How My Work Affected My Studies.
Hello, everyone.
Welcome to my blog and another wonderful edition of the hive learners' featured post. Many tried working while in school, and I still wonder how they managed to cope with working and schooling. I had a terrible experience combining working and schooling.
The money earned from working made life a lot easier, but I was missing out on school. I skipped classes and missed some tests because I couldn't meet up. Missing out on school affected my performance in school.
When I gained admission into the university, I had an elder sister who was already at the university as well. So the work load was heavy on my parents. As always, they said, I am a guy while she is a lady, so her own ratio of pocket money was way bigger than mine. The little I was getting was not enough to feed and then get all the necessary materials like handouts and textbooks. Since I couldn't call home knowing how it was with them, I had to manage the little I had.
I continued to manage all through 100 Level, and in 200 Level I decided to combine working and schooling because I had friends who were doing it already. I wrote application letters and submitted them to different firms, fast foods, hotels, e.t.c. Jovits fast food in Umuahia called me for an interview. I went; it was a success and I was given the job. Since I was in school, I told the manager I would only be doing night shifts and he said no problem.
I started work the following day and I saw the definition of stress. I was up all night. It was as if people don't sleep in this part of the world; they kept trooping in and out, especially those at the club. They come, eat, and go back to the club. At around 4 a.m., we had to clean up while waiting for those on morning duty to come and take over.
After the whole handing and taking over, I went back home with the mindset of going to class. I reached home at around 7 a.m. I decided to rest a little, only for me to wake up and find the time for lectures had passed. On the days I manage to meet up with lectures, all I do is sleep in class. Friends told me I'd get used to it, but I was skeptical because I know I can't trick nature.
Enough Rest: Each time I get the chance, I give myself enough rest. Every slight opportunity I get, I maximize it by resting.
I had to learn not to sleep at all if I had any classes in the morning, because once I do, I am surely going to miss that class.
Coffee: In order to stay awake in class and not sleep, I made coffee one of my everyday drinks. The caffeine content helps keep me awake.
Working and schooling can be very stressful especially year 1 when you're getting to get used to the University system
I cannot help but agree with you on this one.
Yeah
I pray things get easier so you just have to focus on school
Thanks for your prayers dear.
It is very much appreciated.
You're welcome
School in the day, work at night, I can see how this will be very stressful! Sleep is very important to us students because of the hours spent in lectures, but you ended up not getting enough sleep, it will surely affect your school life
It affects my school life for sure. My head aches all the time. It is not easy but we just have to keep struggling.
Wow, guy that was stressful..mehhnn!!!
How did you survive this, staying awake in the night daily can cause severe headache, health risk bro. Chaiii...it is well oo
Glad you found a way to manage it a bit but then, I would prefer day part time job if atall I must do it
Thanks for sharing 👍👏👏
The headache us what u don't want to talk about. Sometimes is as if someone pinched me on the head 🤣.
Chai
Hope you have stopped it now oo
We all know that working and studying is very stressful and hashed for everybody but, we really need to sacrifice and put our time in what will help us..
Putting our time into what will help us, us exactly what has kept us going.
The part that you said people keep trooping in and out,and you feel as if they don’t sleep makes me laugh out loud😂😂😂. I know how frustrated you will have been🥲.
No jokes 🤣, I almost asked them to stop coming at least let me rest.
😂😂
You can carry out both activities, namely work and school, maybe you have the determination and a strong desire to do both activities simultaneously. 😅👍
The determination and strong desire is actually what helped cope.
Hmmm! I can't imagine the stress you have to go through to stay awake in class. I don't know how effective coffee is in keeping people awake but I guess it has side effect when taken excess. You are a strong man. And I believe and pray that your sacrifice will never go in vain. Thanks for sharing this with us
Sometimes I get scared while taking the coffee but if I don't, then all I will do in class is sleep.
Working and school is quite a lot for a Nigerian student to go through but we have to do it regardless.
Learning to cope with the stress is just the only valid idea to cope with the stress that comes with working.
Thanks for sharing this wirht us dear friend.
What more can the son of an average man do than cope with the stress.
