What Is The Share Of The Hive Power That Is Actively Voting/Curating? | March 2023
This is an interesting topic that we haven’t revisited in a long time. Let’s see how are things doing and is there some significant changes?
If we take a look at the amount of Hive powered up on hiveblocks.com, we will see that it is around 167M HP at the moment. Thing is not all of the Hive Power is being used from everyone to curate posts. Some accounts have never curated posts. This might sound strange for the avid users around, but this is the case.
Let’s take a look what share of the Hive Power is being actively used for curation.
We will be looking at:
- Number of votes per day
- Number of accounts voting per day
- HP voting per day
- Active rshares per day
- Share of HP voting
- Top accounts that don’t curate
The period that we will be looking at is 2022 - 2023.
Number Of Votes Per Day
First let’s take a look how many votes per day are made. Here is the chart.
This chart shows quite a steady number of votes per day, with a slight increase in the last two years. The number of votes per day has been hovering around the 300k with small oscillations in the period.
The sharp drop in October 2022 is due to the hardfork that happened at that time.
Number Of Accounts Voting Per Day
What about the number of accounts curating/voting daily? Here is the chart.
The number of accounts voting has also been stable in the period. Around 13k accounts voting daily.
Active Hive Power Per Day
Now for the interesting part. What is the active HP voting daily?
We can notice the small uptrend here as well. Up from a 125M at the beginning of 2022 to 130M HP voting daily now.
Share of HP voting
The overall Hive Power has increased in the period, so if we plot the active HP against the cumulative HP in the period, we get this.
The strong white is the active HP.
The cumulative HP has increased from 148M to 167M now, while the active HP from 125M to 130M. Meaning the active HP has not followed the increase in the overall HP.
Disclaimer: The way this data is calculated is taking into account the active accounts that are voting per day and assigning their HP balance at the moment. While this is accurate enough, it is not 100% accurate since the HP balance for the accounts can be different in the past from what is now, but there is no easy way to get the data for HP balance for all the accounts for each day. Because of this the data above is not 100% accurate.
I wanted to present the data in easy to understand for most of the Hivers and that is Hive Power. Another useful metric and probably more accurate when it comes to active Hive Power is the rshares.
Active RShares Per Day
RShares, or reward shares, represent the share that is assigned to each account when curating, based on which the Hive distribution happens for authors and curators. Here is the chart for the active rshares per day.
This chart is slightly different from the HP chart and as mentioned is most likely more accurate, but the number doesn’t mean much for the average user 😊. It shows an overall increase in the active rshares, from 40,000T to 44,000T (trillions).
The number on the y-axis is on the power of 16.
Top Accounts That Don’t Curate
What are the accounts that are not voting/curating. Here are the top ones.
These are accounts that haven’t voted in more than a year.
The @mottler account is leading with 1.7M Hive Power. This account has started powering down recently, it had around 2.5M HP in the past.
Next is the @safari and then @bitcube with close to a 500k HP.
The HP balance of the accounts that have not voted more than a year is close to 30M Hive Power. This represents 18% out of the 167M HP at the moment.
A 18% dormant Hive Power
From what can we see from the above there seems to be a small uptrend in the amount of active HP, with the biggest dormant HP account now in a power down mode. There is around 30M HP that are not been used for curation, and this number is quite constant during the period.
All the best

@tipu curate
Upvoted 👌 (Mana: 24/44) Liquid rewards.
Ah its interesting that 167 Million Hive is already powered up by so many users around the world. Curating other posts with an available HP is adding a value to the community.
I'm curious why that person doesn't use his hive power, even though it's very valuable for a beginner like me.

