Searching for bee brood in the hive 🐝 | Hives from Poland #6
In spring, when beekeepers check their hives, they look for the presence of eggs in the cells of the comb. The eggs are a sign that the queen bee is active and healthy because she is the one who lays them. The presence of eggs means that the bee colony is developing properly and has a good queen (who broods), which is crucial for the success of the hive. Therefore, regularly checking the presence of eggs is an important element of monitoring and taking care of the health of bees and ensuring the stability and efficiency of the hive, and this is done very often at the beginning of the season. I had the opportunity to participate in such work by accident, I came to visit my family and they needed a helper. As an accidental helper (amateur), I dressed very thickly: a shirt, gloves and, of course, a beekeeping hat. The apiary keeper, a very old beekeeper, was dressed in a thin shirt, without gloves, of course, and bees were crawling on his hands, but not a single one stung him. And looking at all this, wearing thick clothes, I admit that I had sweat on my forehead 🙂
Wiosną, gdy pszczelarze sprawdzają ule, poszukują obecności jaj w komórkach plastra. Jaja są znakiem, że królowa pszczół jest aktywna i zdrowa, ponieważ to ona składa je. Obecność jaj oznacza, że rodzina pszczół rozwija się prawidłowo i ma dobrą królową (która czerwi), co jest kluczowe dla sukcesu ula. Dlatego regularne sprawdzanie obecności jaj jest ważnym elementem monitorowania i dbania o zdrowie pszczół oraz zapewnienia stabilności i wydajności ula, to się robi bardzo często początkiem sezonu. W takich właśnie pracach miałem okazję uczestniczyć przypadkowo, przyjechałem do rodziny i był potrzebny pomocnik. Jako pomocnik (amator) z przypadku, ubrałem się bardzo grubo: koszula, rękawice i oczywiście kapelusz pszczelarski. Opiekun pasieki, bardzo stary pszczelarz, był ubrany w cienką koszulę, oczywiście bez rękawic, pszczoły chodziły mu po rękach, ale ani jedna go nie użądliła. A ja patrząc na to wszystko, będąc w grubym ubraniu, przyznaję, że miałem pot na czole :)
