Special Thursday - Annual procession and concert JSJD Rzeszów 🇵🇱

Today I will describe a public holiday in Poland. A special Thursday. Then there is a holiday in the Roman Catholic Church - Corpus Christi. I will provide some information about the procession of the faithful that takes place throughout Poland and I will provide a report from the largest musical concert related to this holiday.

Dzisiaj opiszę dzień ustawowo wolny od pracy w Polsce. Wyjątkowy czwartek. Wtedy w kościele Rzymsko Katolickim jest święto - Boże Ciało. Przekaże kilka informacji o procesji wiernych która odbywa się w całej Polsce oraz przekażę relację z największego koncert muzycznego związanego z tym świętem.

Corpus Christi, i.e. the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, is one of the most important holidays in the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church. In Poland, they are celebrated with particular solemnity, and the central point of the celebration is the Eucharistic procession. It is celebrated on the Thursday after the octave of Pentecost (i.e. 60 days after Easter). The holiday is intended to be a public declaration of faith in the presence of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament and has been celebrated in Poland for many centuries. During this time, this day is a public holiday - it is always Thursday, so often this day and Friday, Saturday and Sunday are a long weekend.

Boże Ciało, czyli Uroczystość Najświętszego Ciała i Krwi Chrystusa, jest jednym z najważniejszych świąt w kalendarzu liturgicznym Kościoła katolickiego. W Polsce obchodzi się je szczególnie uroczyście, a centralnym punktem obchodów jest procesja eucharystyczna. Obchodzi się je w czwartek po oktawie Zesłania Ducha Świętego (czyli 60 dni po Wielkanocy). Święto ma na celu publiczne wyznanie wiary w obecność Jezusa Chrystusa w Najświętszym Sakramencie, jest w Polsce obchodzone od wielu wieków. W tym czasie ten dzień jest ustawowo wolny od pracy - jest to zawsze czwartek więc często ten dzień oraz piątek, sobota i niedziela to długi weekend.

The Corpus Christi procession is a traditional element of the celebration of this holiday. It is a ceremonial procession of the faithful, led by a priest carrying a monstrance with the Holy Sacrament. The procession usually passes through the streets of towns and villages, stopping at four field altars, which symbolize the four directions of the world. Preparations for the procession begin before the holiday itself when residents decorate their houses, streets and altars with flowers, greenery and religious symbols. In the photos above, you can see flags on both sides of the road: red and white (Poland's national colors), yellow and white (Rome's papal colors), and blue and white (Marian colors). Below you can see the altars (I didn't take one photo), there are always four of them.

Procesja Bożego Ciała jest tradycyjnym elementem obchodów tego święta. Jest to uroczysty pochód wiernych, prowadzony przez kapłana niosącego monstrancję z Najświętszym Sakramentem. Procesja zazwyczaj przechodzi przez ulice miast i wsi, zatrzymując się przy czterech ołtarzach polowych, które symbolizują cztery strony świata. Przygotowania do procesji zaczynają się przed samym świętem gdy mieszkańcy przystrajają domy, ulice i ołtarze kwiatami, zielenią i religijnymi symbolami. Widać na powyższych zdjęciach z dwóch stron drogi flagi: biało czerwone (państwowe kolory Polski), biało żółte (kolory papieskie Rzymu), oraz biało niebieskie (kolory Maryjne). Poniżej widać ołtarze (nie zrobiłem jednego zdjęcia), jest ich zawsze cztery.

During the Corpus Christi procession, the priest carries a monstrance, i.e. a gold or silver reliquary in which the consecrated host is placed. A canopy is carried over the priest, symbolizing the protection and dignity of the Blessed Sacrament. Little girls sprinkle flowers in front of the monstrance, which is a symbol of worship. The faithful carry banners and banners depicting various religious symbols. The entire procession is filled with singing Eucharistic songs and reciting prayers by the participants. In different regions of Poland, there are different traditions related to the Corpus Christi procession. In some towns and villages, processions are particularly colorful and spectacular, with the participation of numerous parish groups, brass bands and folk bands. These celebrations can also be very modest, where people only go around the church.

Podczas procesji Bożego Ciała kapłan niesie monstrancję, czyli złoty lub srebrny relikwiarz, w którym umieszczona jest konsekrowana hostia. Nad kapłanem niesiony jest baldachim, symbolizujący ochronę i godność Najświętszego Sakramentu. Małe dziewczynki sypią kwiaty przed monstrancją, co jest symbolem oddawania czci. Wierni niosą sztandary i chorągwie przedstawiające różne symbole religijne. Całość procesji wypełniona jest śpiewem pieśni eucharystycznych i odmawianiem modlitw przez uczestników. W różnych regionach Polski istnieją różne tradycje związane z procesją Bożego Ciała. W niektórych miastach i wsiach procesje są szczególnie barwne i widowiskowe, z udziałem licznych grup parafialnych, orkiestr dętych i zespołów ludowych. Mogą też te uroczystości być bardzo skromne, gdzie idzie się tylko dookoła kościoła.

