HOW I TRANSITIONED INTO THE TECH SPACE: FROM A FRONT DESK OFFICER TO A SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER

avatar

In my Introductory post, I mentioned to talk about how I transitioned from being a Front Desk Officer into a Social Media Manager at an IT company.

As a front desk officer, my basic role was to welcome guests and keep records. I had luxury of time to myself with free wifi. One day at the office, I thought to myself that I can not afford to be a FDO for the rest of my life and what happens when I get to leave this place. Will I start to haunt for another front desk or secretary job?! Right there and then, I spoke to one of the IT guys and he explained tech skills to me detail. I knew those skills existed but I didn’t have a good knowledge of them. I asked him which I could learn and he told me its best I figure that out myself which I did: a non-code tech skill, Content Writing.

I began my research and took my first course on Google Digital Skills for Africa. To be sincere, that course was a lot and it stretched me. At that time, one of the employee at the Media and Marketing Department who was the content creator noticed how busy and dedicated I was to the course and she challenged me to complete the course which I did. I began another course on Udemy and that was when I felt that I needed to put to practice all that I have learned.

Lo and behold, it happened that the company wanted to employ a Social Media Manager. I spoke with my female colleague in the M&M department about my interest in the role and how I was desperately willing to learn. She spoke to the CEO on my behalf and I was given the role. Amazing right?

I need to mention that my salary at that time was not increased as I had no experience and they just wanted to give me a trial but, In less than six months into my role, my salary was increased twice.

My transition journey as so many lessons, one of which is to take advantage of every opportunity life throws at you. I could have spent my leisure on Netflix but I choose to make the most out of it which has now turned into a long-term blessing for me. I had fears while I was on this journey and I will be talking about how I overcame them in my next post.

Are there other lessons you have learned from my transition journey? Kindly state them in the comments.

Your determination and hard work proved to be very vital at the end. I’ve taken ( sorry enrolee 😂)a lot of online courses which I hardly pay attention to. Am mostly interested in coding and software but it’s kindda difficult so I mostly lay back. I hope I can get the kind of vhim you have to do all these stuff in the long run.

You see that end part was what motivated me the most😁. Online courses can be the "hit" actually. Try to find your motivation, that might push you to finish the courses.

This is an amazing success story which will bring more success on your path.

Skill acquisition is very important. You noticed this early enough and you did what is expected of anyone that genuinely wants to acquire a skill. Now, you are reaping the fruit of your labor

Yeah right. It sure goes beyond "wanting" to do things. It is the action that backs it up that matters. Thanks for leaving a comment😊
