Music is not merely for entertainment

I am not a person who is very much into Music. In fact, certain music and beats have highly negative impact on my moods and physiology. They induce anxiety-like feeling, palpitation, nausea and even shortness of breath.

One reason might be my general averseness to loud voices and noise that makes the mix and match of different beats on the name of music unbearable for my heart and head.

The other reason lies in the senselessness of the lyrics being played with the music. I don’t say all, but most of the songs these days have no depth or meaning in them. They are like putting jumbled thoughts and babbles together augmented by loud or danceable beats followed by repetition of meaningless sentences that by no definition can be called poetry. Such songs have high potential to become earworm and so they do this to me impairing my sleep and cognitive abilities.

Music is a source of entertainment, no doubt. However, its sole purpose is not entertainment. It is an art that is meant to demonstrate and preserve the richness of cultures, traditions and ideologies. It is the representation of the values, morals and mind-sets the society holds. It provides an insight into the expression of emotions and regards in particular cultures.

Music accompanied with inspiring and motivational lyrics has proved to be a source of uplifting the morals of nations during the times of wars and battles. It is evident through the history that Inspiring poetry and literature has the power to shape the perspectives and outlooks of its consumers.

Looking at the trends of present era we realize that the soul from the Art of Music is emptied. The highs and lows of beats with meaningless crap of words is not merely the deterioration of the art itself but a demonstration of disintegrating values and raising emotional upheaval in the society.

While there may be several factors contributing towards meaninglessness in the field of music, I think consumerism and social media trends have a lot to do with it.

We are in an era where success of an artist is measured by the number of followers and likes on their work. People are always after the idea that goes viral. They follow the trend mindlessly without giving a second thought to its impact. This mob and viral culture has made artist undermine the worth of their values. Instead of embracing their own uniqueness, they just keep on fly with the wind.

Moreover, the growth of social media and ease of access to audience has created an overwhelming competition among the artists. To remain on the screen of people they feel a constant pressure of newer productions. Thus they feel short of time needed for effortful lyrics and music creation.

While everyone is free to choose what they want to listen in the name of music, the meaninglessness and crap in the lyrics is a question on the values of the society. We, as audience, need to decide what we want to include in our lives.
