Stargate: TimeKeepers (NERD-OUT!)
Oh my gosh! I just read about the in-the-pipeline game from Slitherine... Stargate: Timekeepers. I've been such a huge nerd out fan of the Stargate universe... from the movies to the TV shows, I LOVED LOVED LOVED it soooo much. I sort of kinda really liked it!
I don't know what it was that really attracted me to it... maybe it was MacGyver, but I think it had more to do with the idea that Earth was an overlooked bastion of resistance against overbearing and almighty overlords, and the intrigues of star empires and factions with humans being one little pawn in all of that machinations... tied in with the ancient myths and legends, given meaning with the alien overlords. Oh wow, there was nothing that I didn't love about the universe and story world!
Honestly, I don't think I had more affinity for any other story universe... although, I was definitely a sucker for Buffy and Firefly... oh, and of course, RuneTerra! I just loved these fantastic worlds of imagination when I was growing up, and I'm still growing up... and so, I still love losing myself in the lore and mythos of these imaginary worlds!
So, a game that promises to set a nerdy gamer into that world? Yes Please!
Oh oh oh... that music, the thuds of the stargate chevrons locking into place! So much joy!!!!
... but there isn't too much information in that official reveal trailer. The publisher, Slitherine is renowned for their hardcore strategy and tactics games, so that is quite promising... and the developers have other cool franchises under their belt, like Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock. So, I'm quite hopeful that the game will be a decent one...
... but the question is, will it scratch that Stargate itch? The description makes mention of the "defeating of the Goa'uld". Part of the joy of the Stargate universe was that there was no ultimate victory... but a game demands an end. I'm the sort of gamer that can happily sit in an equilibrium, but that is an dangerous path for a game development arc. Players get bored, and not everyone likes an open-ended game without a victory condition.
So, I suspect that I might be disappointed in this regard...
Some initial gameplay reveals that the mechanics on the tactical level seem to play out in a manner similar to Desperados. Not my favourite... I would have preferred a turn-based sort of affair more like XCOM or Jagged Alliance. However, there is talk of base building and research... so, that part of XCOM might be included.
The sound and music seem to be pretty good... I love the crunchiness of the snow.
I'm cautiously excited about this release... I really want it to be a success and to be everything that I would want in a Stargate game. But with the real-time Desperados mechanic, I'm not sure that this will be the game that I want. However, given that I'm such a sucker for the story world... I might end up aping into this at or near launch. If only to see what story unfolds out of it...
And perhaps MacGyver will cameo in it?... oh man, I think I would just die with extreme nerd out if there was Full Motion Video cutscenes!
Well, with a 2022 launch window, I guess I won't have too long to wait before I get my chance to drop cash on this! Now, can someone please please please make a Firefly (or Buffy) game? Please? Pretty please?

Oh my. Every time I'm hopeful for a stargate game I end up being let down.
I know... but THIS TIME will be different, right?
I loved this series, too. It was one of the few Blu-Ray boxes I bought! Even though I could simply watch it all online, if I wanted to! 😎
Oh, I think I'm going to hunt around... I binged Buffy a little while back, Stargate should definitely be worth watching all the way through!
Believe me or not, now I am watching Stargate Atlantis s04 - Finished SG1 for the fifth or sixth time in the past couple of years, always followed by atlantis and SG universe (too bad there are only two seasons).
I always wanted SGU to continue its story. Always been a nerd fan of all stargate and always wanted an FPS game stargate with missions and to be interactive with puzzles and discovering secrets and new technologies!
But they left the fans out in the wood…
It’s so sad.
When I’ve seen your title, my heart started racing, but I wanted a bit more from this game. :(
Anyway, gonna finish SGA s04 and 05, Art of Truth and Continuum then SGU both seasons.
Imagine an Stargate online FPS where you do missions as SG-1 with your teammates! JUST WOW!
But it will never happen!
Thanks for sharing your post
It’s amazing to see that I’m not the only Stargate nerd here hehe!
I never watched Atlantis, I will have to see all the other spinoffs and continuations of the storyline.
I think I would also want more from the game, it isn't quite what I was after... but I would prefer something more along the lines of XCOM or something like that. I'm not really a fan of multiplayer!
