Castro-Urdiales: A city overlooking the sea (ENG-ESP)
Hola amigos míos,
Hacía ya unos días que no me dejaba ver por esta espléndida comunidad de #pinmapple. El exceso de trabajo y viajes de negocios de estas semanas no me han permitido invertir mucho tiempo en #Hive, pero no dudéis que no haya acumulado material fotográfico y anotaciones para poder preparar unos cuantos post.
En el día de hoy os quiero presentar una pequeña ciudad del norte de España situada en Cantabria, a muy pocos kilómetros de la ciudad de Bilbao, que se llama Castro-Urdiales.
Hello my friends,
It's been a few days since I last visited this splendid #pinmapple community. The excess of work and business trips these weeks have not allowed me to invest much time in #Hive, but do not doubt that I have not accumulated photographic material and notes to prepare a few posts.
Today I want to introduce you to a small town in northern Spain located in Cantabria, a few kilometers from the city of Bilbao, called Castro-Urdiales.
La semana pasada, tras realizar unas visitas comerciales por la ciudad de Santander, llegue sobre las 16:00 h a la ciudad de Castro-Urdiales y me hospedé en el hotel Las Rocas. El cual se encuentra en una zona residencial y muy tranquila de esta ciudad.
Last week, after making some commercial visits to the city of Santander, I arrived around 16:00 h to the city of Castro-Urdiales and I stayed at the hotel Las Rocas. Which is located in a residential and very quiet area of this city.
Playa de Brazomar
Tras hacer el pertinente check-in y dejar mis pertenencias en el hotel, cargue al hombro mi cámara de fotos y salí a recorrer la ciudad a la aventura, es decir, sin ver previamente ninguna guía de viajes con la clara intención de ir descubriendo según caminaba lugares, edificios y esculturas que captasen mi atención.
Obviamente, no tarde ni 100 metros en encontrar el primer lugar que fotografiar y este lugar fue la playa de Brazomar.
Durante mi estancia en esta playa de arena me imagine como sería disfrutar de esta playa en el verano, ya que el día que estuve en Castro-Urdiales como podrán ver en las fotografías era un día gris y os puedo asegurar que hacía un ligero viento frío que no animaba mucho a caminar por cerca del mar.
Brazomar Beach
After checking in and leaving my belongings at the hotel, I carried my camera on my shoulder and went out to explore the city on an adventure, that is, without seeing any travel guide with the clear intention of discovering places, buildings and sculptures that caught my attention as I walked.
Obviously, it did not take me even 100 meters to find the first place to photograph and this place was Brazomar beach.
During my stay on this sandy beach I imagined how it would be to enjoy this beach in the summer, because the day I was in Castro-Urdiales as you can see in the pictures was a gray day and I can assure you that there was a slight cold wind that did not encourage much to walk near the sea.
Al estar en esta playa, como en otras ocasiones desde que conozco #Hive, no pude resistirme en escribir sobre la arena el nombre de nuestra blockchain. Incluso, en esta ocasión, un chico que pasaba por allí me pregunto por lo que estaba escribiendo y fotografiando, por lo que le explique brevemente lo que era la blockchain y le indique como podía encontrar más información y leer algunos buenos artículos explicativos sobre la blockchain y como podía monetizar contenido siempre que fuese original y de su autoría.
Being on this beach, as on other occasions since I know #Hive, I could not resist writing on the sand the name of our blockchain. Even, on this occasion, a guy passing by asked me about what I was writing and photographing, so I briefly explained to him what blockchain was and told him how he could find more information and read some good explanatory articles about blockchain and how he could monetize content as long as it was original and of his authorship.
Chalet Sotileza
Después de este bonito momento hablando con un desconocido sobre la blockchain, continúe mi ruta con el objetivo de acercarme hasta el puerto pesquero de la ciudad. Sin embargo, tras mirar hacia atrás vi un gran chalet en cuya entrada había un letrero que indicaba que era un bien de interés cultural. El edificio en cuestión es el edificio más emblemático del arquitecto Leonardo Rucabado que presenta las características principales de la Escuela arquitectónica cántabra, de la que fue creador e impulsor en la que los elementos arquitectónicos recuerdan a las casas rurales de esta zona de España.
