Visit Portugal - Roman Throne of Miradouro de Santa Justa
Hi 👋
For those who love exploring the outdoors and diving into history, the Roman Throne of Miradouro de Santa Justa is a must visit destination.
It was one of those typical December mornings cloudy, gray and promising an occasional drizzle. The moody atmosphere of the Serra de Santa Justa adds an undeniable charm to the experience, making it an ideal choice for a weekend adventure.

Equipped with my hiking boots, a waterproof jacket and a curious spirit, I headed toward the Roman Throne of Miradouro de Santa Justa. Nestled in the heart of the lush, rugged hills, it offers not only breathtaking views but also a connection to the regions rich history.

The hike began with a climb up a series of newly installed wooden stairs. These steps, recently built to help visitors access Santa Justa, are beautifully integrated into the mountainside. They weave through the natural landscape, allowing hikers to ascend while surrounded by the vibrant greenery of the forest.

Walking up these stairs felt like an adventure in itself. With each step, the noise of the modern world seemed to fade, replaced by the sounds of rustling leaves and the distant calls of birds. The wooden construction added a natural, rustic touch, blending perfectly with the surrounding environment.

As I climbed higher, the view transformed. The forest thickened, its trees stretching tall and proud, their branches forming a canopy that filtered the gray light of the overcast sky. The damp earth beneath my boots and the faint smell of rain in the air created a refreshing, almost meditative atmosphere.

A terra húmida sob as minhas botas e o leve cheiro a chuva no ar criavam uma atmosfera refrescante, quase meditativa.
The stairs led deeper into the mountain, offering little glimpses of the world beyond a patch of sky here, a view of the valley there. It was easy to lose myself in the moment, focusing only on the steady rhythm of my footsteps and the natural beauty around me.

Continuing the hike, I finally reached one of the regions unique attractions, the Roman thrones. Scattered across these mountains, these stone seats symbolise the areas deep connection to Roman history. They serve as a reminder of a time when the Romans settled here, mining gold and shaping the land.

The Roman Throne at Miradouro de Santa Justa is particularly striking. Positioned perfectly to offer panoramic views, the wooden design echoes the natural surroundings, blending history and nature. Sitting on the throne, I couldn't help but think of the Romans who once walked these lands, shaping them in ways that are still visible today.

The climb had been worth it. Even under the cloudy December sky, the view was stunning. Hills stretched endlessly in every direction, their greens muted by the soft, gray light.

A subida valeu a pena.
As I sat on the throne, the drizzle turned into a light rain. But instead of running for cover, I let myself enjoy it. Theres something refreshing about being caught in the rain while surrounded by nature, it's as if the landscape comes alive, with every leaf and stone glistening under the water.

The rain added to the charm of the moment, making the forest colours richer and the air even fresher. Days like this remind me that beauty isn't reserved for sunny weather. Sometimes, the moody, rainy days offer the most memorable experiences.

You are welcome @portugalcoin! It was well-deserved. Keep up the good work and you will be curated again 😎
What a wonderful place. I didn't know it existed. It gathers all the things that I love the most in life: wonderful landscapes, that pleasant sense of solitude that only nature can give you, and history, intended as an awareness of the people who came before us, and therefore of where we come from.
In this, nature and history are very similar: in nature, we rediscover our biological element, and in history our social, cultural and identity-related element. Both make us part of 'something greater'.
I thought of sharing this reflection with you because it came to my mind while reading your post. Being Italian, I have always admired the Romans with a particular sensitivity.
Another thing I appreciate is the incredible charm of miradouros. I've seen the ones in Lisbon, I couldn't avoid to stay there, they are so evocative and stimulate the imagination in many ways. I would love to see this one with my own eyes.
Thank you for sharing it with us 🙂
Hi @alecaltab 😀
Nature indeed has a way of bringing us closer to ourselves, offering that solitude and reflection that is so rare in everyday life. Its wonderful to take those moments to just be and let the surroundings inspire us!
Here, we are deeply connected to history, especially the legacy of the Romans. They came here in search of gold!
If you ever visit Porto, don't miss the chance to explore these nearby mountains, the name is Serras do Porto. Thanks a lot for your comment.
