Getting Seedlings Ready for the Garden! Green Pepper Germination
Success! Look at that Seedling go!
Let me start at the beginning.
Hello everyone. @zakludick here, I have not posted a gardening update in a quite a while! Previously I got a patch in the garden ready and built the frames of a fence to keep the kid's balls and such out of the area and contain the veggie garden I plan on growing.
Cape Town has wet and cold winters and due to various goings-on, I have have very little time to work in the garden, but the patch is getting soaked and weeded and I think the slow approach will pay off over time!
Here is that garden and fence again, some months ago.
So now, even during winter, it is time to prepare seedlings for the gardens. We use a lot of Green Peppers. Even though I bought a pack of seeds. I wanted to see the viability of harvesting seeds from green pepper bought from the store and try germinate them.
This actually becomes an ongoing process and I have a lot more seeds than I have space to germinate. This is OK since it seems the success rate is low.
Let's check it out.
Here we have some seeds. I have gathered even more by now.
I take a couple of mugs we buy German Mustard in and put paper towel around the outside and stuff the middle with toilet paper. Easy as that. Then sprinkle in some seeds and keep the paper moist. Not too wet. It only needs a few drops every other day.
I usually stick a finger onto the paper and if it is getting a bit stiff and dry, I drizzle in a little water.
These go onto the window shelf of the kitchen and every time I give it water, I rotate the cups around. The ears of the mug makes it easy to remember which way I am facing.
Some 2-3 weeks later and we are seeing some growth! Not all of the seeds germinate. It is nature's number game. Just sow and sow and sow. A number, the strong and healthy ones will survive!
What will happen with these little guys is that I will let them get a little stronger and then transplant them in little pots with potting soil and keep them in doors or in the garage near the window.
And that is it!
Thank you for stopping by and checking out my little bits of progress!
The dream is to be able to grow all sorts of things in my garden.
Another dream is to continue to germinate plants and to hand out seedlings to people to plant and tend in their gardens. I actually have no qualms sneakily planting these in public places and letting them provide food for those in need!
We shall see. First my own castle and then for others'.
Cheers!

Great work I need to germinate better have just been putting in my seed trays in the sun. Although getting ok results 🌱
That's great though. As long as you keep sowing, I am sure something will come up! Constant attantion though!
Yes, might take a leaf out of your book though 👌🏼
👍 You are welcome to!
I love how you germinate seeds, I think I am going to give it a try.
Good luck! Just remember to transplant them before the roots go into the paper, or else you must Plant the seedling with the paper!
Thank you for the information. Have a nice day ahead.
that looks like a nice plot you have there!
It's a bigger garden than I have ever had! I am very excited!
Yay! 🤗

Germinating seeds like that is a great idea! I carefully planted a ton of beans in deep seed trays and none of them germinated! So frustrating! This is a much better idea, you know exactly what you're getting. I like the handles tip, too. We don't have those kind of containers, but I will have a look in local charity shops and see if I can find something similar.
Yeah, I like to see that some of them are going and then I can focus on those plants. I have also planted plenty seeds that do not come up. Lol.
Any container will do, but see through and some way to mark their turning.
Ooh, I like your sprouting technique! I use paper towels to sprout my peppers and tomatoes too, but I like yours a lot! Thanks for sharing!

That's a pretty big deal. 👍😀
Oh, I never saw this method for growing seeds, but indeed its a good idea :-)
And this wooden thing in your garden, is it for you braai guests, when they arrive with their horses, looks like a western horse parking place? !LOL
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Its the start of a fence!
With the price of petrol, we might as well get horses! Though they would never be able to get into the garage...
Thanks @zakludick love this and your plans to plant them to help others. Imagine if everyone did that.
Great tips you've shared for us all.
Absolutely! We are going to make this world green!
Awesome. I have an urban garden too, and I am preparing a post about some salsa I made. Mmmmmmmmm.
Good luck with those plants!
Nice! I will check it out!
