John M. Mercanti is the most well-known US coin engraver of the modern era. More than 100 US coins and medals, including the enormously popular American Silver Eagle's back, were created by him.

From 2006 through 2010, John Mercanti was the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint. He created various commemorative coins and bullion pieces during his time there, making important contributions to the numismatic field.

Several of these medals and coins rank among the most popular and well-known US modern coins in circulation today. Along with the American Silver Eagle, Mercanti also created the obverse of the American Platinum Eagle, which has been utilized for all four denominations since the program's launch in 1997.

He also created the designs for eight commemorative coins, including the 1984 Olympic Gold $10, 1986 Statue of Liberty Silver $1, 1989 Congress Bicentennial Gold $5, 1990 Eisenhower Centennial Silver $1, 1991 Mount Rushmore Gold $5, 1991 Korean War Memorial Silver $1, 2005 John Marshall Silver $1, and 2007 Jamestown Silver $1.²

The Samoan national shield is on the 2023 Samoa Silver John Mercanti Eagle Coins' obverse. It shows details on the shield that symbolize Samoa's location in the South Pacific. The Southern Cross constellation is depicted on the shield.

The left-profile relief of a bald eagle is one of the stunning reverse images on the 2023 1 oz Silver John Mercanti Eagle Coins. In this image, the eagle is depicted in relief in left-profile as it soars through the skies with the sun rising over mountains in the distance.

Once more, John Mercanti has collaborated with a different mint to create bullion coin designs with eagle themes. Mercanti now teams up with Samoa for an eagle series, building on the history of his reverse for the American Silver Eagle and his Wedge Tail Eagle designs in the renowned Perth Mint Series.