Because if all of it voted all it could there would be nothing left of the pool for anybody else.
When whales vote everybody else's vote loses value.
I don't really understand how it works, isn't it that the more support people get the better it is, why should there be a limit to the value of a post
Because we are getting governance tokes given to us, and the most powerful control freaks in the pond don't like their power diluted, iyam.
Any given to you is that much less that they can have.
You got no excuse I created a system starting to do well with a hybrid autocuration. Hive whales protecting their bags I doubt they interested in curation not enough incentive. Second layer changes things
You can bring a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Unfortunately you screaming the same thing and hive whales doing the same thing. What's that called if you expect a different result? May as well join us. Atleast you'll be doing something different about it. People will start doing something about it. They aren't crazy lol

Just as soon as a viable alternative presents itself, I will surely be looking it over and kicking the tires.
No, hive-engine tokens are not viable, for my purposes, at this moment.
You probably going to be waiting a long time around here, lol

I'm ok with that, I've got what I need, just need it grow in value.
Not all of us are primarily motivated by money and control.
I'm sending you some bbd coin now, not to dump for favor of hive corruption but so you can study our market tokenomics for a month against this corrupt system you support. That way you're out of excuses. Once you have the data do whatever you wish with it. We're not interested in opinion just market data. We want to show you the info, if after a month you don't like it dump it. We just don't want people like marky dumping just to dump lol

Thanks, I'm hoping for your success.
You still crying about the same thing years later I see, a stake-based platform distributes stake stake-based.
And, you are still running a gang to increase rewards.
Did you get elected to come bust my chops, or what?
Just reading comment section of posts and unfortunately looks like the mute function didn't save me from your idiocy.
Nor me your's.
Wow it is surprising to know about this accounts and thanks for sharing.
It still would be great to see a chart of HP versus total Hive in circulation from a historical perspective.
Something like this:
Thanks for sharing these incredible stats with us. This information is very interesting no doubt. Because I believe that if you are working on any project you must have maximum knowledge about it.
I think the reason were not seeing more votes is because a lot of them are bots on Splinterlands and they don't use the blogging portion of hive.
That's a detail overview and increased our knowledge , I am sad to see 18 % of Hp is going useless. I urge them to come to hive platform and select some good authors who are posting on the daily basis and reward them using the auto voter.
Probably just investors looking to profit soon, as long as that HP keeps growing its fine, Hive is very young and its natural to have early investors with a ton of Hive that was just an investment and not meant to be use for upvoting
Is it possible to find out how much hive has been converted into layer2 coins? (So how much hive is held on hive-engine and the other dex's?)
What I'm trying to get at is how muck hive is locked on the second layer.
Last time I checked around 5M
very interesting infomartion @dalz, thanks for sharing!^^
Why do you think such a big % is dormant atm?

Please can someone delegate some hive power to me
I just delegated some RCs to you
Thank you very much
I just finished making two post and still had little RCs
The @bitcube account has been idle since 2016, and that happened suddenly without notice (prior to going offline, there was active engagement). There was a theory circulated that the person behind it may have died without giving anyone the keys, but I have no idea if that is true.
The @mottler account was inactive since the start of the Steem chain (never engaged to my knowledge) before recently powering down.
Mottler surprised some people around here :)
Any info about the safari account?
Not familiar with it.
It is actually not true, bitcube is alive and he left the crypto space. I have talked with him last year regarding this matter at first he talked, but after that never replied nor saw my messages.
That's good to know, thanks! No one was able to connect with him back then.
Interesting charts! Sad that some really powerful accounts out there are not active anymore!
Great insight and I see a strong active HP voting compared to just 18% dormant. I was expecting less activity, but it seems that once users are hooked up they will engage actively.

It blows my mind how top accounts don't curate... what a waste...
Great stuff, just wrote a post a few days ago where my guess was there was about 200m HP staked and probably a bit less voting, good to have some concrete numbers now!
Astonishing figures what you show us today, so, Hive is progressing in terms of metrics. Do you think this trend will continue in the future, and even speed up a little more? Honestly I hope so, because it's just great to see things grow and progress for our platform.

I am glad to be included among the 13k accounts voting daily.
