A great gift!

I went for a coffee today with the family at the place where my friend @giotists works.

A few days ago I gave him a gift, I guess he decided to return the favor and he gave me this sexy silver coin along with the cold frappe I ordered:

What a nice shiny beauty!

This is a commemorative piece minted in 1987 for the 750 years of Berlin, the capital of Germany in case you live in a cave and you haven't heard of it before!

What I really like about this coin is the engravings! Just look at that sexy eagle and that sexy bear. But why these two animals?

Well, the bear is the mascot of the city, occuring on seals, coins, flags and all kinds of shit of Berlin since the 12th century! And the eagle is the animal of Germany's coat of arms and other stuff.

Anyways back to the coin! On the front it reads in German

BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND 1987
10 DEUTSCHE MARK

for

The Federal Republic of Germany 1987 10 Deutsche Mark

On the other

1237 1987 BERLIN 750 JAHRE

for

1237 1987 Berlin 750 Years

The edge is also engraved with EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT for Unity, Justice, and Freedom

The coin weights a respectable 15.5 g of 0.625 silver, which translates to roughly 9.7 of silver. In today's spot price (0.64 $ per gram) that's about 6.2$. Nice!

As always, here are some more quick specs from numista:

Overall, a really beautiful piece and a great addition for my silver stack. What a nice gift 🥰

We have to thank your friend for the gift. He is such a good soul. I am glad you like the piece and thanks for describing the two animals for us. Now, I have to start taking note of engravings on coins that I lay my hands on.

Another coin with a nice epic history. It looks like it's been taken care of by the people who had previously owned it too. Lovely one for the collection.

I've wondered what the German Mark would be like today of it weren't the monstrosity of the Euro never came about. Otherwise, we'd be getting far more awesome coins like these than the boring Euro fiat.

Something similar has happened to me. Many times some polite strangers to please me give me the change from a transaction, and instead of euros they give me leva (Bulgaria's currency)! I don't know how collectible it is, but unfortunately I don't understand it right away to thank them. You know the coin of one and two leva is almost the same as the corresponding one and two euros! Aaah in these hard times, there are some angels among us!

Wow! Dont mind just being curious, what is the value of this coin actually? Seems to be a commemorative coin!

Anyway, thanks @trumpman for sharing! Now I learnt that Berlin is the mascot of Berlin. I know about the Eagle and Germany part, but now the Eagle and Berlin part!
