Home sweet Home

Everyday I thank God I had decided to pursue my education to a higher level, not just because I wanted to gather more knowledge but because of the many things that decision has exposed me to, the main one being able to live on my own and get to experience life myself.

And the reason why I say this is because before school, I was always that kid who stayed indoors. I remained indoors even till my early twenties and how that affected negatively was that I didn't get to experience certain parts of life at the certain age most people my age were experiencing it, because it felt like my parents were shielding me from the world.

That wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but it wasn't exactly a good thing either because the truth was I wouldn't stay indoors forever, and the sooner they had allowed me to experience these things for myself, the better it would have been, especially for my sake.

Luckily for me, I got out when I did and quickly I began to learn new things without even knowing it, because it wasn't like my mind was set on learning stuff, I was just living and learning from my day to day experiences...and it's from those experiences that I've been able to advise people way younger than me who are just about to begin a journey I've completed.

You see, my inspiration for today's blog was due to the advise that I had given to a group of guys who were looking for hostels that they could rent. These were first year students who had just newly gained admission into the university and didn't really know what kind of hostel they needed due to it being their first time ever to go searching for a house.

Amongst the many advise I had given to them concerning the various kind of things they should watch out for in a hostel, the two things I could remember, the two things I wish I knew before getting into my hostel were as follow..

The first was never to rent a room at the topmost floor of any hostel. And my reason for that is because most hostels over here are very old, hence the roofing is weak and sometimes blows over whenever there is a strong wind or a heavy rain.

There have been countless times where I had to fix my roof during raining seasons just because water was dropping on my bed or somewhere in my room.

The second advise was never to stay at the ground floor and the reason for this might be a bit funny to some of you who haven't had this experience yourself. But you see, experience has thought me that being on the second or third floor is a good thing due to illegal police raids.

Whenever these raids happen, the people at the ground floor are usually the ones who get arrested, while the guys upstairs look for various ways to escape. One time the police had carried out a raid at my friend's hostel and some of the guys had to jump down from the first and second floor just to avoid getting arrested.

They wouldn't have gotten that opportunity of they were at the ground floor. These two advise amongst some other advise was what I gave to these guys, and I remember how good it felt as I watched them leave, because I knew I wouldn't have known any of this if I was still back home in my room, hiding from the rest of the world.

The second reason is quite funny indeed but it makes sense and it should not be taken lightly considering the situation of your place.

It's amazing how pursuing higher education opened doors to new experiences and personal growth for you. Your advice to the first-year students is invaluable, and it's great that you're paying it forward.

I can relate to feeling sheltered and missing out on life experiences. But it's never too late to start exploring and learning. Your journey is a testament to that.

Thank you for sharing your story and offering thoughtful advice.

Thank you for reading bro.. It honestly felt good getting to advise those people from an experience that took me years to gather on my own.
