I was a bit free this morning and I was on YouTube watching some videos. What actually drew me to the platform was finding out that the trailer to Reacher Season 3 was out, so I wanted to watch it. And as expected, it was a banger! However, it didn’t stop there for me. The algorithm just kept suggesting more and more movie trailers that will be coming out in this December and in the early months of 2025.

Besides Reacher, I also watched the trailer of Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning. Although that was more of a teaser than anything. Then, there was the new season of Wheel of Time that’s also coming up next year, The Gorge; a new movie that will air next year as well. However, my favorites are Sonic 3 which would be showing in cinemas this Christmas, and I’m just ecstatic. It shows that movie-wise, I’ve got the next couple of months covered.

I had a plan to visit the cinema this holiday period, even if it was once a week. I already made plans to go see Everybody Loves Jenifa at the cinemas. However, with the way things are choked up for me, I hope I get to make it before Sonic 3 comes out.

If there is one thing I love, it’s watching movies. This is something I’ve never hidden at all, even on this space. Before I returned to school for my HND, I used to visit the cinema almost every weekend. Back then, the only thing that would make me not go was if I was feeling down, I had other appointments, or there just wasn’t a good enough movie to get me to the cinema. That was how much I enjoyed it.

But then, one could argue that proximity also played a key role here. Because back in Lagos, the cinema isn’t far from my home at all. Now, with the current cost of transport, I can spend less than N300, to and fro, transporting myself. Which is quite fair. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for here in Owerri.

It’s not too far from my school, but the amount of checkpoints you’ll come across will just discourage you. The trip that on a good day should take less than fifteen minutes might end up lasting over an hour because of the excess checkpoints. Also, over the past few years, the cost of transportation has increased exponentially due to the rising cost of fuel.

Before, I could easily get to town with N300, now I’ll have to spend almost N1,000 just to get to town, and when you factor in the rising cost of movie tickets… by the time I do the maths, it’s just not worth it. So, I relax at home and wait until the movie hits the streaming sites. Since I returned to school, I’ve only been to the cinema less than five times. Those were for movies I couldn’t afford to miss. Movies like Fast X, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning*, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Guardians Of The Galaxy: Volume III.

These were movies I just had to watch with everyone else. Although for some of them, the number of people in the theater was ridiculously low, but that didn’t diminish the fun of it all. So, now that I’m planning a holiday, I’ll ignore all the previous reasons I had for not visiting the cinema and I will start doing it.

One movie each week. I hope this doesn’t break my bank, but then, it’s all in the spirit of the season. After all, if Christmas doesn’t finish our money for us, what then would finish it?
