Shogun - Good for these times (No spoilers)

In current times it is becoming increasingly difficult to find series or movies that at least serve the purpose of entertaining. New content of all genres is broadcast practically every day and life would not be enough for us to be able to see it all, but the truth is that perhaps 95% (the percentage that comes to mind) is garbage content or of little interest, well, for at least for me. I personally don't confine myself to specific genres, but the ones I like above the others are those related to medieval fantasy, science fiction, historical dramas, and so on.

In this order of ideas, it is clear that films and series from the universe of The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and those set in ancient China or Japan are ideal for me. In some ways I feel that those adaptations in which our minds go back centuries ago, give us an idea of what life was like in those curious and turbulent times, but if you add a little good drama and fantasy to that, Well, entertainment is guaranteed.

This is how I came to Shogun, a miniseries set in feudal Japan that tries to tell us events (fictional or not) related to the first meeting between East and West, a cultural clash that in any case was going to generate conflicts taking into account the tendency of Europe to colonize foreign lands and then plunder their resources, but it turns out that the Japanese were not going to be so naive, although it is true that they managed to introduce cultural and religious elements, taking all the loot was going to be more complicated.

But this series is not just about that, the main focus is linked to internal politics taking into account that the Shogun (top leader or king of Japan) of the moment died, but his heir was not ready due to age issues, so before After dying, the Shogun established a kind of transitional government in which five regents had to maintain order in Japan until the heir was old enough to take the "throne", but hey, five people are enough when it comes to sharing decisions, philosophies and policies, so the conflict between these was the order of the day.

Added to these conflicts was the arrival of a foreign ship that seemed to be adrift, the crew members were in very poor physical condition which was indicative of being lost and that chance led them to a Japanese port. There, an English man with a rhetorical attitude, with a certain cunning and with an evident resentment towards the Portuguese and Spanish, manages to attract the attention of one of the regents who sees an opportunity to take advantage of the arrival of that ship to take some advantage. in front of the other four regents who are clearly against him and seek to remove him from the game.

But I won't tell you more, from now on you must be the ones to explore this interesting story in which heavy politics, honor, betrayal and good drama come together quite well to keep us expectant of the decisions of the protagonists and of the events that will take place after this. Regarding the cast, there are some well-known faces, among them Hiroyuki Sanada and Nestor Carbonel stand out. Most of the actors are Japanese, but this makes sense considering the historical context of the series.

Something I like about this series is that we know in depth aspects of Japanese culture that are frankly far from resembling our customs. At least in those times (I do not know today), they were very protocolar, disciplined and ready to serve their lord with the greatest possible surrender, in fact, these customs are what generate a strong impression on the english man who does not understand them and even rejects them, but another part he learns that there are aspects that he considers to be positive and that are not even close to resembling what there is in Europe, which lends itself to reflection.

I think this series is good for these times as it is difficult to get good stories in today's cinema, the large amount of content that comes out makes it more disposable and therefore with little chance of lasting in time, however, stories like Shogun have great potential considering the good script, the beautiful scenes set in Japan and of course the curiosity to know how the difficult political conflict that is somehow influenced by foreign factors will be resolved.

Greetings friend, I agree with you and is that lately the movies are somewhat bad and very exaggerated, so it remains to search on many platforms in order to find a good one. This one you share with us is the first time I see it and it sounds interesting for the way they recreate and unite these cultures, something that have always been at war and never reach an agreement, so I will look for it and see the action and adventure of the warrior.

I never used to watch Japanese series or movies (even though I like anime, funny, if I'm weird, let it be complete haha) but there are some that really get you hooked. Especially those that show you more of what life is like in Japan and how it was, how they became what they are today, one of the most advanced countries, of course not everything is rosy.

The cultural clashes have always brought conflicts, to capture it in a series like this, would be interesting to watch 👌

Thanks for the recommendation ❤️

It's hard to find something good that has human interest, so if you've found a particular movie or series, I'll try to watch it and then let you know how I like it.
