The Apostle of Cuban Independence

What's up fellow plebs?!

This is yet another recent addition to my silver stack that I recently got. It comes from a place far far away called Cuba, back from a time when their money were a bit more... real I guess 😄

So, it appears this 25 centavos coin issued in 1953 is a commemorative piece dedicated to José Martí. No idea who the fella is so I had to Google him.

Turns out he is short of a big deal for Cubans

José Julián Martí Pérez (Spanish: [xoˈse maɾˈti]; January 28, 1853 – May 19, 1895) was a Cuban nationalist, poet, philosopher, essayist, journalist, translator, professor, and publisher, who is considered a Cuban national hero because of his role in the liberation of his country from Spain. He was also an important figure in Latin American literature. He was very politically active and is considered an important philosopher and political theorist. Through his writings and political activity, he became a symbol of Cuba's bid for independence from the Spanish Empire in the 19th century, and is referred to as the "Apostle of Cuban Independence". source and further reading

As the dates indicates, this coin celebrates the 100 years since his birthday. Not much else to see here so let's move on!

The first thing I noticed is that it's one of those rare coins that inform you about their exact weight and purity silver. Dunno if it's just me but I just love it when they do. So yeah, we have 6.25 g of 0.900 silver. That's about 6.2 $ with today's spot price. Not bad for such a small coin 😄

We also have a Phrygian cap, which has a long, long history of being used as a symbol of liberty since the ancient times among many countries and nations. It even makes an appearance in the Cuban Coat of Arms

This particular design is actually based upon the upper portion of the Cuban coat of arms. There is also the country name as curved legend on top, the motto "Patria y Libertad" (Fatherland and Freedom) and the face value.

Nothing special on the edge in case you wonder

Time to put my little friend back to it's plastic condom!

Ok friends, I guess this is it for today. Nothing really special about this coin, but for me it's really cool owning something precious from so far away!

See you soon with more shiny!

That is awesome! It's hard to find old Cuban coins out there for a good price. Well done! I haven't come across any in a couple of years now!

Phrygian caps we're not fashionable in Canada so none of us could be plebs, but subjects of the Crown (Slaves) but most of us don't know it. We don't have an allegorical liberty figure like Columbia either.

I like how the coin tells you the exact details. It saves you the time of looking up most of the information.
