Durres - First Impressions / Erste Eindrücke
| After my rather exhausting trip from Patras to Durres & changing the hotel, I took a day off, before I explored Durres for a bit. Well, explore... Mostly, I was checking out supermarkets to compare prices. But doing so, I wandered into the city centre & noticed the first interesting bits of the place. But before I get to that, a quick note: | Nach meiner erschöpfenden Reise von Patras nach Durres & einem weiteren Hotelwechsel nahm ich mir einen Tag frei, bevor ich Durres etwas näher erkundete. Wobei ich hauptsächlich nach Supermärkten Ausschau hielt, um Preise zu vergleichen. Dabei kam ich auch ins Stadtzentrum & entdeckte erste interessantere Aspekte. Zuvor aber noch ein Hinweis: |

| The evening of my rest day I was already out to buy something to eat. Didn't venture very far, but still I noticed some nice street decoration for new year. | Am Abend meines Ruhetages ging ich nur raus, um etwas zu essen zu kaufen. | It shows Hafiz Ali Podgorica, first mayor of Durres under Albanian administration. He was active in the Albanian independence movement & later fell victim to internal political struggles. | Sie zeigt Hafiz Ali Podgorica, den ersten Bürgermeister von Durres unter albanischer Verwaltung. | Right beside the statue is a part of the old city wall from the Ottoman period. Not the oldest city wall, it seems, because Durres is actually quite old. It was probably founded by Greek settlers in the 7th century BC, but people lived there long before that. | Gleich daneben finden sich Reste der alten Stadtmauer aus osmanischen Zeiten. Nicht die älteste Stadtmauer, wie's scheint, denn Durres ist recht alt. Wahrscheinlich gegründet von griechischen Siedlern im 7. Jh. v.Chr., war die Gegend aber schon lange zuvor besiedelt. |

| Note the way it was built, with rather big cut bolders on the outside & more or less rubble on the inside. This represents, I guess, the original construction. Which is interesting because of what I think is another part of the same Ottoman wall: | Man beachte die Konstruktion mit großen, geschnittenen Steinen außen & Bruchgestein innen. Das zeigt, wie mir scheint, die originale Bauweise. Das ist interessant im Zusammenhang mit einem anderen Teil derselben Mauer: |

| The rather uniform block of stones is probably of modern origin to stabilise the wall remains. But beside it you can see similar cut large stones like above. Looking a bit closer reveals a very different pattern, though: | Der eher uniforme Steinblock ist wohl recht neu, um die Mauerreste zu stabilisieren. Aber daneben sieht man ähnlich wie oben geschnittene Steine. Ein näherer Blick zeigt jedoch eine deutlich andere Struktur: |

| Don't really know what to make of it. Maybe the wall was partially destroyed & then repaired with whatever material was at hand. The wall continues a bit uphill & there we see again more of the big cut bolders. | Schwer zu sagen, warum das so ist. Vielleicht wurde die Mauer teils zerstört & dann mit allem was gerade da war repariert. Die Mauer geht hügelaufwärts noch weiter & dort sieht man wieder die geschnittenen Brocken. |

| I didn't get closer to that part, because people are actually living there. They built their houses into the remains of the wall. From there, you also have a nice view on the backside of the main mosque of Durres: | Konnte nicht näher ran, da dort Leute leben. Man hat Häuser quasi in die Mauer gebaut. Von dort kann man übrigens die Rückseite der Hauptmoschee von Durres gut sehen: |

| The mosque is called Great/Grand Mosque of Durres & was built in 1931 to replace an older, smaller one. It served as a youth centre under the communist regime & became a mosque again in 1993. Rather unremarkable architecture. Therefore I turned to the wall again: | Die Moschee nennt sich Große Moschee von Durres & wurde 1931 gebaut, um eine ältere, kleinere zu ersetzen. Unter dem kommunistischen Regime diente sie als Jugendzentrum & wurde ab 1993 wieder religiös genutzt. Eher langweilige Architektur. Daher wandte ich mich wieder der Mauer zu: |

| This is the other side. Here it also looks like they took all they could lay their hands on. Case in point: | Die andere Seite. Hier erscheint es auch, als habe man alles benutzt, was man finden konnte. Beispiel: |

| A nicely carved stone, that obviously had been part of a bigger well-built structure, right in the middle of all kinds of different stones & bricks. A few metres further there were remains of another, different wall. For what I can see, this was part of an older structure, probably related to the Durres amphitheatre, which I will cover in a future post. | Ein hübsch behauener Stein, der offensichtlich Teil einer größeren, gut konstruierten Struktur war, inmitten aller möglichen Steine & Ziegel. Einige Meter weiter gab es Reste einer weiteren Mauer. Soweit ich das sehen kann, war diese Teil einer älteren Struktur, vermutlich im Zusammenhang mit dem Amphitheater, das ich in Zukunft noch behandeln werde. |

| Part of the first exploration was also the search for sweets. Half my diet is sweets, so they are very important for me. Sadly, Albania is not the best place to find the stuff I like. Particularly chocolate is a problem. Well, cheap chocolate is. You can find good imported chocolate, but even more expensive than in Greece. There is some locally produced stuff, though: | Teil der ersten Erkundung war auch die Suche nach Süßem. Da Süßigkeiten die Hälfte meiner Nahrung ausmachen, sind sie extrem wichtig. Leider ist das, was ich mag, in Albanien nicht leicht zu finden. Besonders Schokolade ist problematisch. Naja, billige Schokolade. Man findet gute, importierte Schokolade, aber diese ist sogar teurer als in Griechenland. Es gibt aber durchaus lokal produziertes Zeug: |

| The wafers & the jelly bananas are quite nice, but the chocolate is hardly edible. 'Passion' & 'Cocoa bar' are 2 typical examples of local chocolate. They are horrible (& I doubt that they contain any cocoa). Don't know how to describe it, but they feel very greasy or oily in the mouth, & particularly the 'Cocoa bar' has no discernible taste. There is good news on another food front, though: | Die Waffeln & Geleebananen sind nicht schlecht, aber die Schokolade ist kaum essbar. 'Passion' & 'Cocoa bar' sind Beispiele hiesiger Produktion. Sie sind grausig (& vermutlich ohne Kakao). Schwer zu beschreiben. Im Mund werden sie schmierig & ölig, & besonders 'Cocoa bar' schmeckt nach gar nichts. In einem anderen Bereich gibt es aber Positives zu vermelden: |

| There is good bread in Durres. Loads of small bakeries have various kinds of Graubrot of good quality. Unlike the bread I always bought from Lidl in Greece, it hasn't caused me any heartburn (yet). On that positive note, this should be it for the 1st exploration. For now, just a few more pics: | Es gibt gutes Brot in Durres. Viele kleine Bäckereien bieten diverse Arten Graubrot von guter Qualität. Anders als das Brot von Lidl, das ich in Griechenland immer kaufte, verursacht es auch kein Sodbrennen. Mit dieser schmackhaften Scheibe beschließe ich dann auch diese erste Erkundung. Jetzt nur noch ein paar Bilder: |
