho this painting is simple in layout I've given each thing it's own layer. I really think I'll want to play with the various things in the future in new ways. I might even want to use them as repeats in some items that they original piece will go on.
Bold outlines gives some promise for a coloring page usage I think.
And certainly, after a rough sketch a scan and then digital inking, I love to get to the 'coloring' layer. A bit of Quiet contemplation when I'm adding color.
A frame in Inked black to form the composition and joyful color on the little fellow.
There is an almost "Paint by number kitsch" I'm loving about these so far. When I make a piece and it makes me smile or I enjoy the process I know I'm going the right way.
Of course there are often stories in my head to accompany my work:
*Gerhardt was a happy hound. His hopeful gaze often met his master upon her return from where it is that humans went for hours on end in the middle of days.
It was an odd time to be gone, pondered Gerhardt, for it was the best time to dig in the garden, chase bunnies, or plot revenge on the neighbor cat.
Today he was being as good as he could manage, but he was eyeing the "elephant ear" plant. It and the others, in their fancy pots set about the place, often received attention that was right mine, thought Gerhardt.
Today, the Elephant was in for it. Gerhardt gave his best baneful stare of sweetness and light to his lovely Mistress as she was heading to the door to leave. But, Gerhardt knew, it was he or the plant and today, they'd have their battle.*
I hope you enjoyed my second piece in this series and the little story in my imaginings as I created it. And for the fun of it a Gif of the layers:
I hope you find a moment of joy in your day and time to indulge in your own passions.

I know it can be so hard to get back into creating… I’m in a stage of pause right now.
As we moved to much and all is still packed as we will move again. Soon… delays are extending it more and more.
Once we get over I start my art studio up again 👋🏻🥰