Sotileza Chalet
After this nice moment talking to a stranger about blockchain, I continued my route with the objective of approaching the fishing port of the city. However, after looking back I saw a large villa at the entrance of which there was a sign indicating that it was an asset of cultural interest. The building in question is the most emblematic building of the architect Leonardo Rucabado that presents the main characteristics of the Cantabrian architectural school, of which he was the creator and promoter in which the architectural elements are reminiscent of the rural houses of this area of Spain.
Tuneles de Ocharán
A continuación proseguí caminando por la urbanización y me encontré con unos llamativos túneles llamados túneles de Ocharán. La parte que más me gusto de estos túneles fue ver como en esta zona se desvía el tráfico de los automóviles y se dispone de carriles para bicicletas y para peatones de forma independiente. De esta forma se evitan accidentes, ya que esta carretera en el tiempo que estuve por esta zona el tráfico era bastante intenso.
Ocharán Tunnels
Then I continued walking through the urbanization and I found some striking tunnels called Ocharán tunnels. The part I liked most about these tunnels was to see how in this area the traffic is diverted from cars and there are separate lanes for bicycles and pedestrians. In this way accidents are avoided, since this road in the time I was in this area the traffic was quite intense.
Palacio de Ocharán
Al otro lado del túnel peatonal y ya llegando al centro urbano de la ciudad, me encontré que al margen derecho de la carretera había una peculiar edificación con una llamativa decoración en la parte superior de la misma.
Intrigado por saber de que edificio se trataba revise mi teléfono móvil para encontrar información de interés turístico en la zona en la que estaba y descubrí que se trataba del denominado Palacio de Ocharán. Este palacio fue a comienzos del siglo XX una de las obras arquitectónicas más importantes de la localidad.
Ocharán Palace
On the other side of the pedestrian tunnel and already arriving to the urban center of the city, I found that on the right side of the road there was a peculiar building with a striking decoration on top of it.
Intrigued to know which building it was, I checked my cell phone to find information of tourist interest in the area where I was and discovered that it was the so-called Palacio de Ocharán. This palace was in the early twentieth century one of the most important architectural works of the town.
Un castillo particular
A pocos metros del Palacio de Ocharán, al otro margen de la carretera, llamó mi atención una especie de castillo. Para esta edificación no encontré información sobre este edificio ni en los alrededores de la edificación. Por tanto, creo que es algún tipo de mansión de un particular, ya que vi bastantes sistemas de seguridad como grandes muros y arboles que impedian poder tomar fotografias de la edificación con facilidad.
A particular castle
A few meters from the Palacio de Ocharán, on the other side of the road, a kind of castle caught my attention. For this building I found no information about this building nor in the surroundings of the building. Therefore, I think it is some kind of private mansion, since I saw many security systems such as large walls and trees that prevented me from taking pictures of the building easily.
Chalet Dolores de los Heros
Tras la intriga generada por esta última edificación, decidí retroceder sobre mis pasos y retornar de nuevo hasta la playa y desde allí realizar el paseo hasta el puerto de Castro Urdiales a través del paseo marítimo.
Sin embargo, antes de llegar al paseo, otra edificación singular llamo mi atención. En este caso se trataba de otro bonito chalet que según el cartel informativo se llama Chalet Dolores de los Heros que fue un palacete a comienzos del siglo XX y en la actualidad es de propiedad municipal siendo empleada como casa de la cultura del municipio.
Dolores de los Heros Chalet
After the intrigue generated by this last building, I decided to retrace my steps and return again to the beach and from there make the walk to the port of Castro Urdiales through the promenade.
However, before reaching the promenade, another singular building caught my attention. In this case it was another beautiful chalet that according to the informative poster is called Chalet Dolores de los Heros that was a mansion at the beginning of the XX century and at the present time it is of municipal property being used as house of the culture of the municipality.
Paseo marítimo
Una vez regrese al paseo marítimo me sorprendió que hubiese varias personas paseando con el frío que hacía y también porque quince minutos antes, cuando me desvíe del paseo para recorrer la urbanización, había pocas personas en el paseo.
Promenade
Once I returned to the promenade, I was surprised that there were several people walking in the cold weather and also because fifteen minutes earlier, when I turned off the promenade to walk through the urbanization, there were few people on the promenade.
