Upgrades For My Laptop

avatar

One thing that has bugged me for a while is the fact that my laptop was constantly running out of storage space. I have hard drives and stuff, but they didn't really help my situation.

Video editing requires a lot of storage space, which is kind of where the external hard drives would come in handy, but there is a noticeable difference between working on stuff saved to one of them, and having a project running with footage saved internally.

I have an M.2 drive in it which is about 500GB, it's fast as hell, but I wasn't able to do a hell of a lot with that amount of space.

On steam, I have a fairly large games library and I was unable to play any of them due to space constraints.

Here's my laptop opened up.

The first thing I was adding and upgrading was RAM, I had 8GB which was okay, but I ended up getting 16, in two sticks of 8, and then I gave my 8 to my mum who has the same laptop as me.

With them installed, I noticed a bit of a change, but honestly, not a whole lot of difference.

It's nice to know I have the extra though, even if I haven't noticed a major improvement.

Here's the second hard drive I got.

It's a 1TB SSD, coupled with the 500GB I already have, I figured it would be a welcome addition.

However, I discovered a problem when it came time to reboot the laptop and get it up and make sure everything was working.

After having it installed me and my mum were looking around and saw it wasn't showing up, after some messing around nothing changed and so I went to Google to see how to expand the drive, as I just wanted it all to be one, rather than having two.

Well, as it turns out, M.2s can only be expanded with other M.2s and vice versa. So, now I've basically got an internal external hard drive, but what's kind of cool is, I can download and play games from it, and I can work off footage saved to it.

It's handy for quick access without having to run off to find and plug in different hard drives I suppose.

But, now I have my eye on something else. Crucial have a sale on and I could get a new M.2 hard drive, 4TB for €273, rather than near €600.

One project I'm working on alone is about 2.4TB of footage, so the extra space will be used/ needed. I can still keep the SSD and use it primarily for games and bits and pieces like that, while the main drive could be used for work.

Video does eat disk space. I'm really behind on the latest technology. A few years back I started using SSD drives, but just used small ones for the OS and big conventional drives for data. I know things have moved on since then. I always used tower PCs rather than laptops as they are easy to upgrade.

I have a tower back home, but I haven't got room for the setup where I am now, so the laptop is the best thing for me at the moment.

If you're looking for an upgrade in the future the m.2s are amazing, it looks like a stick of ram and is so fast

Maybe I'll build/buy another PC some day, but mine is okay even though it's a few years old. I don't do much heavy processing.

Damn that's a hella big discount. Hopefully you're able to buy the 4TB. M.2 are expensive but they're so worth it. It's really annoying to constantly work with an external hard drive but good thing you managed to have it inside. :D

One thing I want to see is if it's compatible with my PC, in case I want to swap it over in the future. But, regardless if it is or not, it's a bargain

Oh right! Hmm I don't think laptop rams are compatible with PCs 🤔 But yeah haha
