Blockchain: An Aid In The Deepfake Battle

The idea of deepfakes is nothing new. We have seen this concept used for a long time, to varying degrees. One negative outcome of our most recent technological advancement is the ability to generate deepfakes faster and with greater realism than ever before.

Artificial intelligence is providing these tools to anyone. As costs come down, the technology improves, offering even "free" users the ability to generate this type of information. Considering the basis of generative AI, this is exactly what it is designed to do.

This technology takes in data, is trained on it, and spits out new information. It is not simply a mirror, reflecting back what was entered.

Here is where it is ideal for deepfakes. With improvement regarding images and video, the potential of taking well known figures and generating a fake video is growing. This could have an impact upon careers, elections, and businesses.

In fact, it is likely that many within governments are using this technology. Do not think this is only relegated to rogue individuals.

So what can we do to stop this? The answer is multi-faceted so we will look at it closer.

Blockchain To Combat Deepfakes

Blockchain got a lot of attention with the introduction of Bitcoin.

This innovation allows for the consensus of financial transactions without a centralized third party. It was a revolutionary move since, up to that point, all attempts at electronic cash required a centralized entity.

Over the last decade, we saw this expand into many areas. The potential for blockchain only keeps growing.

That said, financial transactions are not the only thing that can be verified in such a manner. Blockchain, within the financial arena, carries great weight since it has the ability to provide trust. Counterparty risk is moved to the network itself, eliminating gatekeepers or financial intermediaries.

All transactions are transparent. The flow of funds can be traced throughout the entire history of the chain. One can travel all the way to the genesis block if needed.

Taking On Deepfakes

As stated, this is a multi-faceted solution. Eventually, AI is likely to be utilized to combat this.

To achieve this, information is required. Here is where blockchain enters. Due to the cryptographic nature of the network, through the use of individual hash, a transparent record can be established pertaining to an image or video. This mean, if there was an alternation, that would be noted.

When something is placed on a blockchain, it has a unique identifier, including time stamps. This cannot be modified since these networks also have immutability.

Thus, it is rather easy to see if an image was altered.

We also have the ability to track all the activity of an account (wallet). With key based management systems, the idea of hacking a social media account is removed. This means we have a degree of trust in what is posted.

Account reputation is easy to figure out, at least in a general sense.

If we see a lot of videos from an account that are not coinciding with the hash, then we know this is one that is spreading fakes. Contrast this with a major media network, where the content is not only original but fully hashed on the blockchain.

Is this the silver bullet? No, there is no simple answer to this problem.

What is important is to understand how it is a part of the solution.

Digital Identity Systems

This is likely to be a problem for the foreseeable future. One of the keys, going forward, which could aid in this battle is the emergence of true digital identities. This is a debated subject and far from the scope of this article.

However, one of the keys to preventing nefarious activity is tracing back to who is doing it.

The online world obviously had problems. We are 3 decades into mainstream use of the Internet, and hacking is still a problem. Authorities have no idea where things are centered while also having no solution. A few are caught but the majority get away with things.

As the digital world expands, this is taking on greater importance.

So far, little was done to solve the problem if a reliable digital identity system. Centralized entities are taking measures but that opens up another can of worms. This created the counterparty risk. Also, it is common for them to get hacked also.

Blockchain can also be a part of the solution for digital identities. Up to this point, we are having an issue tying a digital identity with a real person. There are many reasons for anonymity, especially with the way governments and large corporations are behaving.

This quickly evolves into a complex question with many variables to consider.

For now, we have deepfakes coming out in large numbers. Fortunately, most of them are of low quality and easily recognized. That will not be the case in a couple years.

Hopefully we can start to build the systems that help to combat this.

Your ideas to combat the deepfakes are thoughtful. I like the one that can be likened to how transactions could be traced and linked on the blockchain. These deepfakes should have such so we know those creating them.

Certainly the use of AI to falsify content in this way is a danger, although currently with a little attention you can differentiate an image generated with AI from a real one, there are many people who do not stop to look at these things in detail, when the brain is not exercised is conditioned to follow the easiest way to an analysis, and that would be to be manipulated by a fake, even more so with images so close to reality, social networks are effective weapons to manipulate the masses with these forgery mechanisms, it is important to have a response and verification mechanism to these systems. The blockchain as you comment, is an interesting way to get out of the way in the near future in which every day greater advances in these technologies are achieved. Regards

Blockchain could really help us track the source of deepfakes. It’s great to see new ideas for solutions brother. The more I learn about Blockchain the more I'm convinced it would dominate technology of the immediate future. You could see the use case in providing solutions to problems we face today

Hello to the community! We're delighted to share a more extensive post with you, as we've noticed that longer articles seem to do well with our readers. At Bilpcoin, our core values are deeply rooted in unity, resilience, and fostering a positive environment within the Hive community. Our goal is to transform Hive into a more inclusive space, similar to the user-friendly atmospheres of Blurt and Steemit.

We're taking a firm stance against the Hive Police and the DHF, and the misuse of proposals by those who seek to accumulate power. We firmly believe that every voice in our community holds equal importance, and we encourage everyone to express their opinions freely and fearlessly. Downvotes are merely temporary setbacks, which we view as raindrops in our parade, not as deterrents from our mission.

Our commitment to advocating for change is unwavering. If Hive fails to evolve, we're prepared to persistently reemerge until we see the transformation we all desire. If you have friends who've been discouraged by downvotes and have left the Hive community, we invite you to encourage them to return and even create a few new accounts. This collective effort could significantly improve the current state of the Hive community.

Regarding the Hive Police and their supporters, we view them as a few rotten apples. If you align with them, you're part of the problem. It's time for a collective effort to rectify this situation. Instances like Mr. Beast being exposed and the similar fates of other bad actors have led us to believe that the same fate awaits the bad apples on Hive. We urge them to change their ways or consider powering down while Hive is still worth a few cents.

Many conversations on Hive revolve around Justin Sun and Steemit. However, we believe that the real issue lies within the Hive community, specifically with the bad actors who originated from Steemit. It's high time we address these issues. The abuse on Hive could potentially affect you, your friends, your family, and your children. We must act now and fix this – we can't afford to wait any longer.

The trending page on Hive often appears cluttered and unappealing, filled with content that doesn't add value to the community. Instead, it focuses on farming and selling Hive. Despite being downvoted for over a year now, we remain undeterred and are still here, working diligently to get the issues fixed on Hive. We have everything documented for reference, building a case takes time and evidence. The longer it goes on, the more we find, and we get paid for our efforts, so we just keep going.

If the blockchain technology was not in place, AI would have drain us completely

I agree. While it can be difficult to fight against deepfakes, we need to use every technology we have to try and combat it. Having a reputation system like hive, or a verified account system like in social media can also help.

I just watched a video on YT tackling reverse deepfakes; where they use popular content creator pictures and videos, and replace it with AI generated faces to make it appear like the content is their own, and avoid copyright strikes. Things are constantly changing and people are finding more ways to do illegal things. We need to improve the tools battling them too.

The reputation might not be such as hive, i.e. a numerical one. However, what we are seeing is the idea that one is "known".

For example, those who constantly engage on here, we "know" them based upon their interaction. The username reveals to us they are "real".

That means if there are suddenly out of character things, we can trace back their activity to see what is going on.

That is a good option. I think it boils down to having an account or wallet be sort of like an ID to a person so we know that anything related to them is legit.

The deepfake combat process seems a good one. Nevertheless, the issue of awareness and how tech rooted every individual is will remain a challenge. This are those simple things that will still keep many vulnerable.
