What Should I Plant For Fall?
My Fall Garden Planting!
After a long hot and humid New England Summer, some cooler nights are starting to set in. August brings those warm days and long cool nights, and with it, a chance for new crops for my garden.
My average first frost is somewhere between Oct 15th and 20th or so. Some years, it will be earlier, and some, later. Given the warming trends of the past few decades, my guess is, my growing seasons sill be getting longer still. However, I would be foolish if I didn't recognize that nights are cooler than they were in June, July, and early August. So, Time to PLAN for Fall Plants.
I want to take advantage of the days where I can finally grow my greens without them bolting in a week! I want to grow some plants that hate the intense hot heat of the dog days of August.
Peas, Beets, Carrot, Radish, and some of my favorites: Lettuce, Spinach, Kale, and my micro greens for fresh salads. Sure, I grow many fresh salad greens all winter long, indoors, but, there's nothing like walking outside, picking some fresh greens for a meal, right now.

I would do the beets, salad, and kale as you have enough time to get a decent harvest. I did the same last week. 🤭
I also do the peas, whether I get a harvest or not, I like that they add nitrogen back into the soil. AND, I'll toss whatever grows back into the compost bin
I'm working on getting some spinach in. Maybe some radish. Not too ambitious. Dealing with the avalanche of tomatoes, cucumber, zuch...
yeah, tons of tomato. My cukes were oddly disappointing this year
