I am afraid of......!

Through out the course of life the man keeps on experiencing a variety of emotions. Fear is one of those emotions that we face quite often. It is the basic emotion the signs of which are even displayed by infants. To an extent, fear is essential for the safety of life and resources. It is the fear that make us to take precautionary measures and/or to respond with fight or flight. However, if the fear exceeds its optimal limit it is dangerous. Above its healthy limit it renders a person unable to take any action, instead it usurps a person’s ability to function properly in several realms of life. That’s why it is very important to keep one’s fear in check and be cautiously aware of its effects on our well being.

Like many other people of the world, I have faced several fears. Some of them came for the time being while others are more consistent. To combat some of them, I have practical strategies while for other I just fortify me with hopes and prayers. To name a few fears of mine I can say the fear of losing loved ones, fear of my kid’s sickness, fear of clearing an exam, fear of being judged, fear of getting old, fear of gaining weight, fear of being scammed, fear of losing hive keys 😏, fear of making a low quality post 😁 etc. The list is quite long and one blog post is not enough to talk about all of them. So, I have decided to talk about a fear that was induced in me because of my experience and also I am able to take some precautionary measures to avoid the loss.

It is the fear of being robbed at the market/crowded place. Some years ago I went to a market with my mother. I was having a big hand bag hung on my shoulder. There was a clutch in it in which I put the money. This was actually my mom who had to shop and make payments. I was only assisting her. After carrying out some shopping my mother asked me if I had a change. I put my hand into my hand bag to take my clutch out. But oooppsss! No clutch was in it. I remembered that I had closed the zip of my bag. The zip was opened and the clutch was lost. The shopkeeper noticed my unrest. He figured out what had happened and tod that pocket pickers wander in the market specifically on crowded days, so we should be very careful about our money.

After this incident I always have a fear of my money being robbed whenever I go to a market place. I take some precautionary measures to not encounter such an incident again.

🔹️ I tend to keep the clutch in my hand instead of keeping it in the bag.

🔹️ Sometimes , because of having shopping bags in the hand I fear I may not drop the clutch with money somewhere. To avoid such a situation I take a shoulder cross-over smaller bag (instead of bigger shoulder bags). I keep that bag at the front instead of setting it at a side. It lessens the chances of pocket picking to a greater extent. Also, I try to put my hand on the bag. Sticking a hand with the bag isn't a possibility but yes I keep on putting the hand on and off to assure that it is closed properly.

🔹️ Another thing that I do is to not keep all the money at one place. Instead, I divide the currency notes in different pockets of the bag. Some of the notes are in the clutch. I do so with the idea that if one pocket is picked or the clutch is taken out, the loss would be lesser.

By adopting the aforementioned strategies, I have been successful (so far) in not losing my money again. The fear makes me take steps to avoid the loss. However, I remain in fear through out the shopping time, as the incidents may happen despite our caution.

One's experience can be a good enough reason to fear...most people weren't born with some of the fear they carry today...one thing led to another that led to another that made that fear take over...

I've always been scared of taking my cell phone to a crowded place because of pick pockets..it's a rampant thing in markets too...like you, I learnt my lesson and started to become more careful..and use a trouser with zip pockets to safe guard them...
Thanks for the tips ❤️

It is foolishness to not learn the lessons from our experiences. You also started taking some safety measure shows your careful nature.

At my place also, there is a fear of losing mobile. That's why I avoid taking my phone with me

Twice, I was almost robbed in the market too, it can really instill fear the one's heart.

Keeping money in different places helps a whole lot. One of my friends who does this was robbed one day and they only took the money in his wallet, thank God he divided his money and kept it in different places, he would have been totally stranded that day.

Awesome post ma'am.

I think all of us have gone through such an incident at one point or another. The fear resides in us after facing them.

I am happy for your friend that he could save a portion of the money.

Thanks for stopping by 🙂

You must be a very careful person then
I like how you broke down your story and strategies to limit lost... I've come in contact with pocket pickers too, about 3 occasions, I lost my phone to the first one (it was so painful and terrible) I became wiser... The second and third one attempted but couldn't succeed

And guess what, over here there's jungle justice too... Criminals are burnt to death if the police did not show up on time especially in Market areas - but you'll still see these guys stealing and attempting to steal
Your post was amazing, thanks for sharing ✌️❤️

The loss of your mobile is a bigger loss than mere money. A lot of your important data is also lost that create hassles.

When the justice is not given by the law enforcers people take the law in their hands. I don't say it is the right way but the problem is that everyone is frustrated a d there is no way out for ventilation. May God give peace to our world

it not easy to walk in ghetto area, especially ghetto market. they can even take the person away. a bus conductor have dip his hand in my pocket why i was alighting in a bus. thank God i kept all my belonging includes phone, atm, and money in my bag and held like when a mother hold a new born baby. that was how i escaped pocket pickers in several occasions. therefor, you need to study your environment end extra careful

At my place busses are also not safe. You are right that one should be aware of the alarming signs of his surroundings so that one may escape the undesirable circumstances.

I also have the fear of being robbed especially when I'm not being too careful with how I'm handling my things. But then this phobia will always be there, we can only practice to reduce the probability of this happening to us at all time.

We can do precautionary measures to safeguard us. But then, if the loss is destined it would happen. We just gotta do whatever is possible at the moment.

I have been robbed in a crowded market place. Such a sad experience too. Infact, it's very hard to forget, it was supposed to be a Christmas shopping, I withdrew my salary, all..plus my two android phone...oh God, let me not narrate how all was disappeared because it was like I am dreaming. Well, I have learnt my lesson now but that fear still remain each time I visit the market

Hello @amberkashif, I love the way you introduced your post. You have made a very valid point, one which I totally agree with...

To an extent, fear is essential for the safety of life and resources. It is the fear that make us to take precautionary measures and/or to respond with fight or flight.

Fear is a great drive for a lot of people. The fear of being poor, failing etc has fueled the determination of a lot of people and this has made them work harder to achieve a lot of things which they so desire so just as you have said, fear is essential.

Pocket Picking is very common in a large market. Your experience has made you come up with very great safety tips against Pick Pockets. I have learnt a few which I didn't think of before. Thank you for sharing this.