During the octave of Corpus Christi (i.e. for the entire week after this holiday), many parishes organize daily processions, although they are usually less solemn than the main one on Thursday. The tradition of little girls spilling flowers continues throughout the octave. Girls dressed in white dresses walk in front of the monstrance, scattering flower petals. Meanwhile, young boys ring bells.

Podczas oktawy Bożego Ciała (czyli przez cały tydzień po tym święcie) w wielu parafiach organizowane są codzienne procesje, choć są one zwykle mniej uroczyste niż ta główna, czwartkowa. Tradycja sypania kwiatów przez małe dziewczynki jest przez cały okres oktawy. Dziewczynki ubrane w białe sukienki idą przed monstrancją, sypiąc płatki kwiatów. W tym czasie młodzi chłopcy dzwonią dzwonkami.

I also mentioned the concert that is organized on this day. The One Heart One Spirit Concert, which has been held in Rzeszów since 2003, is one of the largest Christian music events in Poland. Organized annually on Corpus Christi, it attracts thousands of participants from all over Poland and abroad. This year there were over 25,000 people.

Wspominałem też o koncercie, który jest organizowany w tym dniu. Koncert Jednego Serca Jednego Ducha, który odbywa się od 2003 roku w Rzeszowie to jedno z największych wydarzeń muzyki chrześcijańskiej w Polsce. Organizowany corocznie w Boże Ciało, przyciąga tysiące uczestników z całej Polski i granicy. W tym roku było ponad 25 tysięcy osób.

The event has been organized for many years in the Siberians' Park, which commemorates Poles exiled to Siberia (Syberians), victims of tsarist and Soviet repression, especially during World War II.

Impreza od wielu lat jest organizowana w Parku Sybiraków, który upamiętnia Polaków zesłanych na Syberię (Sybiraków), ofiary represji carskich i sowieckich, szczególnie w okresie II wojny światowej.

Preparations for the "One Heart, One Spirit" concert begin many months before the event itself, usually a month or two after the concert, a performance is being prepared that will take place next year. Artists (usually volunteers) start by choosing the repertoire, carefully selecting the songs that will be performed and preparing special arrangements for the concert. Then, individual and group rehearsals take place, which allow for refining each part of the performance. The choir is very popular and many people want to join it, so auditions are held and the best vocal voices are selected.

Przygotowania do koncertu "Jednego Serca Jednego Ducha" rozpoczynają się na wiele miesięcy przed samym wydarzeniem, najczęściej już po miesiącu/dwóch po koncercie jest szykowany występ, który odbędzie się za kolejny rok. Artyści (najczęściej wolontariusze) zaczynają od wyboru repertuaru, starannie selekcjonując pieśni, które będą wykonywane, i przygotowując specjalne aranżacje na potrzeby koncertu. Następnie odbywają się indywidualne i zespołowe próby, które pozwalają na dopracowanie każdej części występu. Bardzo popularny jest chór, do którego chce się dostać wiele osób, dlatego są dokonywane przesłuchania, wybierane są najlepsze wokalnie głosy.

This large event is very popular with many people, parents with children also come. There are many attractions for the youngest, including a city of inflatable slides. There is also a restaurant and stalls with various toys for children. The whole thing is well secured logistically, the event is supervised by security services, medics, policemen and firefighters.

To duże wydarzenie jest bardzo lubiane przez wiele ludzi, przychodzą również rodzice z dziećmi. Dla najmłodszych jest wiele atrakcji, miasto dmuchanych zjeżdżalni. Jest też gastronomia, stragany z różnymi zabawkami dla najmłodszych. Całość jest dobrze zabezpieczona logistycznie, nad wydarzeniem czuwają służby porządkowe, medycy, policjanci, strażacy.

One of the most interesting elements is the lighting of the event. As the sunset begins, volunteers hand out thousands of small candles for free. When darkness falls, the crowd is illuminated by a living flame of fire - a symbol of the Holy Spirit.

Jednym z ciekawszych elementów jest rozświetlenie imprezy. Gdy zaczyna się zachód słońca wolontariusz rozdają za darmo tysiące małych świeczek. Gdy zapadnie zmrok tłum zostaje rozświetlony żywym płomieniem ognia - symbolem Ducha Świętego.
