Prompt A Day | Gucci and Billy

It's Tuesday, the 28th day of Prompt A Day challenge by @shadowspub. Three days left of January.

Seriously, it's just the start of the year, and yet a lot has already happened. Most of which are not good events. I certainly wouldn't like to think that that's a bird's eyeview of what 2020 will be like. If we were talking about quota, we certainly have already hit the mark. I pray that the rest of the year will be more favorable and more peaceful.

Today's journal/blogging prompt is truly interesting. We are asked to write about a childhood pet. It's not every day that I walk down memory lane. Before I proceed, I might as well state that this is a sad story. It's best not to proceed if you don't want to feel sad. No, there's no death or anything gruesome, but there's no happy ending either.

We grew up not having pets, as my old man didn't like them. We did get a chance to have some when I was in my teens. It was the age prior to digital cameras and social media. So if I were to find a photo or two, I would have to dig through Mom's pile of albums. <shudders at the thought> Thankfully, I'll just borrow from Pixabay.

Billy

Billy Boy, as I fondly called him. We got him as a puppy from one of the offsprings of my aunt's dogs. He's a regular breed, a mongrel I believe. He was so tiny as a pup, but later on grew to be a big doggy. He initially lived inside the house, but we needed to transfer him to a wooden cage outside, as he was getting bigger. It's a house-like shelter, so he wouldn't get wet when it's raining. I used to walk him around the neighborhood at night.

We had him for a good number of years, but we had to give him away, as we were moving to an apartment building. We couldn't have any pets there. I truly loved that dog. He was my good friend too. I don't know what happened to him anymore. He'll always be alive in my memory.

Gucci

She was named Goldie and was given to my mom by one of her students. She's a poodle terrier, really tiny breed and so cute too. We later on changed her name to Gucci, as I thought it sounded better.

She came to us at a time when Billy was already big. They were unlikely friends, imagine a big doggy and a tiny one. Gucci stayed indoors, as she's tiny. She's Mom's alarm clock. She would wake them up every morning, as she would need to go down. She's potty trained too. Gucci's like a little kid. There was one time when Mom was home late. Gucci ended up chewing off one of her sandals. I suppose she got mad at Mom for not coming home on time. Other than that, she's a really nice doggie.

Billy was protective of Gucci. He would bark loudly when Gucci would be running off. That's exactly what happened one day. I think I was in school, and Mom didn't see right away that Gucci had run off. She got out of our gate. We used to live in a compound, rows of houses within a common gate. Apparently, a woman and a child saw Gucci and called her. She's a friendly dog. That was the last time Mom saw her. We tried to investigate what happened, but no one knew who the woman was. Mom was heartbroken then. She never wanted to have another pet after Gucci. We never found out what happened to Gucci, but I'd like to think she found a good home anyway.

Enough sob story for a day. I hope my story didn't make you cry. It was honestly a bit difficult to write down. In a way, it still hurts to remember. But, life goes on......

I'm grateful for the here and now. We have guinea pigs that we truly love and care for. Plus, we have been adopted by our neighborhood cats. Life is good.
