Return of the Nikkei Cultural Center Coin Show, Feb 4th, 2023

“Black birds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven

Usually I get the call from @punkysdad to go check out the coin show in Burnaby. This time, it was my opportunity to turn the tables. After more than 30 months absence the local coin show is finally back.

He wasn't quite prepared, but neither was I when I stumbled on an email notification a few days prior to the show, it was on. With a short list and scraped together a $200 cash limit we got to the Nikkei Cultural center by 9:30 am.
He went one way, I the other.

The show was put on by the North Shore Numismatic Society, a local club Punky used to regularly hang out with.

image.png

As expected, the number of dealer tables is modest; Sports Cards, stamp and postcard tables and the majority being coins and banknotes. No more than 30 tables.

Bullion coins seem more commonplace amongst the coin dealers like Perth Mint products, pandas, along side their numismatic and predominantly RCM products.

It was busy, and the room filled up fast as if everyone wanted to get in early pickings. Pent up demand? Could be.
At the end of two short hours and a choice set of questions I found answers to some of my inquiries.

  • Engelhard? Are hard to keep on stock, they are gone as soon, as I get them. How about Johnson Matthey bars? A few dealers do have them.

  • US Constitutional? Most dealers here are looking to BUY rather than sell. I noticed the serious absence of Morgan and Peace dollars with any coin albums being plentiful in US Nickels and pennies.

  • I'm looking for a Jamestown commemorative 2007 dollar? Sorry, see above answer. 🙁

  • Any 1888 Silver coins, anything not over $200? What you see is what you get.

To add, I did overhear plenty of talk and whispers about Inflation, the recession, the pension system, and even the rigging of the metals market prices. (I bought that one up.)

@punkysdad didn't get much, just a nice book on Canadian coins. He just enjoyed seeing his club friends after having not seen them for so long. “Find any silver ships?”
My non verbal expression said a resounding no, “They’re lower on the priority list but there isn’t much pickings of Cook, Samoa and Tuvalu Islands not even in small change.” I shrugged my shoulders. “Maybe in the next show in May.”

I didn’t spend all my $200. Disappointed, but I made sure I didn’t leave empty handed.

Even if I got nothing it was great to see some fine rare coins and banknotes up close. You'll never know what shows up for sale. And get a feel for what is the latest Buzz among Dealers and local market.

I am sure it was very nice to get out to an actual coin show. It's too bad they didn't have what you were hoping for though. It is a good thing you got a 'shot' for your stackitis though. It can be debilitating, lol! Thanks for sharing and your journey continues in search of more to help with your stackitis! Take care sis!🤗💞💜😎👍 !LADY

A 2 hour window wasn't a lot of time yet satisfying.
It was anticlimactic in the sense I couldn't find what I wanted but I did get a few more coins as consolation secondary objectives. A pair of RCM 2012 1/2 oz and a few 2022 QE II Memorial Toonies since I figure these are being intercepted before getting into the public.

Thanks for the visit @elizabethbit

Interesting that the dealers are looking to buy Morgan and peace dollars instead of selling, this tells you how the market is at the moment @kerrislravenhill !🤔
I agree with the rigging of the metals market.........
I have watched the spot price of silver bounce around for almost 10 years ( actually much longer) going down, going up, holding basically about the same.....
I don't see how this is possible with inflation......... every commodity is going up in price!🙄

One Dealer leaned back in his chair and spread his arms, this is my retirement fund, referring to his coins he had for sale. He enjoys Buying and Selling coins to supplement his insufficient Pension.

As I was checking out some old banknotes when an old man walking by said, "Banknotes are fake money, real money is gold and silver, remember that!" He must be an old Stacker.

These shows sure have interesting people.
Thanks again for dropping in @silvertop

It’s really amazing @kerrislravenhill how many people I run into to this day that do not understand that bank notes are fiat. They are not real money, but debt issued by the federal reserve😳

Sorry it was a bust. That trade dollar is very sweet though. Good pick

The value 'Take away' is the Dealer's knowledge and opinions where the local coin markets are going. A few hints were dropped as the good stock were stowed away somewhere NFS as if some of these dealers are hunkering down for bad times coming.
I added two half ounce silver coins and save them for a later theme post.
Thanks for the support @silverd510

Inflation is big talk at the moment and lots of research going into how increasing interest rates will impact people. Hard times a head for many no doubt.

A majority of the Dealers are retirees on a fixed government pensions. And they do not go up with real inflation but by the fake inflation figures. Topped up with OAS, Old Age Security, even that is insufficient with the real galloping inflation going out of control. Retirees on fixed income are already the first to feel the bite. At least theses Dealers have their businesses of coin trading to fall on.
Many more don't.

From what I hear, Ontario has some pretty big Coin shows compared to what I have here out west. The annual CNA Convention is the big one.
It should be worthwhile for you to spend a whole day at one. @bitcoinman

The CNA has been renamed as the RCNA. They usually have an annual convention at a given city each year.
Local Coin clubs usually put on the smaller local shows.
Good hunting!

It's always worthwhile for me.
I had plenty of other questions that pointed to their feelings about global economics and get to know how it effects them personally.

You ought to attend one yourself, and get chatting with a Dealer about his or her products. I could try to dicker with the price but often not as they are often retirees on a fixed income.
Thanks @momins

It's nice to go to the shows. Looks like the dealers want to buy too !

Some Dealers are retired and depend on an inadequate government pension, so buying and selling supplements their income. Others do participate for social reasons and enjoy interacting with their customers, clients and other Dealers. They all know what's hot.

I should check out a coin show 🪙
I feel like there’s not much around here but I’m probably just not informed. Btw I trust u far more than any “financial advisor” I’ve seen!

Cheers 🖤🪙

I think Dealers are hunkering down too. They know things are getting bad which explains why a lot of their Top Shelf Coins are not on the Tables this time around. There were some good stuff but way under from previous shows. A telling sign are the total absence of vintage silver bars and gold coins.
Thanks 4 dropping in @geneeverett ☺️

It is both a nice activity and a proper collection, I am surprised that it has not been done for 30 months, so you must have been following it before since you were waiting for it. You have a nice endeavor.

The show had been closed down over Covid restrictions for that time. Many of the Dealers are retired seniors and are therefore the most vulnerable to the pandemic. The successful attendance of the event shows a huge pent up interest in this hobby.

I Collect silver coins for two reasons;
Primarily as an Inflation hedge and Insurance for Tail Risk as evidenced by the latest economic trends.
Secondary is that I enjoy the history and themes on which I gain a lot of knowledge and satisfaction from.

I am not aware of any Coin Shows happening, nor the existence of any reputable coin shops in the Interior. Yard Sales can be an possible alternative source of Junk silver, they are usually away from sight and come out on request. That's how some Stackers by chance find old silver coin for sale.
