Ocean Wonders at the Dolphinarium, HK

A visit to Ocean Park in Hong Kong years ago led us to the Ocean Theater for the Dolphins and Sea Lions show. After exploring many attractions of the park and getting up close the Ocean's Magnet, we rode the cable car up to the summit late afternoon where we enjoyed much of the view although it was gloomy and the sky was cloudy.

We passed by the Pacific Pier, watched some sea lions on their turf and then headed to the Dolphinarium for the show.

The show started with an introduction by one of the trainers while the dolphins stayed under the water for a little while. Then they slowly started to surface, probably after hearing a cue word from the host.

The beautiful spectacles begun where the dolphins did a series of exhibitions. The crowd couldn't contain the excitement and would let out "wow" now and then. Most on their phones capturing moments.

While the trainer read a story, the dolphins did their thing. Jump, flip, dive down, then surface again.

It's just mesmerizing to see how these beautiful wonders whom they refer to as "Bottlenose Dolphins" interact with their trainers and follow their instructions playfully.

Then there were also the sea lions. Pardon me for these poor quality images. I had to give them some cartoon effect after zooming them in for a closer and a little better view.

More acts and stunts happened then more dolphins and trainers joined the show which made it even more fun to watch with their coordinated movements.

Towards the end of the show, two sea lions were brought closer to the audience where they tried to interact with those who went near them.

This had been one amazing experience which got pulled out of the memory bank today after seeing the photos from the archives.

All photos are my own. 150722/10:35ph

I know this was a super attraction in Hong Kong and greatly loved by kids. I DO wonder what is happening there as the expats and the tourist culture are literally imploding. I saw stats recently that 53,000 expats had permanently left HK in May 2022. Quite a few of them have relocated here to Thailand, and a lot of them to Singapore.

I'm not a fan of animal tourism and just really hope that these dolphins get to swim free-ish and are not cooped up in tiny tanks for the rest of their lives.

Oh, I have not read any news concerning HK these days. There might be something weird going on that a lot of expats are going away from the country.

really hope that these dolphins get to swim free-ish and are not cooped up in tiny tanks for the rest of their lives.

This got me and made me wonder now why certain parks can do that, take whatever animal they can and make them part of their place's attractions.

A HUGE number of the expats who WERE in HK are leaving due to the massively increased social controls and extreme covid lockdowns. I have a friend just moved to Hua Hin who lived there for 16 years and finally said, "enough!!" She's against the social controls of Chinese government. Her expat parents who had lived in HK for 30 years plus also have now left.

What a shame... I thought HK is different but I wouldn't really know because we never lived there, just occasional visits in the past years. Guess your friend did the right choice, moving away from the country if freedom is compromised.

Sorry, nice pictures, but those sort of "attractions" should really not be supported; you have no idea how the animals "live" when they're not performing for your money.
Some are captured from the wild and many forced to perform.

Hello Anna, I appreciate you for sharing your thoughts on this, thank you :) But please know that visiting the park doesn't mean I condone animal cruelty. Maybe it's too naive of me to think that these animals are treated well... But I really do hope they are treated well.

That's ok, I didn't mean to offend or anything! 😊 But we all need to do our research beforehand.
You don't know how they're trained etc. They might not want to perform.
Sorry, but I had to say it, as I've seen some very upsetting pictures.

The best is to avoid attractions involving animals, rides, photo shoots, circus..

🙂

It's the same as every other circus. They don't treat the animals well. They punish them to do what they should do 🤬
And the same is with any other tourist attraction. Donkey riding. Elephant riding. Tiger cuddling... This all is animal cruelty 🤬
And so is greyhound racing.

Yes, the list is very long with regards to animal exploitation for our own enjoyment.

I'm not sure why people can't see how horrible it is for the animals to have this daily schedule having to interact with total strangers! No privacy!
Then, when they're off "work", they live lonely in some tank.

Still, people say, they love animals, don't want to harm etc., but if you see the comments here, most people have no idea and/or don't seem to care. Very sad..

No offense taken :) Too bad that environmental agencies allow parks or zoos to add animals as part of their attractions.

It seems you enjoyed it very much.

I have never got the opportunity to watch dolphin show physically in my own eyes. I watched it only in television.