Chalet San Martín
A lo largo de este paseo marítimo me fui encontrando con más chalets que no pude resistirme en fotografiar, como es el caso del Chalet de San Martín el cual es otro de los chalets de comienzos del siglo XX y que no sé cuantos millones de euros debe costar adquirirlo.
Villa San Martin
Along this promenade I came across more villas that I could not resist photographing, as is the case of the Chalet de San Martin which is another of the chalets of the early twentieth century and I do not know how many millions of euros it must cost to acquire it.
A su vez, a lo largo del paseo marítimo me fui encontrando con algunas estatuas como esta estatua en honor a las pescaderas o esta rosa de los vientos construidas con baldosas en el paseo.
In turn, along the promenade I came across some statues like this statue in honor of the fishmongers or this wind rose built with tiles on the promenade.
Pero lo que más me gusto de todo el paseo marítimo fueron las vistas del puerto pesquero, que estaba con un mar en calma ayudado por la protección que le proporciona un gran espigón, en cuyo comienzo hay una iglesia de estilo gótico muy llamativa y un castillo reconvertido en faro.
But what I liked most of all the promenade were the views of the fishing port, which was with a calm sea helped by the protection provided by a large breakwater, at the beginning of which there is a very striking Gothic church and a castle converted into a lighthouse.
Una vez estaba llegando al final del paseo marítimo me encontré con una zona donde había varios turistas sacándose fotos en las cada vez más populares letras que construyen el nombre de la ciudad con una localización privilegiada, teniendo de fondo la iglesia gótica y el faro.
Once I was reaching the end of the promenade I came across an area where there were several tourists taking pictures of themselves at the increasingly popular letters that build the name of the city with a privileged location, having the gothic church and the lighthouse in the background.
Estatua antiguo pescador ballenero
Cuando ya tenía en mente ir hasta la iglesia gótica y el castillo reconvertido en faro, al mirar a mi derecha en pleno muelle del puerto vi una estatua de considerables dimensiones en forma de barca.
Cuando me acerque, descubrí que esta estatua representaba un pescador ballenero lanzando un arpón desde su embarcación. Este tipo de pesca de ballenas hace muchos siglos era una de las fuentes de ingresos económicos en los puertos del norte de España.
Statue of an old whaler fisherman
When I had already in mind to go to the gothic church and the castle converted into a lighthouse, when I looked to my right at the pier of the port I saw a statue of considerable dimensions in the shape of a boat.
When I approached, I discovered that this statue represented a whaler fisherman throwing a harpoon from his boat. This type of whaling many centuries ago was one of the sources of economic income in the ports of northern Spain.
Mirador de la Atalaya
Tras abandonar el puerto, para llegar a la iglesia gótica, me desvié por el casco antiguo de la ciudad. Sin embargo, pille mal un cruce y terminé en un mirador desde el cual podía ver la parte lateral de la iglesia que da hacia el acantilado y también pude ver la parte posterior del castillo reconvertido en faro.
Adicionalmente, desde esta zona pude ver varios acantilados a lo lejos que captaron mi atención y me animó a acercarme a ellos en primer lugar antes de ir a ver los monumentos arquitectónicos anteriormente citados.
Viewpoint of the Atalaya
After leaving the port, to get to the gothic church, I took a detour through the old part of town. However, I missed a junction and ended up at a viewpoint from which I could see the side of the church facing the cliff and could also see the back of the castle converted into a lighthouse.
Additionally, from this area I could see several cliffs in the distance that caught my attention and encouraged me to approach them first before going to see the aforementioned architectural monuments.
El pedregal
A su vez, desde el mirador de la atalaya vi a lo lejos vi un gran mural y como aficionado al arte urbano que soy me acerque a contemplar de cerca el mural que se encuentra en la playa del pedregal y que hace honor a las pescaderas.
A su vez, en esta playa del pedregal me encantó ver dos estatuas de dos niños en la que uno de ello se lanza de cabeza hacia el mar. Estas curiosas estatuas estoy seguro de que a más de uno le habrá confundido en algún momento pensando que serían niños de verdad.
The pedregal
In turn, from the viewpoint of the watchtower I saw in the distance I saw a large mural and as a fan of urban art that I am I approached to see up close the mural that is on the beach of El Pedregal and that honors the fishmongers.
At the same time, in this pedregal beach I was delighted to see two statues of two children in which one of them throws himself headfirst into the sea. I am sure that these curious statues have confused more than one person at some point thinking that they were real children.
Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción
Finalmente, de cara a terminar mi recorrido por esta pequeña, pero bonita ciudad, me acerqué al lugar donde se concentran los edificios históricos más representativos de la ciudad.
El primero de los edificios en el que me detuve fue la iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción, que es un templo católico del siglo XIII donde yo vi dos zonas muy diferentes en función de la fachada que estemos viendo. La fachada principal, la estructura, está marcada principalmente por fachadas rectas y torres, mientras que la fachada lateral y sobre todo la fachada posterior destaca un estilo gótico más marcado y a mi gusto más bonito.
Church of Santa María de la Asunción
Finally, in order to finish my tour of this small but beautiful city, I went to the place where the most representative historical buildings of the city are concentrated.
The first of the buildings I stopped at was the church of Santa María de la Asunción, which is a Catholic temple of the thirteenth century where I saw two very different areas depending on the facade we are seeing. The main facade, the structure, is marked mainly by straight facades and towers, while the side facade and especially the rear facade highlights a more marked Gothic style and to my taste more beautiful.
Ruinas de la Iglesia de San Pedro
Antes de ir a visitar el castillo o faro entre la iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción y el Faro me encontré unas ruinas de un templo que según la información que había en el lugar se trataba de una iglesia en honor a San Pedro, de estilo románico, que data del siglo XII y de la que se conserva únicamente algunas paredes y arcos de entrada.

Before going to visit the castle or lighthouse between the church of Santa María de la Asunción and the lighthouse I found some ruins of a temple that according to the information that was in place was a church in honor of San Pedro, Romanesque style, dating from the twelfth century and of which only some walls and entrance arches are preserved.
Castillo-Faro de Santa Ana
Esta fortaleza reconvertida en faro la catalogan en varias páginas de internet consultadas como una fortaleza defensiva del siglo XII. A su vez, es uno de los pocos castillos o fortalezas conservadas de la comunidad de Cantabria.
Castle-Lighthouse of Santa Ana
This fortress converted into a lighthouse is cataloged in several websites consulted as a defensive fortress of the twelfth century. In turn, is one of the few castles or fortresses preserved in the community of Cantabria.
El acceso a esta fortificación es totalmente gratuita y en ella hay un bonito mirador desde el cual uno puede contemplar la ciudad, la iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción y las ruinas de la iglesia de San Pedro.
Access to this fortification is completely free and there is a nice viewpoint from which one can contemplate the city, the church of Santa Maria de la Asuncion and the ruins of the church of San Pedro.
A su vez, cuando estaba fotografiando el faro al darme la vuelta, vi a esta gaviota subida al muro. Como podéis ver, la gaviota no sabe leer, ya que el cartel indica en español "Prohibido subirse a los muros". Obviamente, este cartel está destinado a los curiosos que por sacar una mejor foto pueden arriesgar su vida cayendo al acantilado.
Puente Romano
Tras salir del castillo-faro, de cara a volver hacia el puerto deportivo y no hacerlo por donde había llegado anteriormente, vi que había un puente antiguo que comunicaba con el espigón.
Este puente, según la información consultada, es llamado por los habitantes de Castro-Urdiales como puente romano. Sin embargo, todo a punta que fue construido en la edad media durante la construcción de la iglesia de San Pedro o de Santa María de la Asunción que anteriormente os había mostrado.
Roman Bridge
After leaving the castle-lighthouse, in order to return towards the marina and not to do it by where I had arrived previously, I saw that there was an old bridge that communicated with the breakwater.
This bridge, according to the information consulted, is called by the inhabitants of Castro-Urdiales as Roman bridge. However, everything to tip that it was built in the middle ages during the construction of the church of San Pedro or Santa Maria de la Asuncion that previously I had shown you.
Tras cerca de 2 horas de paseo y helado de frío realicé el camino de vuelta al hotel con la idea de volver a Castro-Urdiales, pero a ser posible con una mayor temperatura y si es en el verano aún mejor para disfrutar de sus playas de arena.
Espero les haya gustado esta pequeña ciudad del norte de España.

After about 2 hours of walking and freezing cold I made my way back to the hotel with the idea of returning to Castro-Urdiales, but if possible with a higher temperature and if it is in the summer even better to enjoy its sandy beaches.
